Potential factors associated with clinical stage of nasopharyngeal carcinoma at diagnosis: a case–control study

Background: In China, most patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC) are diagnosed at a late stage and con?sequently have a poor prognosis. This study aimed to investigate potential factors associated with the clinical stage of NPC at ***: Data were obtained from 118 patients with early?stage NPC and 274 with late?stage NPC who were treated at Sun Yat?sen University Cancer Center between August 2014 and July 2015. Patients were individually matched by age, sex, and residence, and a conditional logistic regression model was applied to assess the associa?tions of clinical stage at diagnosis with socioeconomic status indicators, knowledge of NPC, physical examinations, patient interval, and risk factors for ***: Although knowledge of early NPC symptoms, smoking cessation, and patient interval were important fac?tors, the number of cigarettes smoked per day, motorbike ownership, and physical examination exhibited the strong?est associations with the clinical stage of NPC at diagnosis. Compared with smoking fewer than ten cigarettes a day, smoking 10–30 cigarettes [odds ratio(OR) 4.03; 95% confidence interval(CI) 1.11–14.68] or more than 30 cigarettes(OR 11.46; 95% CI 1.26–103.91) was associated with an increased risk of late diagnosis. Compared with not owning a motorbike, owning a motorbike(OR 0.38; 95% CI 0.23–0.64) was associated with early diagnosis. Subjects who under?went physical examinations were less likely to receive a late diagnosis than those who did not undergo examinations(OR 0.50; 95% CI 0.28–0.89). However, indicators of wealth were not significant ***: Initiatives to improve NPC patient prognosis should aim to promote knowledge about early symptoms and detection, health awareness, and accessibility to health facilities among all patients, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Association of the Asp312Asn and Lys751 Gln polymorphisms in the XPD gene with the risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma:evidence from a meta-analysis

Polymorphisms in DNA repair genes may alter DNA repair capacity and,consequently,lead to genetic instability and *** studies have investigated the association of the Asp312 Asn and Lys751 Gln polymorphisms in the xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group D {XPD) gene with the risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma(NHL),but the conclusions have been ***,we performed this meta-analysis to more precisely estimate these relationships.A systematic literature search was performed using the PubMed,Embase,and Chinese Biomedical(CBM) ***,6 studies of Asp312 Asn,comprising 3,095 cases and 3,306 controls,and 7studies of Lys751 Gln,consisting of 3,249 cases and 3,676 controls,were *** odds ratios(ORs) and 95%confidence intervals(CIs) were calculated to assess the strength of each ***,no association was observed between the Asp312 Asn polymorphism and NHL risk(homozygous:OR = 1.11,95%CI = 0.94-1.32;heterozygous:OR = 1.00,95%CI = 0.89-1.11;recessive:OR = 1.12,95%CI = 0.95-1.31;dominant:OR = 1.02,95%CI = 0.92-1.13;and allele comparison:OR = 1.04,95%CI = 0.96-1.12) or between the Lys751 Gln polymorphism and NHL risk(homozygous:OR = 0.97,95%CI = 0.83-1.15;heterozygous:OR = 0.96,95%CI = 0.86-1.06;recessive:OR = 1.00,95%CI = 0.86-1.16;dominant:OR = 0.96,95%CI = 0.87-1.06;and allele comparison:OR = 0.98,95%CI = 0.91-1.05).Furthermore,subgroup analyses did not reveal any association between these polymorphisms and ethnicity,the source of the controls,or the NHL *** results indicated that neither the Asp312 Asn nor Lys751 Gln XPD polymorphism was related to NHL *** and well-designed prospective studies are required to confirm this finding.

Plasma microRNA profiling in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients reveals miR-548q and miR-483-5p as potential biomarkers

MicroRNAs(miRNAs), which play a role in tumorigenesis, may also serve as diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers. However, studies on human miRNA profiles in plasma from nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC) patients are in their infancy. Here, we used microarrays to perform systematic profiling of human miRNAs in plasma from NPC patients. We subsequently used real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(Q-PCR) to validate miRNAs with aberrant expression that could serve as potential biomarkers. By comparing the plasma miRNA profiles of 31 NPC patients and 19 controls, 39 of 887 human miRNAs were found to be aberrantly expressed. Considering the fold change and P value, miR-548q and miR-483-5p were validated in 132 samples from 82 NPC patients and 50 controls. Moreover, high expression of miR-548q and miR-483-5p was further found in 3 NPC cell lines and clinical biopsy tissues from 54 NPC patients and 22 controls. Our results revealed that miR-548q and miR-483-5p are potential biomarkers of NPC. Combining the receiver operating characteristic(ROC) analyses of these 2 miRNAs, an area under the ROC curve(AUC) of 0.737 with 67.1% sensitivity and 68.0% specificity were obtained, showing the preliminary diagnostic value of plasma miRNAs. Moreover, most NPC patients with a poor outcome exhibited high expression(> median) of miR-548q(70.6%) and miR-483-5p(64.7%) in tissue samples, indicating their prognostic value. The high expression levels of miR-548q and miR-483-5p in plasma, cell lines, and clinical tissues of NPC patients indicate that their roles in NPC should be explored in the future.

Spinel MnCo_(2)O_(4) is a promising energy storage candidate as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries owing to synergistic effects of two intrinsic solid-state redox ***,low conductivity,poor rate capacity and rapid capacity fading have seriously impaired its practical *** overcome the inferiorities,urchin-like MnCo_(2)O_(4)@C core–shell nanowire arrays have been fabricated directly within a porous copper current collector via a facile hydrothermal method followed by a chemical vapor deposition carbonization *** a typical nanowire,the core is composed of interconnected MnCo_(2)O_(4)nanoparticles and the shell shows as a thin amorphous carbon *** integrated MnCo_(2)O_(4)@C/Cu structure could act as working anodes without using additives or polymer *** MnCo_(2)O_(4)@C/Cu possesses slightly longer Li-ion insertion/desertion pathway than that of MnCo_(2)O_(4)/Cu,the carbon shell could effectively prevent the pulverization of MnCo_(2)O_(4) and lower down charge transfer resistance and actively participate in Li-ion *** rearrangement of carbon atoms during lithiation/delithiation cycling could inhibit the formation of passive solid electrolyte interphase *** a result,the MnCo_(2)O_(4)@C/Cu electrode presents superior rate capacity(600 mAh·g^(−1) at 1 A·g^(−1)) and better stability(797 mAh·g^(−1) after 200 cycles at 100 mA·g^(−1)).The excellent reversible Li ion storage capacity,cycling stability and rate capacity endow MnCo_(2)O_(4)@C/Cu great potential as stable and high output integrated anode materials in Li-ion batteries.

UAV-assisted cooperative offloading energy efficiency system for mobile edge computing

Reliable communication and intensive computing power cannot be provided effectively by temporary hot spots in disaster areas and complex terrain ground *** this has greatly developed the application and integration of UAV and Mobile Edge Computing(MEC)to the Internet of Things(loT).However,problems such as multi-user and huge data flow in large areas,which contradict the reality that a single UAV is constrained by limited computing power,still *** to allowing UAV collaboration to accomplish complex tasks,cooperative task offloading between multiple UAVs must meet the interdependence of tasks and realize parallel processing,which reduces the computing power consumption and endurance pressure of *** the computing requirements of the user terminal,delay constraint of a computing task,energy constraint,and safe distance of UAV,we constructed a UAV-Assisted cooperative offloading energy efficiency system for mobile edge computing to minimize user terminal energy ***,the resulting optimization problem is originally nonconvex and thus,difficult to solve *** tackle this problem,we developed an energy efficiency optimization algorithm using Block Coordinate Descent(BCD)that decomposes the problem into three convex ***,we jointly optimized the number of local computing tasks,number of computing offloaded tasks,trajectories of UAV,and offloading matching relationship between multi-UAVs and multiuser *** results show that the proposed approach is suitable for different channel conditions and significantly saves the user terminal energy consumption compared with other benchmark schemes.

Spectroscopic ellipsometry is a potent method that is widely adopted for the measurement of thin film thickness and refractive *** conventional ellipsometers utilize mechanically rotating polarizers and grating-based spectrometers for spectropolarimetric ***,we demonstrated a compact metasurface array-based spectroscopic ellipsometry system that allows single-shot spectropolarimetric detection and accurate determination of thin film properties without any mechanical *** silicon-based metasurface array with a highly anisotropic and diverse spectral response is combined with iterative optimization to reconstruct the full Stokes polarization spectrum of the light reflected by the thin film with high ***,the film thickness and refractive index can be determined by fitting the measurement results to a proper material model with high *** approach opens up a new pathway towards a compact and robust spectroscopic ellipsometry system for the high throughput measurement of thin film properties.

Numerical investigation of the coupled aero-hydrodynamic performances of a semi-submersible floating offshore wind turbine with inclined columns

Numerical investigations of floating platforms with different outer column inclined angles under two operating conditions of regular wave and irregular wave are presented in this paper.A coupled aero-hydrodynamic computational fluid dynamics in-house solver FOWT-UALM-SJTU is applied for the ***,the validation for wave and wind generation are conducted to determine mesh distribution *** on these,the hydrodynamic motion response,aerodynamic performance and wake flow are analyzed to explore the impact of inclined *** spectral analysis on the motion response under wave action,discuss the aerodynamic attack angle and inflow wind velocity along the blade spanwise direction in detail,reveal different trends in wake development and *** results show that for the regular wave condition with the increase of inclined angles,the equilibrium position of surge motion is constantly rising,while pitch is *** maximum root mean square(rms)value occurs at angle=30°,compared with the original OC4 FOWT,the rms in power and thrust increase 0.35%,0.71%.And there are two low regions of attack angle and high regions of axial inflow velocity,corresponding to aerodynamic *** spectral analysis indicates that the natural frequency of pitch motion will increase with inclined ***,from the middle to far region of wake flow,the velocity recovery of FOWT with inclined angle will become faster,which is beneficial for downstream turbines to enhance more wind energy.
