Objective: To assess the seroprevalence and associated risk factors of toxoplasmosis among HIV patients in Agaro Town Health Center of Jimma zone. Methods: Convenient sampling was used to collect blood samples from 135 patients attending anti retroviral therapy from February to March 2015. Serum samples were tested for anti-Toxoplasma gondii(T. gondii) antibody by using latex agglutination test. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographic and risk factors associated with toxoplasmosis. Results: Overall seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis was 80.7%(109/135, CI: 74.04-87.36). In multivariate analysis significant association was observed between anti T. gondii seropositivity and raw meat consumption(OR: 3.514, CI: 1.167 10.581, P=0.025), knowledge about toxoplasmosis(OR: 5.225, CI: 1.382, P=0.015) and sex(OR: 4.023, CI: 1.382-19.762, P=0.015). Conclusions: Immuno compromised patients showed high rate of seropositivity and thus, it is highly advisable to introduce routine anti-T. gondii antibodies serological screening test prior to ART commencement.

Objective:To investigate the possible association between Toxoplasma gondii(***)infection and breast cancer by examining the seropositivity and serointensity rate of anti-T gondii antibodies in breast cancer patients and healthy ***:This study was carried out on 66 women with breast cancer which consists of 29 newly diagnosed patients(Group 1) and 37 cases undergoing treatment and regular checkups(Group 2).Also,60 healthy women(Group 3) with no history of cancer confirmed by clinical examination and imaging participated in this *** participants were tested for *** immunoglobulin G(IgG) and immunoglobulin M(IgM) antibodies by enzyme-linked ***:The mean age of Groups 1.2 and 3 were 43.3±6.8,41.8±5.5 and 42.3±***(P=0.72).Overall.104(82.5%) and 8(6.3%) out of 126 women were positive for anti-T gondii IgG and IgM antibodies,*** seropositivity rate of *** antibodies(IgG) was seen in breast cancer patients(86.4%) compared with control group(78.3%)(P=0.24).IgG antibodies were detected in 89.2%of cancer patients under treatment.82.7%of newly diagnosed patients(P=0.18).IgM antibodies were found in 3(10.3%),2(5.4%)and 3(5%) in Groups 1.2 and *** significant difference was found between the mean titers of *** IgG antibody among these groups(P=0.87).Conclusions:This study did not find any significant association between toxoplasmosis and breast cancer besides higher rates of seropositivity and serointensity in patients compared with healthy volunteers.

Objective:To identify more effective and less toxic drugs to treat animal ***:Efficucy of seven kinds of sulfonamides against Toxoplasma gondii(***)in an acute murine model was *** mice used throughout the study were randomly assigned to many groups(10 mice each),which either remained uninfected or were infected intraperitoneally with lachyzoites of ***(strains RH and CN).All groups were then treated with different sulfonamides and the optimal treatment protocol was determined ***-sodium(SD)was used for ***:The oplimal therapy involved gavaging mice twice per day with 250 mg/kg bw of sulfachloropyrazine-sodium(SPZ)for five *** this protocol,the average survival time and the time-point of 50%fatalities were prolonged significantly compared with SD *** with SFZ protected 40%of mice from death,and the heart and kidney tissue of these animals was parasite-free,as determined by *** showed excellent therapeutic effects in the treatment of *** in an acute murine model and is therefore a promising drug candidate for the treatment and prevention of *** in ***:It can be concluded that the effective drug sulfachloropyrazine may be the new therapeutic options against animal toxoplasmosis.

AIM: To establish seroprevalence and provide characteristics of Toxoplasma gondii(TG) infection in children with recurrent headaches. METHODS: The study was performed in 178 children aged 7-17 years admitted consecutively to the Department of Pediatric Neurology from November 2009 to July 2011. The children were surveyed with a questionnaire with the help and assistance of their parents and blood samples taken on admission were studied for the presence of specific anti-TG Ig M, Ig G antibodies and Ig G avidity using enzyme immunoassay Platelia Toxo Ig M, Ig G. RESULTS: The study showed that 19 children(8 boys, 11 girls; 8-17 years old, mean age 14.36 years) hadhigh serum anti-TG Ig G antibody levels(range: 32.2 > 240 UI/m L, mean 120.18 UI/m L; positive value for Ig G was ≥ 9 UI/m L). The avidity index(AI) ranged from 0.202 to 0.925(scale: ≥ 0.5 high AI). The results for Ig M antibodies were all negative and the obtained results ranged from 0.113 to 0.25 U/m L(mean = 0.191 IU/m L) and all values below 0.8 IU/m L were considered negative. The most frequent complaints found in the seropositive patients were headaches that affected the frontal(13 children), occipital(4) and parietal areas(5). Headaches usually had a pulsating(in 7 patients) and squeezing(6) character and rarely were piercing, dull or expanding. Interestingly, 8 children did not feel discomfort during the headaches, probably because they did not have sufficiently increased intracranial pressure yet. The headaches usually appeared 1-2 times/mo, lasted for 2-6 h, and had a mean intensity of 5.5 points in a 10 point subjective scale. The comorbidities included epilepsy(5 patients), various infections in 3 children(chronic eustachitis, chronic rhinitis, chronic purulent tonsillitis, streptococcal pharyngitis, meningitis, allergic diseases), disturbances of behavior, deficits of attention, and ocular and motor concentration disorders in 1 child. Detection of acute and chronic toxoplasmosis amongst multi-transfused thalassemia patients in southwest of Iran

Objective: Since pre-transfusion screening for Toxoplasma gondii is not performed on blood packs, thalassemia patients are susceptible to acquiring toxoplasmosis;thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the seroprevalence status of T. gondii in individuals who suffer from thalassemia in comparison to healthy persons in the southwest of Iran. Methods: In this case-control study, 117 thalassemia patients and 205 healthy persons participated. All samples were tested for the presence of specific IgG and IgM antibodies against T. gondii using ELISA technique. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test. Results: Seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii IgG was detected in 30.76% (36/117) of patients and 20% (41/205) of healthy individuals (P=0.04), also anti-T. gondii IgM in these groups was detected 1.70% (2/117) and 0.48% (1/205), respectively (P=0.3). In present study, nine related risk factors with toxoplasmosis were evaluated and data analysis showed that only contact with cat was significantly correlated with IgG seroprevalence (P=0.02). Conclusions: Current research suggests thalassemia patients are more prone than normal persons to acquiring T. gondii infection (P=0.04, OR:1.77). Due to limited studies in this high risk group, further studies are recommended.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of toxoplasmosis and to assess the possible risk factors associated with the infection among pregnant women attending antenatal care center at Felege Hiwot Referral Hospital, Bahir Dar town, northwest Ethiopia. Methods: A hospital based cross-sectional study was designed to determine the prevalence of toxoplasmosis among pregnant women. Three hundred eighty four serum samples were collected from November 2013 to January 2014. Data on socio-demographic and predisposing factors were collected from each study participant with simple random sampling technique. The serum samples were examined for anti- Toxoplasma gondii(T. gondii) antibodies using latex agglutination test. Results: The overall seroprevalence of T. gondii among the pregnant women was 18.5%. All of T. gondii positive cases found to be positive only for Ig G antibody. Significant association was observed between seroprevalence and presence of domestic cats [AOR=2.85, 95% CI: 1.66-4.90, P=0.000], consumption of raw or undercooked meat [AOR=1.98, 95% CI: 1.15-2.43, P=0.014] and history of abortion [AOR=2.47, 95% CI: 1.40-4.34, P=0.002]. No significant association was observed between seroprevalence and socio-demographic characters, gestational age, gravidity, consumption of raw vegetable, and blood transfusion. Conclusions: The seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis among pregnant women in Bahir Dar town was relatively high. Presence of domestic cats at home and consumption of raw or undercooked meat were identified as main risk factors for T. gondii infection. Therefore, health education towards avoiding eating raw or undercooked meat and avoiding contact with cats are recommended for prevention of miscarriage or defects during pregnancy.
