The Long-term Survival Chances of Young Massive Star Clusters

We review the long-term survival chances of young massive star clusters （YMCs）, hallmarks of intense starburst episodes often associated with Violent galaxy interactions. We address the key question as to whether at least some of these YMCs can be considered protoglobular clusters （GCs）, in which case these would be expected to evolve into counterparts of the ubiquitous old GCs believed to be among the oldest galactic building blocks. in the absence of significant external perturbations, the key factor determining a cluster＇s long-term survival chances is the shape of its stellar initial mass function （iMF）. it is, however, not straightforward to assess the iMF shape in unresolved extragalactic YMCs. We discuss in detail the promise of using high-resolution spectroscopy to make progress towards this goal, as well as the numerous pitfalls associated with this approach. We also discuss the latest progress in worldwide efforts to better understand the evolution of entire cluster systems, the disruption processes they are affected by, and whether we can use recently gained insights to determine the nature of at least some of the YMCs observed in extragalactic starbursts as proto-GCs. We conclude that there is an increasing body of evidence that GC formation appears to be continuing until today; their long-term evolution crucially depends on their environmental conditions, however.

This paper reveals that the implementation of inclusive education is an unfinished challenge,both within the system and for individual *** process of changing practices,by continually questioning the school’s responsibility for the(re)production of inequalities,exclusion,and unequal social relations,is riddled with obstacles,unpredictable situations,and strong *** particular,the researchers point out that many systemic mechanisms of school culture contribute to replicating and reifying hierarchical school experiences and exacerbating processes of institutional discrimination against immigrant backgrounds and/or racialized *** empirical research presented also highlights the school staff’s deficit thinking toward immigrant students and their *** results show that staff tend to use linguistic and cultural gaps between students and the school system to explain academic *** that as it may,the researchers as well as the school actors and students interviewed in this paper suggest multiple ways to improve inclusion in the school context,stressing the importance of giving voice to the various actors in order to move toward institutional transformation.

Weight hierarchies of linear codes satisfying the almost chain condition

The weight hierarchy of a linear [n, k;q] code C over GF(q) is the sequence (d1,d2,..., dk) where dr is the size of the smallest support of an r-dimensional subcode of C. An [n,k;q] code satisfies the chain condition if there exists subcodes D1 D2 … Dk = C of C such that Dr has dimension r and support of size dr for all r. Further, C satisfies the almost chain condition if it does not satisfy the chain condition, but there exist subcodes Dr of dimension r and support of size dr for all r such that D2 D3 Dk = C and D1 D3. A simple necessary condition for a sequence to be the weight hierarchy of a code satisfying the almost chain condition is given. Further, explicit constructions of such codes are given, showing that in almost all cases, the necessary conditions are also sufficient.

Optimisation of chemical purification conditions for direct application of solid metal salt coagulants:Treatment of peatland-derived diffuse runoff

The drainage of peatland areas for peat extraction, agriculture or bioenergy requires affordable, simple and reliable treatment methods that can purify waters rich in particulates and dissolved organic carbon. This work focused on the optimisation of chemical purification process for the direct dosage of solid metal salt coagulants. it investigated process requirements of solid coagulants and the influence of water quality, temperature and process parameters on their performance. This is the first attempt to provide information on specific process requirements of solid coagulants. Three solid inorganic coagulants were evaluated： aluminium sulphate, ferric sulphate and ferric aluminium sulphate. Pre-dissolved aiuminium and ferric sulphate were also tested with the objective of identifying the effects of in-line coagulant dissolution on purification performance. it was determined that the pre-dissolution of the coagulants had a significant effect on coagulant performance and process requirements. Highest purification levels achieved by solid coagulants, even at 30% higher dosages, were generally lower （5%-30%） than those achieved by pre-dissolved coagulants. Furthermore, the mixing requirements of coagulants pre-dissolved prior to addition differed substantially from those of solid coagulants. The pH of the water samples being purified had a major influence on coagulant dosage and purification efficiency. Ferric sulphate （70 mg/L） was found to be the best performing solid coagulant achieving the following load removals： suspended solids （59%-88%）, total organic carbon （56%-62%）, total phosphorus （87%-90%）, phosphate phosphorus （85%-92%） and total nitrogen （33%-44%）. The results show that the use of solid coagulants is a viable option for the treatment of peatland-derived runoff water if solid coagulant-specific process requirements, such as mixing and settling time, are considered.

Snow depth estimation is an important parameter that guides several hydrological applications and climate change *** advances in remote sensing technology and enhanced satellite observations,the estimation of snow depth at local scale still requires improved accuracy and *** advances in ubiquitous and wearable technology promote new prospects in tackling this *** this paper,a wearable ioT platform that exploits pressure and acoustic sensor readings to estimate and classify snow depth classes using some machine-learning models have been put ***,the results of Random Forest classifier showed an accuracy of 94%,indicating a promising alternative in snow depth measurement compared to in situ,LiDAR,or expensive large-scale wireless sensor network,which may foster the development of further affordable ecological monitoring systems based on cheap ubiquitous sensors.

Organic matter produced by algae and cyanobacteria: Quantitative and qualitative characterization

This work aims at characterizing organic matter produced by an alga Euglena gracil~ and a cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa and assessing the evolution of its characteristics during growth. A culture medium was optimized. The species growth phases were monitored using both visible spectrophotometry and flow cytometry cell counting. Organic matter fractionation according to hydrophobicity and specific UV absorbance （SUVA） index were used to specifically characterize the produced algal organic matter （AOM）. The AOM characteristics were both growth phase and species dependent. However, a similar evolution was observed. The hydrophilic fraction （HPi） was the major fraction whatever the growth phases and was almost the only one produced during lag and exponential phases. it represented around 75% of AOM during exponential phase and then decreased when the stationary phase appeared. it represented 46% and 60% of the AOM during late decline phase for the cyanobacteria and the alga respectively. The hydrophobic （HPO） and transphilic （TPH） fractions started to appear from the beginning of the stationary phase with more hydrophobic compounds coming from intracellular organic material of dying cells. HPO and TPH percentages still increased during the decline phase probably because of two additional processes： photo-dissolution and leaching of particulate organic matter from cells fragments. A comparison of AOM during late decline phase and natural organic matter （NOM） from Glane River （France） underlined that AOM was more fiydrophilic and presented a lower SUVA for each fractions than NOM. However, the difference between NOM and AOM hydrophobicity narrowed during decline phase.

Short-term effects of obestatin on hexose uptake and triacylglycerol breakdown in human subcutaneous adipocytes

AiM To study complete dose-dependent effects of obestatin on lipolytic and glucose transport activities in human adipocyte preparations highly responsive to *** Adipocytes were prepared by liberase digestion from subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue obtained from overweight subjects undergoing plastic surgery. The index of lipolytic activity was the glycerol released in the incubation medium, while glucose transport was assessed by [~3H]-2-deoxyglucose uptake *** When tested from 0.1 nmol/L to 1 μmol/L, obestatin did not stimulate glycerol release; it did not inhibit the lipolytic effect of isoprenaline and did not alter the insulin antilipolytic effect. Obestatin hardly activated glucose transport at 1 μmol/L only. Moreover, the obestatin stimulation effect was clearly lower than the threefold increase induced by insulin 100 nmol/*** Low doses of obestatin cannot directly influence lipolysis and glucose uptake in human fat cells.

in this article,we show how the Bayesian framework can be applied to a hold‑up case involving a possible shoe‑polish trace according to one of the *** article highlights the importance of interpreting data from the beginning of the examination through the preassessment *** a set of alternative propositions in agreement with the information provided by the parties is chosen,one can establish what is needed in the ***,limited data were available to assign factors such as transfer and rarity of the ***,we showed how specific case‑tailored experiments provide meaningful data for *** this case,the police had observed a trace on the jacket of a person who reported to have been pushed with the offender’s gun during the hold‑up *** the jacket was submitted to our laboratory,the exact nature of the trace was *** from this trace were collected and analyzed by stereomicroscopy,microscopy,and infrared *** obtained results supported that this trace was waxy *** literature dealing with the analysis of waxy materials generally uses solvent extraction‑based ***,as our analytical sequence allowed a good discrimination of different waxy products of known origin,we considered that this methodology was ***,it did not involve any extraction step that could lead to undesired compounds from the substrate(e.g.,dyes and additives).This article therefore suggests an alternative analytical sequence for the analysis of such material in casework.

Barium titanate nanocrystallites were synthesized by a hydrothermal technique from barium chloride and tetrabutyl titanate. Single-crystalline cubic perovskite Ba TiO_3 consisting of spherical particles with diameters ranging from 10 to 30 nm was easily achieved by this route. in order to study the influence of the synthesis process on the morphology and the optical properties, barium titanate was also prepared by a solid-state reaction. in this case, only the tetragonal phase which crystallizes above 900 was observed. High-temperature X-ray diffraction measurements were performed to investigate the crystallization temperatures as well as the particle sizes via the Scherrer formula. The lattice vibrations were evidenced by infrared spectroscopy. Eu^(3+)was used as a structural probe, and the luminescence properties recorded from Ba TiO_3 :Eu^(3+)and elaborated by a solid-state reaction and hydrothermal process were compared. The reddish emission of the europium is increased by the nanometric particles.
