Amphiphilic molecules have long been regarded as an important class of supramolecular building blocks for the fabrication of nanomaterials. While most previous researches have mainly focused on amphiphlies with flexible structures, in this work, four novel amphiphiles possessing wholly-rigid skeletons have been designed and synthe- sized. These molecules were built by using 4,4＇-bipyridin-l-ium or viologen as hydrophilic moieties and phenyl or biphenyl as hydrophobic segments, bridged by a pyridazine unit. Their self-assembly behavior has been investigated by scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, atomic force microscopy （AFM） and transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, which revealed they could self-assemble into well-ordered nanoarchitectures with various morphologies such as vesicles, micro/nanorods and nanotubes in water or methanol, depending on their hydrophilic/hydrophobic fraction ratios.

This work reports a SO2 derivative-detecting and colorful hyperbranched polymeric ionic liquid （HBPIL） vesicle through aqueous self-assembly. By a simple anion-exchange, we achieved the combination of functional small-molecule probe of acid fuchsin with HBPILs. The obtained HBPIL vesicle displayed ultraviolet absorption at 544 nm, and was used as a novel SO2 derivative sensor with high sensitivity and visualization. Due to the functional ion pairs enriching on the surface, the SO32 detection limit of the HBPILs vesicles was as low as 0.138 gmol/L, which was about 1.5 orders of magnitude lower than that of acid fuchsin.

In this paper, the kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of the self-assembly quantum rings （QRs） based on the substrate engineering, which is related to the eventual shape of the formed quantum ring, are implemented. According to the simulation results, the availability of the QR with tunable size and the formation of smooth shape on the ideal flat substrate are checked. Through designing the substrate engineering, i.e., changing the depth, the separation and the ratio between the radius and the height of the embedded inclusions, the position and size of QR can be controlled and eventually the growth strategy of optimizing the self-assembly QRs is accomplished.

The self-assembly of the linear rod-coil multiblock copolymers is studied by applying self-consistent-field lattice techniques in a three-dimensional （3D） space. Compared to the copolymer with one rod, the copolymer with more rods （mrod≥ 2） exhibits rich order-order phase transitions with increasing temperature, where the ordered morphology changes from strips to perforated lamellae and finally to lamellae. In addition, taking the copolymer with mrod = 2 as a representative, we fiarther study the effects of the volume fractions of the rods, the spacer coils and the end coils on the phase behaviors respectively, by which the detailed self-assembled mechanism of the linear rod-coil multiblock copolymers is revealed. Our results are expected to provide guidance for the design of the rod-coil materials.

The surface-assisted hierarchical self-assembly of DNA origami lattices represents a versatile and straightforward method for the organization of functional nanoscale objects such as proteins and nanoparticles.Here,we demonstrate that controlling the binding and exchange of different monovalent and divalent cation species at the DNA-mica interface enables the self-assembly of highly ordered DNA origami lattices on mica surfaces.The development of lattice quality and order is quantified by a detailed topological analysis of high-speed atomic force microscopy(HS-AFM)images.We find that lattice formation and quality strongly depend on the monovalent cation species.Na^(+)is more effective than Li^(+)and K^(+)in facilitating the assembly of high-quality DNA origami lattices,because it is replacing the divalent cations at their binding sites in the DNA backbone more efficiently.With regard to divalent cations,Ca^(2+)can be displaced more easily from the backbone phosphates than Mg^(2+)and is thus superior in guiding lattice assembly.By independently adjusting incubation time,DNA origami concentration,and cation species,we thus obtain a highly ordered DNA origami lattice with an unprecedented normalized correlation length of 8.2.Beyond the correlation length,we use computer vision algorithms to compute the time course of different topological observables that,overall,demonstrate that replacing MgCl_(2) by CaCl_(2) enables the synthesis of DNA origami lattices with drastically increased lattice order.

The amphiphilic multiarm copolymers were synthesized through the modification of commercially available hyperbranched polyesters（Boltorn H40） with N-ε-carbobenzoxy-L-Lysine N-carboxyanhydride（ZLys-NCA）.After being condensed with N-Boc-phenylalanine（Boc-^NPhe） and deprotected the Boc-groups in trifluoroacetic acid（TFA）,the original terminal hydroxyl groups were transformed into the amino groups and then initiated the ring-opening polymerization of ZLys-NCA.The hydrophilic poly（L-lysine） was grafted to the surface of Boltorn H40 successfully after the protecting benzyl groups were removed by the HBr solution in glacial acetic acid（33 wt%）.The resulting multiarm copolymers were characterized by the ^1H-NMR,GPC and FTIR.The arm length calculated by NMR and GPC analysis was about 3 and 13 lysine-units for H40-Phe-PLysl and H40-Phe-PLys2 respectively.Due to the amphiphilic molecular structure,they displayed ability to self-assemble into spherical micelles in aqueous solution with the average diameter in the range from 70 nm to 250 nm.The CMC of H40-Phe-PLysl and H40-Phe-PLys2 was 0.013 mg/mL and 0.028 mg/mL,respectively, indicating that H40-Phe-PLysl with shorter arm length is easier to self-assemble than H40-Phe-PLys2 with longer arm length.

Highly intricate surface architectures derived from patterned polymer microstructures have received increasing concern in recent years. Directional photo-manipulation （DPM） of azopolymers is one of the effective strategies to tune the patterned polymer microstructures through directional mass migration （DMM） upon polarized light illumination. In this feature article, we emphasize the latest advances of DPM on azopatterns created by self-assembly. The mechanism of DMM, the photo-manipulation performance, and functions of manipulated patterns are introduced in sequence. As presented, DPM can manipulate the as-prepared microstructures feasibly by taking the advantages of non-contacting and nondestructive characters. Moreover, the challenges and opportunities of DPM strategy are discussed in conclusion.

Hierarchical CdCO3 nanostructures with complex morphologies, such as tetragonal, pentagonal and hexagonal nanorings, can be prepared via self-assembly of nanocrystals in a solvothermal environment. XRD pattern indicated that the product is trigonal CdCO3 phase （PDF#850989） with cell constants a = 6.112 A and a = 47.4°. Based on our experimental results, a possible nanoring formation mechanism was proposed.

Controlled synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymer nanoparticles in a convenient way is an important and interest topic in polymer science. In this review, three formulations of polymerization-induced self-assembly to in situ synthesize block copolymer nanoparticles are briefly introduced, which perform by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer （RAFT） polymerization under heterogeneous conditions, e.g., aqueous emulsion RAFT polymerization, dispersion RAFT polymerization and especially the recently proposed seeded RAFT polymerization. The latest developments in several selected areas on the synthesis of block copolymer nano-assemblies are highlighted.

We herein report the synthesis and metal-directed coordination self-assembly behaviors of three new macrocyc- lic azacalix[4]aromatics that comprise various numbers of pyridine and pyrazine rings bridged by N-CH3 groups. Structural characterization of 1--3 explored that their conformations are fluxional in solution and each adopts a 1,3-alternate configuration in crystalline solids. The macrocyclic skeletons in azacalixaromatic 1--3 afford a good platform to designedly arrange coordination sites in a unique way relative to conventional multidentate ligands. Solid-state structures of three coordination self-assembled silver complexes （13--15） of 1 --3 determined by X-ray crystallography suggest that the nitrogen atoms on procumbent aromatics have better coordination ability than those on perpendicular aromatics and dictate the whole coordination self-assemblies. Unique discrete and 1D chain-like structures were thus obtained. This system may afford a deeper insight into the coordination self-assembly studies of heteroatom-bridged calixaromatics, possibly extending potential application of this novel macrocyclic polyden- tate organic compounds in the synthesis of functional metal organic framework formation.
