Since 2015,stroke has become the leading cause of death and disability in china,posing a significant threat to the health of its citizens as a major chronic non-communicable disease.According to the china Stroke High-risk Population Screening and Intervention Program,an estimated 17.8 million[95%confidence interval(CI)17.6–18.0million]adults in china had experienced a stroke in 2020,with 3.4 million(95%CI 3.3–3.5 million)experiencing their first-ever stroke and another 2.3 million(95%CI 2.2–2.4 million)dying as a result.Additionally,approximately 12.5%(95%CI 12.4%–12.5%)of stroke survivors were left disabled,as defined by a modified Rankin Scale score greater than 1,equating to 2.2 million(95%CI 2.1–2.2 million)stroke-related disabilities in 2020.As the population ages and the prevalence of risk factors like diabetes,hypertension,and hyperlipidemia continues to rise and remains poorly controlled,the burden of stroke in china is also increasing.A large national epidemiological survey initiated by the china Hypertension League in 2017 showed that the prevalence of hypertension was 24.7%;the awareness,treatment,and control rates in hypertensive patients were:60.1%,42.5%,and 25.4%,respectively.A nationally representative sample of the Chinese mainland population showed that the weighted prevalence of total diabetes diagnosed by the American Diabetes Association criteria was 12.8%,suggesting there are 120 million adults with diabetes in china,and the awareness,treatment,and control rates in diabetic patients were:43.3%,49.0%,and 49.4%,respectively.The“Sixth National Health Service Statistical Survey Report in 2018”showed that the proportion of the obese population in china was 37.4%,an increase of 7.2 points from 2013.Data from 1599 hospitals in the Hospital Quality Monitoring System and Bigdata Observatory Platform for Stroke of china(BOSC)showed that a total of 3,418,432 stroke cases[mean age±standard error(SE)was(65.700±0.006)years,and 59.1%were male]were admitted during 2020.Of those,over 80.0%(81.9%)were ischemic

Background The thirteen-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine(PCV13)is not included in the national immu-nization program and is administered voluntarily with informed consent in china.In preparation for assessing the impact of pilot introduction in Hainan Province,we conducted a carriage study among children under 5 years of age from four locations in Hainan Province,china.Methods From March to June 2022,nasopharyngeal(NP)swabs,collected from healthy children aged younger than 59 months who lived in the 4 different locations(Haikou,Wanning,Baisha and Qiongzhong)in Hainan Province,were tested for pneumococcus using conventional culture.Pneumococcal isolates were serotyped using the Quel-lung reaction.Risk factors associated with pneumococcal colonization were assessed using univariate analysis and multivariable logistic regression adjusting for age,daycare attendance and other factors.Results Pneumococcus was isolated in 710(30.4%)of the 2333 children enrolled.Of 737 pneumococci,29 serotypes were identifed;60.9%were PCV13 serotypes;the most common vaccine serotypes were 6B(20.4%),19F(13.0%),6A(11.9%)and 23F(6.1%);and the most common nonvaccine serotypes were 23A(12.9%),34(6.1%)and nontypeable(NT)pneumococci(5.6%).Children vaccinated with PCV13 had lower carriage(17.7%vs 32.5%;P=0.0001)and fewer PCV13 serotypes(41.9%vs 62.7%;P=0.0017)compared to unimmunized children.After adjustment,NP carriage Was higher among children attending daycare(aOR=2.3,95%CI:1.7-3.2),living in rural areas(aOR=1.4,95%CI:1.1-1.8),living with siblings(aOR=1.3,95%CI:1.0-1.6)and whose mothers had completed senior high/technical sec-ondary school(aOR=1.5,95%CI:1.1-2.0).In contrast,completion of 3-4 doses of PCV13 were associated with a lower carriage rate(aOR=0.6,95%CI:0.4-0.9).Conclusions We established the baseline of pneumococcal carriage,serotype distribution and PCV13 immuni-zation rates among healthy children under 5 years of age in Hainan Province,prior to the introduction of PCV13 into the national immunization program.The high proport

Background Culex pipiens pallens andCulex pipiens quinquefasciatus are the dominant species ofCulex mosquitoes in china and important disease vectors. Long-term use of insecticides can cause mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel (vgsc) gene of mosquitoes, but little is known about the current status and evolutionary origins ofvgsc gene in different geographic populations. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the current status ofvgsc genes inCx. p. pallens andCx. p. quinquefasciatus in china and to investigate the evolutionary inheritance of neighboring downstream introns of thevgsc gene to determine the impact of insecticides on long-term evolution.Methods Sampling was conducted from July to September 2021 in representative habitats of 22 provincial-level administrative divisions in china. Genomic DNA was extracted from 1308 mosquitoes, the IIS6 fragment of thevgsc gene on the nerve cell membrane was amplified using polymerase chain reaction, and the sequence was used to evaluate allele frequency and knockdown resistance (kdr) frequency. MEGA 11 was used to construct neighborjoining (NJ) tree. PopART was used to build a TCS network.Results There were 6 alleles and 6 genotypes at the L1014 locus, which included the wild-type alleles TTA/L and CTA/L and the mutant alleles TTT/F, TTC/F, TCT/S and TCA/S. The geographic populations with akdr frequency less than 20.00% were mainly concentrated in the regions north of 38° N, and the geographic populations with akdr frequency greater than 80.00% were concentrated in the regions south of 30° N.kdr frequency increased with decreasing latitude. And within the same latitude, the frequency ofkdr in large cities is relatively high. Mutations were correlated with the number of introns. Secular trends of asthma mortality in china and the United States from 1990 to 2019

Background:Asthma imposes a large healthcare burden in china and the United States(US).However,the trends of asthma mortality and the relative risk factors have not been comparatively analyzed between the countries.The aim of this study was to compare the mortality and risk factors between china and the US.Methods:The deaths,and mortality rates of asthma in china and the US during 1990–2019 were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.The age–period–cohort model was used to estimate these mortality rates based on a log-linear scale with additive age,period,and cohort effects.The population attributable fractions of risk factors for asthma were estimated.Results:In 1990–2019,the asthma mortality rate was higher in china than in the US.The crude and age-standardized asthma mortality rates trended downward in both china and the US from 1990 to 2019.The decline in mortality was more obvious in china.Mortality gap between the two countries was narrowing.A sex difference in asthma mortality was observed with higher mortality in males in china and females in the US.The age effects showed that mortality increased with age in adults older than 20 years,particularly in the elderly.Downward trends were generally observed in the period and cohort rate ratios in both countries,with china experiencing a more obvious decrease.Smoking and high body mass index(BMI)were the leading risk factors for asthma mortality in china and the US,respectively.Mortality attributable to occupational asthmagens and smoking decreased the most in china and the US,respectively.Conclusions:In 1990–2019,the asthma mortality rate was higher in china than in the US;however,the mortality gap has narrowed.Mortality increased with age in adults.The improvements in asthma death risk with period and birth cohort were more obvious in china than in the US.Smoking,high BMI,and aging are major health problems associated with asthma control.The role of occupational asthmagens in asthma mortality underscores the importance of management and preventi

Plant viruses are a group of intracellular pathogens that persistently threaten global food security.Significant advances in plant virology have been achieved by Chinese scientists over the last 20 years,including basic research and technologies for preventing and controlling plant viral diseases.Here,we review these milestones and advances,including the identification of new crop-infecting viruses,dissection of pathogenic mechanisms of multiple viruses,examination of multilayered interactions among viruses,their host plants,and virus-transmitting arthropod vectors,and in-depth interrogation of plantencoded resistance and susceptibility determinants.Notably,various plant virus-based vectors have also been successfully developed for gene function studies and target gene expression in plants.We also recommend future plant virology studies in china.

Cancer statistics for young adults aged 20 to 49 years in china from 2000 to 2017:a population-based registry study

An increasing cancer incidence among adults younger than 50 years has been reported for several types of cancer in multiple countries.We aimed to report cancer profiles and trends among young adults in china.Data from the china Cancer Registry Annual Report were used to estimate incidence and mortality among young adults(ages 20–49 years)in china in 2017,and an age-period-cohort model was employed to estimate the average annual percent change(AAPC)in incidence and mortality from 2000 to 2017.All 25 cancer types were grouped into obesity-or overweight-associated cancers(12 cancer types)and additional cancers(13 cancer types).In 2017,there were 681,178new cases and 214,591 cancer deaths among young adults in china.Among young adults,the most common cancers were thyroid,breast,cervical,liver,lung,and colorectal cancer,and the leading causes of cancer deaths were liver,lung,cervical,stomach,breast,and colorectal cancer.From 2000 to 2017,the cancer incidence increased for all cancers combined among young adults,with the highest AAPC(1.46%)for adults aged 20–24 years,while cancer mortality decreased,with the highest AAPC(-1.63%)for those aged 35–39 years.In conclusion,the cancer incidence in china has increased among young adults,while cancer mortality has decreased for nearly all ages.Cancer control measures,such as obesity control and appropriate screening,may contribute to reducing the increasing cancer burden among young adults.

Traumatic spinal cord injury is potentially catastrophic and can lead to permanent disability or even death.china has the largest population of patients with traumatic spinal cord injury.Previous studies of traumatic spinal cord injury in china have mostly been regional in scope;national-level studies have been rare.To the best of our knowledge,no national-level study of treatment status and economic burden has been performed.This retrospective study aimed to examine the epidemiological and clinical features,treatment status,and economic burden of traumatic spinal cord injury in china at the national level.We included 13,465 traumatic spinal cord injury patients who were injured between January 2013 and December 2018 and treated in 30 hospitals in 11 provinces/municipalities representing all geographical divisions of china.Patient epidemiological and clinical features,treatment status,and total and daily costs were recorded.Trends in the percentage of traumatic spinal cord injuries among all hospitalized patients and among patients hospitalized in the orthopedic department and cost of care were assessed by annual percentage change using the Joinpoint Regression Program.The percentage of traumatic spinal cord injuries among all hospitalized patients and among patients hospitalized in the orthopedic department did not significantly change overall(annual percentage change,-0.5%and 2.1%,respectively).A total of 10,053(74.7%)patients underwent surgery.Only 2.8%of patients who underwent surgery did so within 24 hours of injury.A total of 2005(14.9%)patients were treated with high-dose(≥500 mg)methylprednisolone sodium succinate/methylprednisolone(MPSS/MP);615(4.6%)received it within 8 hours.The total cost for acute traumatic spinal cord injury decreased over the study period(-4.7%),while daily cost did not significantly change(1.0%increase).Our findings indicate that public health initiatives should aim at improving hospitals’ability to complete early surgery within 24 hours,which is associated with improved sensorimot

china faces a disproportionate cancer burden to the population size and is undergoing a transition in the cancer spectrum.We extracted data in five aspects of cancer incidence,mortality,survival,staging distributions,and attribution to risk factors in china,the USA and worldwide from open-source databases.We conducted a comprehensive secondary analysis of cancer profiles in china in the above aspects,and compared cancer statistics between china and the USA.A total of 4,546,400 new cancer cases and 2,992,600 deaths occurred in china in 2020,accounting for 25.1%and 30.2%of global cases,respectively.Lifestyle-related cancers including lung cancer,colorectal cancer,and breast cancer showed an upward trend and have been the leading cancer types in china.41.6%of new cancer cases and 49.3%of cancer deaths occurred in digestive-system cancers in china,and the cancers of esophagus,nasopharynx,liver,and stomach in china accounted for over 40%of global cases.Infection-related cancers showed the highest population-attributable fractions among Chinese adults,and most cancers could be attributed to behavioral and metabolic factors.The proportions of stage I for most cancer types were much higher in the USA than in china,except for esophageal cancer(78.2%vs.41.1%).The 5-year relative survival rates in china have improved substantially during 2000–2014,whereas survival for most cancer types in the USA was significantly higher than in china,except for upper gastrointestinal cancers.Our findings suggest that although substantial progress has been made in cancer control,especially in digestive system cancers in china,there was still a considerable disparity in cancer burden between china and the USA.More robust policies on risk factors and standardized screening practices are urgently warranted to curb the cancer growth and improve the prognosis for cancer patients.

Background:Cerebrovascular disease(CVD)ranks among the foremost factors responsible for mortality on a global scale.The mortality patterns of CVDs and temporal trends in china need to be well-illustrated and updated.Methods:We collected mortality data on patients with CVD from Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Disease Surveillance Points(CDC-DSP)system.The mortality of CVD in 2020 was described by age,sex,residence,and region.The temporal trend from 2013 to 2019 was evaluated using joinpoint regression,and estimated rates of decline were extrapolated until 2030 using time series models.Results:In 2019,the age-standardized mortality in china(ASMRC)per 100,000 individuals was 113.2.The ASMRC for males(137.7/10^(5))and rural areas(123.0/10^(5))were both higher when stratified by gender and urban/rural residence.The central region had the highest mortality(126.5/10^(5)),the western region had a slightly lower mortality(123.5/10^(5)),and the eastern region had the lowest mortality(97.3/10^(5)).The age-specific mortality showed an accelerated upward trend from aged 55-59 years,with maximum mortality observed in individuals over 85 years of age.The age-standardized mortality of CVD decreased by 2.43%(95%confidence interval,1.02-3.81%)annually from 2013 to 2019.Notably,the age-specific mortality of CVD increased from 2013 to 2019 for the age group of over 85 years.In 2020,both the absolute number of CVD cases and the crude mortality of CVD have increased compared to their values in 2019.The estimated total deaths due to CVD were estimated to reach 2.3 million in 2025 and 2.4 million in 2030.Conclusion:The heightened focus on the burden of CVD among males,rural areas,the central and western of china,and individuals aged 75 years and above has emerged as a pivotal determinant in further decreasing mortalities,consequently presenting novel challenges to strategies for disease prevention and control.
