This paper gives an overview of the presentations and discussions at the Sino British Workshop on Urban Environmental Enhancement and sustainable development.held in Beijing from September 9—11, 1998. It summarises the contributions from both the Chinese and British sides to the four major themes of urban sustainability: integrated environmental assessment, water pollution and management, urban transportation and its impacts on air quality, and environmental technology. It also identifies many areas of common interest for further collaboration.

The purpose of this study was to investigate student＇s awareness, knowledge and understanding of environmental issues for sustainable development. Findings revealed that： despite the positive attitude shown by students towards environmental education, a relatively low level of understanding of environmental concept was recorded in school settings regardless of efforts by government and other environmental agencies at creating awareness about environmental related issues. This brought about the investigation of students＇ environmental education knowledge in high school settings. About 205 students were randomly selected for data collection using validated instruments titled student＇s knowledge and attitude questionnaire as well as student＇s response to questions （interview） concerning global warming. T-test statistics, chi-square and simple percentage were the major statistical tools employed in data analysis. This study revealed that environment based-education （school curriculum） as well as efforts by government/environmental agencies （mass media） plays a major role in promoting students＇ understanding, of environmental concepts, awareness of major environmental issues and positive attitude towards natural environment.

Each year, ethanol production is increasing in Brazil, consequently, the generation of byproducts as well. Among these, the vinasse stands out. With polluting power a hundred times greater than domestic sewage and high concentration of minerals, vinasse is generated in large volumes. Because of these characteristics, it is widely used in fertirrigation. However, it is composed of about 97% water, inflating the cost of the transport from the plant to the field. For these reasons, removing water from the vinasse and the consequent concentration of solids is an alternative management and application of this by-product. This project aimed to analyze the efficiency of various physical and chemical processes in the removal of water from the vinasse.

The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO has called for a strategic commitment from its States Parties to strengthen links between heritage conservation and sustainable development. Fulfilment of this commitment will require integration of the conservation of sites with the sustainable use and management of natural resources in a larger area beyond the boundaries of sites. Identification and demarcation of areas for conserving World Heritage sites and sustainable development.of broader regions must derive from an in-depth knowledge of people-environment relationships. The management of Angkor-an iconic World Heritage site -has been primarily focused on conservation and restoration of monuments within the boundaries of the site. However, that focus is now shifting towards addressing environmental, social and economic challenges for sustainable development.of the broader landscape described in this paper as the Angkor ecosystem. Angkor has the potential to demonstrate the application of an ecosystem approach to sustainable development.-advocated under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. The site could be a laboratory for new research on cultural ecosystem services as a tool for bridging site conservation to the sustainable development.of the Siem Reap province where the site is located.

At the cost of overdrawing from the environment, spatial distribution of industries takes promoting the economic growth as goal and makes the overload of industries coexist with the unreasonable arrangement in some areas, which is unable to satisfy the demand of sustainable development. To change the present development.model, the spatial distribution of industries must coordinate with the environmental bearing capacity. The present practice we take to change resources distribution to meet the existing arrangement of industries will bring incredible calamitous consequence to the development.in the future. To make industry’s arrangement coordinate with ecological environment, and to adopt the method similar to “arranging along the rivers” should become the guidelines of spatial distribution of industries.

Two Kinds of Nontraditional Mining Technology

The nontraditional mining industry is an important part of nontraditional mineral resources projects. It is a new mining industry focusing on the application of new science and technology, producing high value added outputs, offering comprehensive services, protecting the environment and saving energy sources. This paper discusses main principles of two kinds of nontraditional miming technology: the drilling hydraulic fracturing and drilling hydraulic mining applied to the coalbed methane production. Furthermore, this paper introduces the characteristics and application of these two kinds of technology.

The first area in China to which the McHargian approach to landscape planning was applied was the Hangzhou Bay area on the central coast. Using published maps and documents and analyzing remote sensing data, an ecological inventory (GIS) was first developed. Based on these data, several criteria for land and water use suitability evaluation were produced. These were then overlayed to evaluate the entire region for several categories of land and water uses, and a suitability synthesis map was produced. This map became the basis for developing several possible concepts and plans for the sustainable development.of the region. It is a timely and much needed approach in a rapidly developing country like China if development.is to fulfill both present needs and allow future generations to fulfill theirs too.

Rapid industrialization in Vietnam has resulted in the difficult task of finding means to properly manage the generation of industrial waste. In an attempt to deal with this problem, the Vietnamese government revised the Law on Environmental Protection of 2005, with which it imposed strict regulations on industrial waste generators and the waste they discharge. However, questions remain about the current industrial solid waste management system because of the discrepancy between the ideals embodied in the Law and the actual practices occurring in industry. We report here on the effectiveness of governmental policies, focusing on environmental performance in industrial zones in Ho Chi Minh City （HCMC）, Vietnam. We examined government records, and reports from waste generators, as well as waste treatment methods at sites. In addition, on-site surveys were carried out at 44 companies in HCMC in 2009 and 2010 to obtain a better understanding of the companies＇ handling of and attitude toward the industrial waste they produced. Our results show that the incoherence of the revised Law and regulations in industrial waste management has caused a serious pressure on domestic landfills. We conclude that there is a strong need for change in the current regulatory and management system in order to increase the effectiveness of environmental management for future sustainable development.
