Surgical management of uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema syndrome

AIm:To report outcomes of patients after intraocular lens(IOL)repositioning or exchange for the version of the uveitisglaucoma-hyphema(UGH)syndrome that does not include closed loop anterior chamber IOL(nUGH).mETHODS:Chart review of patients with nUGH who underwent IOL repositioning or exchange by one surgeon were *** main outcome measures were best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)as a decimal fraction preoperatively and postoperatively after IOL repositioning or *** findings evaluated included the presence of uveitis,hyphema,elevated intraocular pressure(IOP),and other complications such as pigment dispersion or vitreous *** number of anti-inflammatory and glaucoma medications were assessed before and after IOL repositioning or ***:The study included 14 pseudophakic *** median time at the onset of contemporary UGH after cataract extraction and IOL implantation(CE/IOL)was7.5 *** repositioning or exchange was performed at a mean duration of 8.1±4.7 mo(median:4 mo)after onset of *** mean BCVA was improved from 0.45±0.26 preoperatively after onset of UGH syndrome to 0.76±0.22(P=0.016)after IOL repositioning or *** the14 eyes,uveitis,elevated IOP,and hyphema were present preoperatively in 13,13,and 6 eyes,*** and hyphema resolved in all cases after IOL *** mean IOP was reduced from 26.4±4.5 mm Hg preoperatively to 14.7±4.9 postoperatively(P=0.01).The mean number of glaucoma medications used was reduced from 1.7±1.1 medications preoperatively to 0.8±1.08(P=0.04)***:IOL repositioning or exchange is an effective treatment in many cases for medically resistant contemporary UGH syndrome.

AIm： To investigate the intracellular apoptotic signals engaged by resveratrol in three gastric adenocarcinoma cancer cell lines, two of which （AGS and SNU-1） express p53 and one （KATO-m） with deleted p53. mETHODS： Nuclear fragmentation was used to quantitate apoptotic cells; caspase activity was determined by photometric detection of cleaved substrates; formation of oxidized cytochrome C was used to measure cytochrome C activity, and Western blot analysis was used to determine protein expression, RESULTS： Gastric cancer cells, irrespective of their p53 status, responded to resveratrol with fragmentation of DNA and cleavage of nuclear lamins A and B and PARP. Resveratrol, however, has no effect on mitochondria-associated apoptotic proteins Bcl-2, Bcl- xl, Bax, Bid or Smac/Diablo, and did not promote sub-cellular redistribution of cytochrome C, indicating that resveratrol-induced apoptosis of gastric carcinoma cells does not require breakdown of mitochondrial membrane integrity. Resveratrol up-regulated p53 protein in SNU-1 and AGS cells but there was a difference in response of intracellular apoptotic signals between these cell lines. SNU-1 cells responded to resveratrol treatment with down-regulation of survivin, whereas in AGS and KATO- 111 cells resveratrol stimulated caspase 3 and cytochrome C oxidase activities. CONCLUSION： These findings indicate that even within a specific cancer the intracellular apoptotic signals engaged by resveratrol are cell type dependent and suggest that such differences may be related to differentiation or lack of differentiation of these cells.

Equilibrium Gibbs'free energy calculations were used to determine metal segregation trends between boride and carbide solid solutions containing two metals that are relevant to dual phase high entropy *** model predicted that Ti had the strongest tendency to segregate to the boride phase followed by Zr,Nb,mo,V,Hf,and Ta,which matches experimental results of measured *** ratio of a metal in the carbide phase to the content of the same metal in the corresponding metal boride had a linear trend with the change in standard Gibbs'free energy of reaction for a metal carbide reacting with B_(4)C to produce its corresponding metal boride and *** proposed model was used to predict the changes in standard Gibbs'free energy for CrC→CrB_(2) to be−260 kJ and WC→WB_(2) to be 148 kJ,which indicates that Cr has the strongest segregation to the boride and W has the strongest segregation to the *** proposed model can be used to estimate the segregation of metals in dual phase high entropy boride-carbide ceramics of any boride/carbide ratio or metal content.

The potential to cryopreserve embryonic axes of desiccation-sensitive（recalcitrant） seeds is limited by damage during the desiccation necessary for low temperature survival,but the basis of this injury and how to reduce it is not well *** effects of drying rate on the viability,respiratory metabolism and free radical-mediated processes were therefore investigated during dehydration of Quercus robur L embryonic ***,assessed by evidence of germination and tetrazolium staining,showed a sharp decline at 0.27 and 0.8 g/g during rapid（〈12 h） or slow（3d） dehydration,*** dehydration therefore lowered the critical water content for *** any given water content rapid dehydration was associated with higher activities of the free radical processing enzymes,superoxide dismutase,catalase and glutathione reductase and lower levels of hydroperoxide and membrane *** dehydration was also associated with lower malate dehydrogenase activity,and a reduced decline in phosphofructokinase activity and in levels of the oxidized form of nicotinamide *** may have contributed to increased damage during slow dehydration,since viability declined even in hydrated storage after 3 *** results presented are consistent with rapid dehydration reducing the accumulation of damage resulting from desiccation induced aqueous-based deleterious reactions.

AIm： To conduct a retrospective study in 400 chronic hepatitis B patients in order to identify hepatitis B viral factors associated with complications of liver disease or development of hepatocellular carcinoma. mETHODS： The mean follow-up time was 83.6 ± 39.6 mo. Alpha-fetoprotein test and abdominal ultrasound were used for cancer surveillance. Hepatitis B basal core promoter mutants, precore mutants, genotypes, hepatitis B viral DNA （HBV DNA） level and hepatitis B e antigen （HBeAg） were measured. Univariate analysis and logistic regression were used to assess odds ratios for viral factors related to liver deaths and hepatocellular carcinoma development. RESULTS： During follow-up, 38 patients had liver deaths not related to hepatocellular carcinoma. On multivariate analysis, older age [odds ratio： 95.74 （12.13-891.31）, P 〈 0.0001], male sex [odds ratio： 7.61 （2.20-47.95）; P = 0.006], and higher Iogzo HBV DNA [odds ratio： 4.69 （1.16-20.43）; P 〈 0.0001] were independently predictive for these liver related deaths. Also, 31 patients developed hepatocellular carcinoma. multivariate analysis showed that older age [odds ratio： 26.51 （2.36-381.47）; P = 0.007], presence of precore mutants [odds ratio： 4.23 （1.53-19.58）, P = 0.02] and presence of basal core promoter mutants [odds ratio： 2.93 （1.24-7.57）; P = 0.02] were independent predictors for progression to hepatocellular carcinoma. CONCLUSION： Our results show that high levels of baseline serum HBV DNA are associated with non- hepatocellular carcinoma-related deaths of liver failure, while genetic mutations in the basal core promoter and precore regions are predictive for development of hepatocellular carcinoma.

An Overview of mODIS Radiometric Calibration and Characterization

The moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer （mODIS） is one of the key instruments for NASA＇s Earth Observing System （EOS）, currently operating on both the Terra and Aqua satellites. The mODIS is a major advance over the previous generation of sensors in terms of its spectral, spatial, and temporal resolutions. It has 36 spectral bands： 20 reflective solar bands （RSB） with center wavelengths from 0.41 to 2.1 μm and 16 thermal emissive bands （TEB） with center wavelengths from 3.7 to 14.4 μm, making observations at three spatial resolutions： 250 m （bands 1-2）, 500 m （bands 3-7）, and lkm （bands 8-36）. mODIS is a cross-track scanning radiometer with a wide field-of-view, providing a complete global coverage of the Earth in less than 2 days. Both Terra and Aqua mODIS went through extensive pre-launch calibration and characterization at various levels. In orbit, the calibration and characterization tasks are performed using its on-board calibrators （OBCs） that include a solar diffuser （SD） and a solar diffuser stability monitor （SDSm）, a v-grooved flat panel blackbody （BB）, and a spectro-radiometric calibration assembly （SRCA）. In this paper, we present an overview of mODIS calibration and characterization activities, methodologies, and lessons learned from pre-launch characterization and in-orbit operation. Key issues discussed in this paper include in-orbit efforts of monitoring the noise characteristics of the detectors, tracking the solar diffuser and optics degradations, and updating the sensor＇s response versus scan angle. The experiences and lessons learned through mODIS have played and will continue to play major roles in the design and characterization of future sensors.

We derive the explicit fundamental solutions for a class of degenerate(or singular)one- parameter subelliptic differential operators on groups of Heisenberg(H)*** extends the result of Kaplan for the sub-Laplacian on H-type groups,which in turn generalizes Folland's result on the Heisenberg *** an application,we obtain a one-parameter representation formula for Sobolev functions of compact support on H-type *** choosing the parameter equal to the homogeneous dimension Q and using the mose-Trudinger inequality for the convolutional type operator on stratified groups obtained in[18].we get the following theorem which gives the best constant for the moser- Trudiuger inequality for Sobolev functions on H-type groups. Let G be any group of Heisenberg type whose Lie algebra is generated by m left invariant vector fields and with a q-dimensional *** Q=m+2q.Q'=Q-1/Q and Then. with A_Q as the sharp constant,where ▽G denotes the subelliptic gradient on G. This continues the research originated in our earlier study of the best constants in moser-Trudinger inequalities and fundamental solutions for one-parameter subelliptic operators on the Heisenberg group [18].

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide and arises secondary to the progressive accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations in normal colon cells,which results in a polyp-to-cancer progression *** is known that individuals with a personal history of colon adenomas or cancer are at increased risk for metachronous colon *** explanation for this increased risk could be field cancerization,which is a phenomenon in which the histologically normal tissue in an organ is primed to undergo *** alterations appear to be promising markers for field *** this review,we discuss field cancerization in the colon and the data supporting the use of methylated DNA as a biomarker for this phenomenon.

The minimum Number of Attempts for a Reliable Isometric Strength Test Score

Purpose The maximal isometric strength test is widely used in general,athletic,and clinical ***,this test has often been used without considering how many trials are needed or appropriate to obtain reliable test ***,the aim of this study was to examine the maximal isometric strength test in upper and lower body for the purpose of determining the reliability of best isometric strength score and the ideal number of trials for a reliable test *** One hundred and twelve healthy adults were assigned to four different groups(elbow flexion with the vertical and horizontal forearm positions,knee flexion,and knee extension).After familiarization,all participants performed three maxi-mal isometric voluntary contractions with the designated muscle *** reliability of best isometric strength test score was calculated using the intraclass correlation coefficients(ICC)from a one-way ANOVA *** Spearman-Brown prophecy formula was used to identify the minimum number of trials *** The reliability of the best maximal isometric strength test scores out of three trials were high(ICC=0.92 to 0.98).At least two trials of maximal isometric strength test for knee flexion and one trial for elbow flexion and knee extension would be necessary to achieve an acceptable reliability coefficient of *** addition,one trial of elbow flexion would be enough for women,but men would need two *** Our results suggest that overall,at least two trials would be necessary to test isometric strength in upper and lower body muscles in both sexes.
