Causal Association Between tea consumption and Gout:A Mendelian Randomization Study

Objective Evidence from prospective studies on the consumption of tea and risk of gout is conflicting and *** aimed to investigate the potential causal effects of tea intake on gout using Mendelian randomization(MR).Methods Genome-wide association studies in UK Biobank included 349376 individuals and successfully discovered single-nucleotide polymorphisms linked to consumption of one cup of tea per *** statistics from the Chronic Kidney Disease Genetics consortium included 13179 cases and 750634 controls for ***-sample MR analyses were used to evaluate the relationship between tea consumption and gout *** inverse-variance weighted(IVW)method was used for primary analysis,and sensitivity analyses were also conducted to validate the potential causal *** In this study,the genetically predicted increase in tea consumption per cup was associated with a lower risk of gout in the IVW method(OR:0.90;95%CI:0.82–0.98).Similar results were found in weighted median methods(OR:0.88;95%CI:0.78–1.00),while no significant associations were found in MR-Egger(OR:0.89;95%CI:0.71–1.11),weighted mode(OR:0.80;95%CI:0.65–0.99),and simple mode(OR:1.01;95%CI:0.75–1.36).In addition,no evidence of pleiotropy was detected by MR-Egger regression(P=0.95)or MR-PRESSO analysis(P=0.07).Conclusion This study provides evidence for the daily consumption of an extra cup of tea to reduce the risk of gout.

To investigate whether alcohol and tea con-sumption has an etiological association with nasophar-yngeal carcinoma(NPC)in a high-incident population,a large scale case-control study was *** study included 2846 individuals in Guangdong Province,China,with 1387 newly diagnosed cases of NPC and 1459 frequency-matched *** histories of alcohol and tea consumption were obtained via personal *** regarding socio-demographic charac-teristics(age,sex,education,dialect and household type),family history of NPC,Epstein-Barr virus(EBV)infection,dietary habits and other potential confounding factors was also *** analysis was performed using uncondi-tional logistic regression to calculate odds ratios(OR)and 95%conﬁdence intervals(CI).The risk of NPC was found to be associated with habitual alcohol consumption and tea *** consumption has been associated with a decreased occurrence of NPC(OR=0.62),while con-sumption of alcohol was associated with a complex ***ﬁcally,moderate consumption of alcohol was associated with decreased risk of NPC,while overuse,especially strong distillate spirits,appeared to be a risk factor.

Mr. Taeryum, an envoy of Shilla Dynasty brought tea seeds from China during Tang Dynastyand the seeds were planted at Jiri Mt. by the order of King Heungduk at AD 828. During Koryo Dynasty (918-1392), Buddhism spread rapidly all over the country and the tea culture reached its highest stage of prosperity. At the Chosun Dynasty. However, the ceremonial drinking of tea vanished almost completely due to the flourishing Confucian tradition, a kind of substitution of Buddhism. But a few people have supported the traditional tea culture by themselves. Since the independence of Korea soon after the World War II(1945), the cultivation area of tea plants has been increased and the cultural tradition of tea drinking has become popular *** present, the cultivation area has been continued to increase and tea production has also been lifted up year byyear. In spite of continuous increased tea cultivation area, there still is a severe problem of shortage of tea in thecountry. tea farmers and the Korean government should take several actions to solve to remedy the *** this paper the prospect for shortage of tea demand is discussed after 2003 when the high special customs du-ties for tea products is lowered from 536% to 30 or 40% in Korea and the trade situation of tea products oncountries around Korea are also discussed.
