BACKGROUND: Hilar cholangiocarcinoma is associated with low resectability and poor survival. The aim of this study was to evaluate the roles of matrix metalloproteinases- 2 (MMP-2 ) and its tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) in tumor invasion or as a prognostic factor in patients with human hilar cholangiocarcinoma. METHODS: The expressions of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were investigated in patients. Paraffinized tissue sections ob- tained from 50 patients with human hilar cholangiocarcino- ma were analysed. The expressions of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were examined immunohistochemically. Image analysis with image-pro plus analysis software was used to semi- quantitatively determine the ratio of MMP-2 to TIMP-2. RESULTS: The expression levels of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were strongly associated with tumor hepatic invasion in pa- tients with hilar cholangiocarcinoma. Significant diffe- rences in the ratio of MMP-2 to TIMP-2 between some pathologic factors were observed in patients with hilar cholangiocarcinoma. CONCLUSIONS: MMP-2 plays an essential role in tumor invasion and metastasis,while TIMP-2 is shown to strongly inhibit cancer invasion and metastasis. The ratio of MMP-2 to TIMP-2 may be a prognostic indicator for patients with hilar cholangiocarcinoma.

Introduction: Tumour stage is the most important prognostic factor in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The aim of this study was to evaluate if female gender was a prognostic factor in different tumour stages in relation to histology and given therapy. Methods: From 1989-2008, 1497 patients in eastern Scania, in southern Sweden with 202,000 inhabitants, were referred and prospectively registered. Tumour stage, performance status, lung cancer type and primary therapy were registered. Results: In NSCLC, female patients in stages 1 and 2 who were treated with surgery had a better 5-year survival rate (79.4%), compared to males (60.6%;p = 0.0004). Female patients in stage 3 with active therapy (surgery and/or radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy) had a better 5-year survival than males (20.6% vs. 10.5%, respectively, p = 0.0006). Female patients with adenocarcinoma were favourable in stages 1-3. In stage 4, there was no survival difference between females and males. In SCLC, females with limited disease (LD) and active therapy (chemotherapy ±?radiotherapy ± surgery) had a higher 5-year survival rate (28%) than males (5.6%);p = 0.001. Females with extensive disease (ED) and active therapy (chemotherapy ± radiotherapy) had a better 5-year survival (3.9%) compared to males (0.7%);p = 0.023. In multivariate analyses, patient performance status at diagnosis was also an independent prognostic factor in all tumour stages of lung cancer. Conclusions: This population-based study corroborates a female survival advantage in NSCLC stages 1-3, but not in metastatic stage 4, and this is also demonstrated for the adenocarcinoma subgroup. The study also confirms better prognosis in females with SCLC in both LD and ED. The study also demonstrates the importance of patient performance status as a prognostic factor in all stages of lung cancer.

AIM To evaluate the changes in the 8^(th) edition American Joint Committee on Cancer(AJCC) for defining stage?ⅠB and?ⅡA pancreatic cancer and identify their prognostic *** Pancreatic cancer patients were selected from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results database(1973-2013). The enrolled patients were divided into?ⅠB and?ⅡA groups based on tumor size according to the 8^(th) edition AJCC criteria. Clinical characteristics, including age, gender, race, tumor size, primary site, and grade were summarized. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to explore the prognostic factors of the?ⅠB and?ⅡA stages of pancreatic cancer under new *** A total of 1349 pancreatic cancer patients were included. More patients had stage?ⅠB rather than stage?ⅡA. Stage?ⅠB tumors(54.85%) were mainly located in the head of the pancreas, while stage?ⅡA tumors were more often located in the tail and head of the pancreas(35.21% and 31.75%, respectively). The survival time of stage?ⅠB and?ⅡA patients had no significant difference. Univariate and multivariate analyses indicated that the prognostic factors of survival for stage?ⅠB and?ⅡA patients were different. for stage?ⅠB patients, age and primary site were the independent prognostic factors; for stage?ⅡA patients, age and grade were the independent prognostic factors. The risk of death was lower among patients aged ≤ 65 years than those aged > 65 *** The prognostic factors for stage?ⅠB and?ⅡA patients are different, but age is the independent prognostic factor for all patients. The survival time of stage?ⅠB and?ⅡA patients has no significant difference.

Background:Glioma has a large variation in *** study was to explore whether the expression of p53,MGMT,Ki67,VEGF,EGFR or Bcl-2 can be prognostic factors in glioma ***:A total of 441 glioma patients ranging from January 2008 to March 2017 were analyzed for the immunohistochemical expression of p53,MGMT,Ki67,VEGF,EGFR and *** information from glioma patients was collated:age,gender,grade,extent of surgery,postoperative treatment and disease ***:Overall,265 patients died from *** analysis demonstrated that the independent factors of overall survival（OS）were extent of surgery（p＜0.001）,p53（p=0.013）,MGMT（p＜0.001）and Ki67（p＜0.001）,and the independent factors of both progression-free survival（PFS）and OS were age（p＜0.001;p＜0.001）,gender（p=0.009;p=0.027）and grade（p=0.009;p=0.009）.Additionally,high expression of p53 and MGMT was associated with poor OS in chemoradiotherapy group（p=0.029,p=0.009）,and high p53 expression was associated with poor OS for low and high grade patients（p=0.008,p=0.034）.Conclusions:Extent of surgery,p53,MGMT and Ki67 are useful prognostic factors of ***,gender and grade are prognostic factors of both PFS and OS.P53 and MGMT are prognostic factors of OS in chemoradiotherapy group.P53 is a valuable molecular marker of OS regardless of grade.
