Background Although freshwater ecosystems cover less than 1%of the earth’s surface,they support extremely high levels of biodiversity and provide vital ecosystem ***,due to the introduction of non-native fishes,aquatic ecosystem functioning has been altered,and in some cases,declined *** the impacts of invasive species has proven *** this study,we examined the relative trophic position of native piscivorous fishes to estimate the effects of invasive nile tilapia on food webs in the downstream sections of an invaded large subtropical river,the Pearl River,***,we quantified how native piscivorous fish diets changed as the nile tilapia invasion *** The trophic position of the widely distributed and locally important economically harvested piscivorous culter fish(Culter recurviceps),mandarinfish(Siniperca kneri),and catfish(Pelteobagrus fulvidraco)lowered significantly in the invaded Dongjiang River compared to an uninvaded reference Beijiang *** lower trophic position of these piscivorous fishes was reflected by a major reduction in the proportion of prey fish biomass in their diets following the nile tilapia *** fishes in the diet of culter fish from the reference river(33%small fishes,17%zooplankton)shifted to lower trophic level zooplankton prey in the invaded river(36%zooplankton,25%small fish),possibly due to the presence of nile ***,small fishes in the diet of mandarinfish in the reference river(46%small fishes,11%aquatic insects)declined in the invaded river(20%aquatic insects,30%small fishes).Similarly,the diet of catfish from the reference river shifted from fish eggs(25%fish eggs,25%aquatic insects)to aquatic insects in the invaded river(44%aquatic insects,5%fish eggs).Conclusions The results of this study contributed to a growing body of evidence,suggesting that nile tilapia can modify trophic interactions in invaded *** is crucial to understand t

Effect of dietary genistein on growth performance,digestive enzyme activity,and body composition of nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus

An 8-week feeding experiment was performed to evaluate the effect of dietary genistein on growth performance,body composition,and digestive enzymes activity of juvenile nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus).Four isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were formulated containing four graded supplements of genistein:0,30,300,and 3 000 μg/*** diet was randomly assigned in triplicate to tanks stocked with 15 juvenile tilapia(10.47±1.24 g).The results show that 30 and 300 μg/gdietary genistein had no significant effect on growth performance of nile tilapia,but the higher level of genistein(3 000 μg/g)significantly depressed the final body weight and specific growth *** was no significant difference in survival rate,feed intake,feed efficiency ratio or whole body composition among all dietary *** assay of digestive enzymes showed that the diet containing 3 000 μg/ggenistein decreased stomach and hepatopancreas protease activity,and amylase activity in the liver and intestine,while a dietary level of300 μg/g genistein depressed stomach protease and intestine amylase ***,no significant difference in stomach amylase activity was found among dietary ***,the results of the present study indicate that a high level of dietary genistein(3 000 μg/g,or above) would significantly reduce the growth of nile tilapia,partly because of its inhibitory effect on the activity of major digestive ***,the detrimental effects of genistein,as found in soybean products,should not be ignored when applied as an alternative ingredient source in aquaculture.

Effects of dietary genistein on GH/IGF-I axis of nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus

There is considerable concern that isoflavones,such as genistein in fish feed composed of soybean protein,affects somatic growth in *** previous works demonstrated that 30 and 300 μg/g dietary genistein had no significant effect on growth performance in nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus),but the higher level of genistein(3 000 μg/g) significantly depressed *** study was conducted to further examine the effects of dietary genistein on the endocrine disruption on growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-I(GH/IGF-I) axis in nile tilapia(***).Juvenile fish were fed by hand twice daily to satiation with one of four isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets,each containing either 0,30,300 or3 000 μg/g *** an 8-week feeding period,plasma GH and IGF-I levels were investigated by radioimmunoassay and gene expression levels of gh,ghrelin,gnrhs,ghr,npy,npyrs,pacap,ghrs,igf-I,igf-Ir,and igfbp3 were examined by real-time *** results show that no significant change in plasma GH and IGF-I levels in fish fed with diets containing 30 μg/gand 300 μg/g *** expression of genes along the GH/IGF-I axis remained unaffected,except for igf-Ir,which was stimulated by the 300 μg/g genistein *** in fish fed the 3 000 μg/g genistein diet,the plasma GH and IGF-I levels decreased,and mRNA expression of gh,ghr2,npyr1,igf-I,and igf-Ir were also significantly *** contrast,npy and igfbp3 mRNA expression were *** study provides convincing evidence for growth impediment by genistein by disturbing the GH/IGF-I axis in nile tilapia ***.

This study investigated the effects of yellow mealworm meal(YM)replacing soybean meal(SBM)at different proportions(0%,15%,30%and 45%,referred as YM0,YM15,YM30 and YM45,respectively)on the flesh quality of nile tilapia.A total of 360 fish(70.0±0.12 g)were randomly divided into 4 groups(3 tanks per group).Fish were fed the experimental diet twice daily for 10 *** results showed that muscle protein content significantly decreased in YM30 and YM45,while the lipid content significantly decreased in YM45(P<0.05).The essential amino acids and flavor amino acids of the muscle were not affected by the YM substitution,while saturated fatty acid content decreased in YM30 and YM45 compared with YM0(P<0.05).Fillets in YM45 had higher hardness,gumminess,and a higher proportion of thin myofibers(≤100μm,P<0.05)than those in other *** analysis revealed that apoptosis and atrophy related genes were up-regulated,while the muscle antioxidant capacity decreased significantly in YM45(P<0.05),which may be related to the high acid value in YM45 *** findings indicated that YM could replace up to 30%SBM without substantially altering the flesh *** the replacement ratio increased to 45%,the flesh quality would *** attention should be paid to avoid feed rancidity which may affect the flesh quality of fish.

Uridine alleviates high-carbohydrate diet-induced metabolic syndromes by activating sirt1/AMPK signaling pathway and promoting glycogen synthesis in nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus)

Carbohydrates have a protein sparing effect,but long-term feeding of a high-carbohydrate diet(HCD)leads to metabolic disorders due to the limited utilization efficiency of carbohydrates in *** to mitigate the negative effects induced by HCD is crucial for the rapid development of *** is a pyrimidine nucleoside that plays a vital role in regulating lipid and glucose metabolism,but whether uridine can alleviate metabolic syndromes induced by HCD remains *** this study,a total of480 nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus)(average initial weight 5.02±0.03 g)were fed with 4 diets,including a control diet(CON),HCD,HCD+500 mg/kg uridine(HCUL)and HCD+5,000 mg/kg uridine(HCUH),for 8 *** results showed that addition of uridine decreased hepatic lipid,serum glucose,triglyceride and cholesterol(P<0.05).Further analysis indicated that higher concentration of uridine activated the sirtuin1(sirt1)/adenosine 5-monophosphate-activated protein kinase(AMPK)signaling pathway to increase lipid catabolism and glycolysis while decreasing lipogenesis(P<0.05).Besides,uridine increased the activity of glycogen synthesis-related enzymes(P<0.05).This study suggested that uridine could alleviate HCD-induced metabolic syndrome by activating the sirt1/AMPK signaling pathway and promoting glycogen *** finding reveals the function of uridine in fish metabolism and facilitates the development of new additives in aquatic feeds.

Double-edged effect of sodium citrate in nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus):Promoting lipid and protein deposition *** hyperglycemia and insulin resistance

Citrate is an essential substrate for energy metabolism that plays critical roles in regulating glucose and lipid metabolic ***,the action of citrate in regulating nutrient metabolism in fish remains poorly ***,we investigated the effects of dietary sodium citrate on growth performance and systematic energy metabolism in juvenile nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus).A total of 270nile tilapia(2.81±0.01 g)were randomly divided into three groups(3 replicates per group,30 fish per replicate)and fed with control diet(35%protein and 6%lipid),2%and 4%sodium citrate diets,respectively,for 8 *** results showed that sodium citrate exhibited no effect on growth performance(P>0.05).The whole-body crude protein,serum triglyceride and hepatic glycogen contents were significantly increased in the 4%sodium citrate group(P0.05).The 4%sodium citrate treatment significantly increased the serum glucose and insulin levels at the end of feeding trial and also in the glucose tolerance test(P<0.05).The 4%sodium citrate significantly enhanced the hepatic phosphofructokinase activity and inhibited the expression of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase isozyme 2 and phosphor-pyruvate dehydrogenase E1 component subunit alpha proteins(P<0.05).Additionally,the 4%sodium citrate significantly increased hepatic triglyceride and acetyl-Co A levels,while the expressions of carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1a protein were significantly down-regulated by the 4%sodium citrate(P<0.05).Besides,the 4%sodium citrate induced crude protein deposition in muscle by activating m TOR signaling and inhibiting AMPK signaling(P<0.05).Furthermore,the 4%sodium citrate significantly suppressed serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase activities,along with the lowered expression of pro-inflammatory genes,such as nfκb,tnfa and il8(P<0.05).Although the 4%sodium citrate significantly increased phosphor-nuclear factor-k B p65 prote

Light spectrum preference of nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) under different hunger levels

In order to improve the light welfare of nile tilapia in aquaculture,the influence of hunger level on light spectrum preference of nile tilapia was explored in this *** whole experiment was based on the emptying of the gastrointestinal contents,and carried out under the controlled laboratory *** light spectrum preference was assessed by counting the head location of fish in each experimental tank,which containing seven compartments(i.e.,red,blue,white,yellow,black,green and public area).t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding(t-SNE)was adopted to visualize the hunger level-based dynamic preference on light spectrum in two-dimensional *** to the clustering results,significant differences in light spectrum preferences of nile tilapia,under the different hunger levels,were *** addition,the average visit frequency in green compartment was significantly lower than that in other color compartments throughout the whole experiment,and the total visit frequency in red compartment was relatively higher during the whole experiment.
