The Inhibition Effects of Alkoxyl Thiourea Derivatives toward the Growth of Isolated Oscillatoria sp. from Kenyir Lake, Terengganu

In controlling eutrophication phenomenon, there were conventional methods which lead to negative effects to aquatic environment. This study was aimed to investigate the usage of synthesized thiourea compounds to inhibit the growth of Oscillatoria sp. in Kenyir lake, Terengganu, Malaysia. The inhibition effects of four eco-friendly alkoxyl thiourea derivatives compounds named as N-（（4-（decyloxy）phenyl）carbamothioyl）-4-methyl benzamide, N-（（4-（decyloxy）phenyl）carbamothioyl）-4-nitro benzamide, 4-chloro-N-（（4-（decyloxy）phenyl）carbamothioyl） benzamide and N-（（4-（decyloxy）phenyl）carbamothioyl） benzamide were examined onto the growth culture of Oscillatoria sp. These compounds were tested in 30 mL of Oscillatoria sp. cultures with different concentration of 16 μg·mL-1, 18 μg·mL-1, 20 μg·mL-1, 24 μg·mL-1 and 28 μg·mL-1respectively. The treatment flasks were supplied with an aerator for 24 hours under continuous illumination at 25 ℃. Chlorophyll-a concentration were extracted to calculate the inhibition percentage of each treatment. Overall, all these compounds showed inhibition effects towards the growth of Oscillatoria sp., with the highest inhibition of 37% by N-（（4-（decyloxy）phenyl）carbamothioyl）-4-methyl benzamide at the concentration of 18μg·mL-1. The methyl group that attach to the synthesized compound may contribute to the effectiveness of the compound which act as an algae inhibitor. However, extensive studies still need to be conducted in order to investigate the mechanism on how this compound reacts with Oscillatoria sp..

Socio-Demographic and Behavioral Factors for Serious Injury among Adolescents in Malaysia

This study was to determine the prevalence and socio-demographic associated factors for serious injury among adolescents in Malaysia. The study used data from the Malaysian Global School-based Health Survey which was conducted in 2012. Logistic regression analysis was used to establish associations. Of the 25,507 respondents, 34.9% (42.1% males and 27.8% females) reported having been in a serious injury. Compared to participants who were not bullied, those who reported being bullied were more likely to have sustained serious injury (aOR = 2.2;95% CI [1.95 - 2.48]). Adolescents who were involved in physical fighting were 57.5% (aOR = 2.75;95% CI [2.53 - 2.99]) and more likely to have sustained serious injury compared to those who were not involved in the fighting. Meanwhile, adolescents who used substances were 52.3% (aOR = 1.68 [1.52 - 1.85]) and more likely to have sustained serious injury compared to those who did not use substances. Serious injury is frequent among adolescents in Malaysia. Based on studies by Harel, suggestion where reduction of substance use and bullying may be assessed if they have an impact in reducing serious injury among adolescents. Furthermore, educational programmes that focus on the underlying causes and determinants of injury provide an effective and efficient method of injury prevention.

Objective:To evaluate antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of stembark of Shorea kunstleri(***)together with analysis of phytochemical and total phenolic ***:Extraction was conducted with different solvent polarity of n-hexane,dichloromethane(DCM)and methanol by using Soxhlet *** phenolic content was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu *** radical scavenging activity and inhibition of lipid peroxidation were evaluated with DPPH radical scavenging and ferric thiocyanate assays,*** activities were performed using disc diffusion method,minimum inhibition concentration(MIC),minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC),and minimum fungicidal ***:*** stembark extracts revealed presence of steroids,terpenoids,saponins,flavonoids,and phenolic *** extract exhibited the highest total phenolic content and free radical scavenging activity resulting in phenolic content of(8.340±0.003)g GAE/100 g of extract and(95.90±1.07)%DPPH inhibition(IC_(50)value of 18.6μg/mL),*** thiocyanate assay of n-hexane,DCM,and methanol extracts indicated lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity of(74.20±0.35)%,(74.00±0.10)%,and(72.80±0.27)%,*** antimicrobial and antifungal tests,methanol extract showed inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus(***),Candida albicans,and Candida tropicalis with inhibition zones of 10-12,18-22,and 18-19 mm,*** MIC test of methanol extract showed highest inhibition against Candida albicans and ***(0.04 and 0.08 mg/mL,respectively)while DCM extract exhibited the highest activity towards Candida tropicalis(MIC value of 0.63 mg/mL).Taken together,MBC test of methanol extract strongly demonstrated bactericidal effect against *** with MBC value of 0.08 mg/***:The study demonstrated that stembark extracts of *** possessed antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Solid polymeric electrolyte of poly(ethylene)oxide-50% epoxidized natural rubber-lithium triflate (PEO-ENR50-LiCF3SO3)

A solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) films consist-ing of polyethylene oxide (PEO), 50% epoxi-dized natural rubber (ENR50) and LiCF3SO3 with various compositions of PEO-ENR50 and vari-ous weight percentage of LiCF3SO3 were pre-pared by solution casting technique. The poly-mer electrolyte films were characterized using DSC, XRD and AC impedance spectroscopy. The SPE with the PEO-ENR50 composition of 70-30 shows the highest conductivity of 4.2 × 10-5 Scm-1 at the 15 wt.% of LiCF3SO3 compared with the other composition of PEO/ENR50. This composition was then chosen to investigate the effect of LiCF3SO3 on the thermal property, structure and conductivity of the electrolyte. The highest room temperature conductivity of 1.4 × 10-4 Scm-1 was achieved at 20 wt.% of LiCF3SO3. The conductivity result is supported by the DSC and XRD analysis which showed the semi- crystalline nature of PEO turning to amor-phous state due to the increase in LiCF3SO3 content.

Memory impairment in children is an ongoing issue worldwide related to a learning disability. This neurobiological condition has been suggested to associate with bisphenol A (BPA) exposure during pregnancy. BPA is an inorganic compound used to produce polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. We conduct this study to investigate the effects of prenatal BPA exposure on the level of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subunits, synaptic markers of the hippocampus and neurobehavioral outcomes in rats. The pregnant rats were given a daily dose of 5 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg of BPA with 0.5% Tween 80 orally from gestation day 2 until 21 (GD21). The level of GluN2A, GluN2B, PSD-95 and synapsin I in the hippocampus and its neurobehaviour outcomes were quantified and evaluated in the male foetus and adolescent rat. Prenatal BPA exposure reduced GluN2A, GluN2B, synapsin I and PSD-95 (Postsynaptic Density-95) in the male foetus and adolescent rat hippocampus compared to the control group. The prenatal BPA exposed rats demonstrated anxiety-related behaviour and impairment in aversive and spatial memory. The findings suggested that the impairment in neurobehavioral performance may inhibit the signalling pathway in the NMDA receptor subunits in the male foetus rat hippocampus leading to learning and memory deficits when reaching adolescence.

Objective:To characterize the Entamoeba histolytica(***)antigen(s)recognized by moribound amoebic liver abscess ***:Crude soluble antigen of *** was probed with sera of moribund hamsters in 1D-and 2D-Westem blot *** antigenic protein was then sent for tandem mass spectrometry *** corresponding gene was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21-AI to produce the recombinant *** ADP-forming acetyl-CoA synthetase(EhACS)protein.A customised ELISA was developed to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the recombinant ***:A^75 kDa protein band with a pl value of 5.91-6.5 was found to be antigenic;and not detected by sera of hamsters in the control *** mass spectrometry analysis revealed the protein to be the 77 kDa *** ADP-forming acetyl-CoA synthetase(EhACS).The customised ELISA results revealed 100%sensitivity and 100%specificity when tested against infected(n=31)and control group hamsters(n=5)serum samples,***:This rinding suggested the significant role of EhACS as a biomarker for moribund hamsters with acute amoebic liver abscess(ALA)*** is deemed pertinent that future studies explore the potential roles of EhACS in better understanding the pathogenesis of ALA;and in the development of vaccine and diagnostic tests to control ALA in human populations.

At present,a life-cycle assessment of energy storage systems(ESSs)is not widely available in the *** an assessment is increasingly vital nowadays as ESS is recognized as one of the important equipment in power systems to reduce peak demands for deferring or avoiding augmentation in the network and power *** the battery cost is still very high at present,a comprehensive assessment is necessary to determine the optimum ESS capacity so that the maximum financial gain is achievable at the end of the batteries’***,an effective life-cycle assessment is proposed in this paper to show how the optimum ESS capacity can be determined such that the maximum net financial gain is achievable at the end of the batteries’lifespan when ESS is used to perform peak demand reductions for the customer or utility *** findings reveal the positive financial viability of ESS on the power grid,otherwise the projection of the financial viability is often seemingly poor due to the high battery cost with a short battery *** improved battery degradation model is used in this assessment,which can simulate the battery degradation accurately in a situation whereby the charging current,discharging current,and temperature of the batteries are intermittent on a site during peak demand *** assessment is crucial to determine the maximum financial benefits brought by ESS.

Development and psychometric properties of the Malaysian elder abuse scale

Elder abuse is an emerging issue of serious concern with life-threatening consequences. This study aimed to develop and assess the validity and reliability of a new scale to assess elder abuse. A cross-sectional multistage sampling technique was used to obtain a nationally representative sample of older Malaysians. The iterative development process resulted in a 16-item, four-dimension scale. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a 10-item scale with three factors. The value of Cronbach’s alpha for total scale and its subscales indicated sufficient internal consistency. Multitrait scaling analysis also showed good convergent and discriminant validity. Furthermore, predictive validity of the proposed scale was established by demonstrating a statistically significant association between elder abuse and depression through multiple logistic regression analysis. The findings from this study demonstrate an acceptable level of validity and reliability for new scale. This scale can be used by health and social care workers to identify elder abuse cases.

Objective:To characterise a collection of pili-carrying and none pili-carrying pneumococcal isolates of clinical origin for serotypes,antibiotic resistance and ***:In total,42 clinical isolates were collected between October 2017 and December *** isolates were analysed for antimicrobial susceptibility,serotype distribution,detection of pneumococcal virulence and pilus *** sequence typing was performed only for piliated isolates,followed by phylogenetic ***:The common isolation sites among the pneumococcal isolates were tracheal aspirate(28.6%),blood(26.2%),and sputum(23.8%).Fifty percent isolates were resistant to erythromycin,tetracycline(50.0%)and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole(43.0%).The most frequent were serotypes 19F(28.6%),6A/B(23.8%)and 19A(14.3%).Piliated isolates were detected in a small proportion(33.3%);64.3%were ***320 was the prevalent sequence type among the piliated isolates and genetically related to the Pneumococcal Molecular Epidemiology Network clones Taiwan19F-14(CC271).In the phylogenetic analysis,some piliated isolates showed a close association having similar ST320,carrying serotype 19A and both pilus genes indicating their clonal ***:Pneumococcal lineages of piliated isolates have been globally disseminated and pili could have played a role in the spread of antibiotic resistant clones.

纠删码存储集群的一个关键设计目标是降低重构I/O所引起的网络流量,因为降低网络流量有助于缩短重构时间,进而提高可靠性.针对2个或多个失效节点并发重构这一研究话题,提出一种交叉式重构方案(interleaved reconstruction scheme,IRS).所有替换节点能协同、并行地重构所有失效分块.通过对现有集中式重构方案(centralized reconstruction scheme,CRec)和分散式重构方案(decentralizedreconstruction scheme,DRec)的I/O流进行分析,分析发现CRec中存储管理器和DRec中替换节点是重构性能的瓶颈.针对此,IRS从2个方面进行改进:1)替换节点充当重构节点进行并行式重构,消除CRec中管理器这一重构瓶颈;2)利用纠删码的编码结构特性,所有替换节点协同地重构所有失效分块,确保重构时只传输一次所需存活分块.在Reed-Solomon码存储集群上实现了上述3个重构方案,并用真实I/O trace进行对比测试.实验结果表明:当纠删码存储集群的编码参数为k=9和r=3时,IRS方案的双节点重构性能是其他2种重构方案的1.63倍;而3节点重构性能是其他2种重构方案的2.14倍.
