An unusual feature of the saline stratified lakes that were formed due to ongoing postglacial uplift on the White Sea coast is the presence of several differently colored thin layers in the zone with sharp gradients. Colored layers in five lakes at various stages of separation from the sea were investigated using optical microscopy, spectrophotometry, spectrofluorimetry, and photobiology. The upper greenish colored layer located in the aerobic strata of all lakes near the compensation depth of 1% light penetration contains green algae. In the chemocline, another layer, brightly green, red or pink, is dominated by mixotrophic flagellates. Despite the very low light intensities and the presence of H 2 S, active photosynthesis by these algae appears to be occurring, as indicated by high values of the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry, electron transport activity, photosynthetic activity of photosystem II, the fraction of active centers, and low values of heat dissipation. In the reduced zone of the chemocline, a dense green or brown suspension of anoxygenic phototrophs(green sulfur bacteria) is located.

During life human eye is constantly exposed to sunlight and artificial light, the sources of reactive oxygen species (ROS)—the main cause of age-related eye pathology. A novel mitochondria-targeted antioxidant SkQ1 has recently been invented to reduce mitochondrial ROS by cleaning the mitochondria matrix, “the dirtiest place in the cell” in respect of ROS production and accumulation. Earlier we studied SkQ1 effects upon retinal pigment epithelium and choroid in the rat eye posterior cups exposed to long-term 3D organotypic culturing. It was found that under in vitro conditions 20 nM SkQ1 effectively reduced cell death in retinal pigment epithelium and choroid and protected the tissues from disintegration and cell withdrawal. In the present study we used same ex vivo conditions to examine the effect of SkQ1 upon the rat neural retina kept in the content of the posterior eye cup. Eye cups were isolated and cultured in vitro during 7, 14, and 30 days under rotation in the presence and absence of 20 nM SkQ1 in the culture medium. Serial sections of cultivated eye cups were subjected to histology, computer morphometry and immunohistochemistry. Obtained results show that SkQ1 operates as a strong protective agent, preventing neuronal cell death and other degenerative processes in the neural retina. Cell rescue by SkQ1 was more vivid in the central part of the retina than at the periphery. That, in turn, suggests SkQ1 effectiveness in treatment of some age-related eye diseases when central part of the retina, including macula, is most susceptible to degeneration.

Characterization of functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes and application as an effective filter for heavy metal removal from aqueous solutions

Filtration efficiency of ni(II) from aqueous solution using pristine and modified MWCnTs filters was investigated as a function of ni(II) ion concentration, p H, and filter mass. MWCnTs were synthesized by CVD method and modified using two complementary treatments, purification(using a mixture of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide) and functionalization(using nitric acid). The effect and mechanism of each treatment on the structural integrity of pristine MWCnTs has been studied. Morphology of the pristine and modified filters was investigated by Raman Spectrometry(RS), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy(EDS),Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR) spectrometry and Thermogravimetric analysis. It was found from Raman spectra that the ratio of the intensity of D-band to that of G-band decreased by purification process, and increased by functionalization process. The adsorption mechanism of ni(II) onto the surface functional groups of modified MWCnTs was confirmed by FTIR spectrum. The filtration results showed that the removal efficiency of ni(II) is strongly dependent on pH and could reach 85% at pH = 8. Also, modified MWCnT filters can be reused through many cycles of regeneration with high performance. Functionalized MWCnTs filters may be a promising adsorbent candidate for heavy metal removal from wastewater.

Analysis of various mass formulas related to neutron-proton correlations in atomic nuclei is carried *** the example of the n =Z chain it is shown that for self-adjoint nuclei various formulas proposed in literature for estimating the np pairing energy lead to similar results. Significant differences between the calculation methods arise when nuclei with n = Z are considered, which allows to reveal the complexity of neutron-proton correlations in different types of atomic nuclei and to make assumptions on the correspondence of the mass relation to the real effect of np pairing. The Shell Model parametrization of the binding energy makes it possible to draw additional conclusions on the structure of mass formulas and their relationship.

To explore pharmaceutical actinobacteria from salty environments in Siberia,8 soil samples were collected from different depths of Gudzhirganskoe saline lake,the Republic of Buryatia,***,635 actinobacterial strains affiliated with 21 genera in 12 families of 7 orders were obtained by culture-dependent *** predominant genus was Streptomyces(74.5%),followed by Microbacterium(4.9%),Agromyces(3.5%),nocardiopsis(3.0%),and Kitasatospora(2.5%).Seven strains showed relatively low 16 S rRnA similarities(n strains were selected as representatives to evaluate their antimicrobial activities and underlying mechanisms by paper-disk diffusion method and a double fluorescent protein reporter system(pDualrep 2),*** sp.S 6 b 3-1 was highlighted due to its strong inhibitory activities against Gram-positive bacteria and underlying antibacterial mechanism by inducing the SOS response in the reporter ***-1,(R)-6-[1-(benzoyloxy)ethyl]-phenazine-1-carboxylic acid,an analogue of saphenamycin was finally isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces *** study preliminarily explored the actinobacterial diversity of soil samples collected in the highly alkaline and saline lake Gudzhirganskoe by culture-dependent approach and their capacity to produce antibiotics for the first time,which revealed that it deserves to make more efforts to discover new actinobacterial species and potential new antibiotics from the saline lake in Eastern Siberia.

The hydrothermal synthesis of In_(2)O_(3)and CeO_(2)–In_(2)O_(3)is investigated as well as the properties of sensor layers based on these *** the synthesis of In_(2)O_(3),intermediate products In(OH)_(3)and InOOH are formed,which are the precursors of stable cubic(c-In_(2)O_(3))and metastable rhombohedral(rh-In_(2)O_(3))phases,respectively.A transition from c-In_(2)O_(3)to rh-In_(2)O_(3)is observed with the addition of CeO_(2).The introduction of cerium into rh-In_(2)O_(3)results in a decrease in the sensor response to hydrogen,while it increases in composites based on c-In_(2)O_(3).The data on the sensor activity of the composites correlate with XPS results in which CeO_(2)causes a decrease in the concentrations of chemisorbed oxygen and oxygen vacancies in rh-In_(2)O_(3).The reverse situation is observed in composites based on c-In_(2)O_(3).Compared to In_(2)O_(3)and CeO_(2)–In_(2)O_(3)obtained by other methods,the synthesized composites demonstrate maximum response to H_(2)at low temperatures by 70–100℃,and have short response time(0.2–0.5 s),short recovery time(6–7 s),and long-term stability.A model is proposed for the dependence of sensitivity on the direction of electron transfer between In_(2)O_(3)and CeO_(2).

Red blood cells(RBCs)are able to interact and communicate with endothelial cells(ECs).Under some pathological or even normal conditions,the adhesion of RBCs to the endothelium can be ***,the mechanisms and many aspects of the interaction between RBCs and ECs are not fully *** this work,we considered the interaction of single RBCs with single ECs in vitro aiming to quantitatively determine the force of this interaction using laser *** were performed under different concentrations of proaggregant macromolecules and in the presence or absence of tumor necrosis factor(TnF-α)activating the *** have shown that the strength of interaction depends on the concentration of fibrinogen or dextran proaggregant macromolecules in the environment.A nonlinear increase in the force of cells interaction(from 0.4 pn to 21 pn)was observed along with an increase in the fibrinogen con-centration(from 3 mg/mL to 9 mg/mL)in blood plasma,as well as with the addition of dextran macromolecules(from 10 mg/mL to 60 mg/mL).Dextran with a higher molecular mass(500 kDa)enhances the adhesion of RBCs to ECs greater compared to the dextran with a lower molecular mass(70 kDa).With the preliminary activation of ECs with TnF-α,the force of interaction ***,the adhesion of echinocytes to EC compared to discocytes is significantly *** results may help to better understand the process of interaction between RBCs and ECs.
