Carbon dots(CDs)have received immense attention in the last decade because they are easy-to-prepare,nontoxic,and tailorable carbon-based fluorescent *** can be categorized into three subgroups based on their morphology and chemical structure:graphene quantum dots(GQDs);carbon quantum dots(CQDs),and carbonized polymer dots(CPDs).The detailed structures of the materials can vary significantly,even within the same *** property is particularly predominant in chemically synthesized CPDs,as their formation proceeds via the polymerization-carbonization of molecules or polymer *** precursors endow CPDs with versatile structures and properties.A wide variety of carbon nanomaterials can be grouped under the category of CPDs because of their observed *** is important to understand the precursor-dependent structural diversity observed in *** nomenclature for all classes and types of CPDs is proposed for the better utilization of these emerging materials。

At present, the actual mechanism of the photoluminescence （PL） of fluorescent carbon dots （CDs） is still an open debate among researchers. Because of the variety of CDs, it is highly important to summarize the PL mechanism for these kinds of carbon materials; doing so can guide the development of effective synthesis routes and novel applications. This review will focus on the PL mechanism of CDs. Three types of fluorescent CDs were involved： graphene quantum dots （GQDs）, carbon nanodots （CNDs）, and polymer dots （PDs）. Four reasonable PL mechanisms have been confirmed： the quantum confinement effect or conjugated 7x-domains, which are determined by the carbon core; the surface state, which is determined by hybridization of the carbon backbone and the connected chemical groups; the molecule state, which is determined solely by the fluorescent molecules connected on the surface or interior of the CDs; and the crosslink- enhanced emission （CEE） effect. To give a thorough summary, the category and synthesis routes, as well as the chemical/physical properties for the CDs, are briefly introduced in advance.

Revealing the photoluminescence(PL)origin and mechanism is a most vital but challenging topic of carbon ***,confined-domain crosslink-enhanced emission(CEE)effect was first studied by a well-designed model system of carbonized polymer dots(CPDs),serving as an important supplement to CEE in the aspect of spatial ***“addition-condensation polymerization”strategy was adopted to construct CPDs with substituents exerting different degrees of steric *** effect of confined-domain CEE on the structure and luminescence properties of CPDs have been systematically investigated by combining characterizations and theoretical *** tunable spatial interactions dominated the coupling strength of the luminophores in one particle,and eventually resulted in the modulated PL properties of *** findings provide insights into the structural advantages and the PL mechanism of CPDs,which are of general significance to the further development of CPDs with tailored properties.

The second near-infrared(NIR-II,1,000 to 1,700 nm)molecular fluorophores containing donor–acceptor–donor conjugated backbone have attracted substantial attention due to their outstanding advantages,such as stable emission and facilely tuned photophysical ***,it is still challenging for them to simultaneously achieve high brightness and red-shifted absorption and ***,furan is adopted as the D unit to construct NIR-II fluorophores,demonstrating red shift of absorption,enhanced absorption coefficient,and fluorescent quantum yield when compared with the generally used thiophene *** high brightness and desirable pharmacokinetics of the optimized fluorophore,IR-FFCHP,endows improved performance for angiography and tumor-targeting ***,dual-NIR-II imaging of tumor and sentinel lymph nodes(LNs)has been achieved with IR-FFCHP and PbS/CdS quantum dots,enabling the in vivo imaging navigated LN surgery in tumor-bearing *** work demonstrates the potential of furan for constructing bright NIR-II fluorophores for biological imaging.

Histopathological diagnosis is a crucial part of surgical treatment,as it determines further treatment decisions and prognosis for *** to the heterogeneity of tumors,traditional histopathological diagnosis relies on histological and cytological morphological analysis of cryo-slides by well-trained pathologists,which is subjective,time-consuming,and lacks considerable ***,we engineer a series of tumor receptor-seeking dyes to automatically label and visually depict the tumor contour with antibody-free *** meso-chlorine on the cyclohexyl ring of dyes can covalently react with specific thiol groups in various tumor signature proteins to form stable dye@protein *** dye@protein complexes have significantly amplified fluorescence signals in tumor sites,enabling highresolution delineation of tumormargins and providing histological morphology information to potentially determine tumor *** orthogonal effect not only avoids errors caused by individual signature proteins,but also amplifies the fluorescence difference between tumor and normal ***,our method is easy to operate with a minimal detection time of only 4 *** tumor receptor-seeking dyes successfully assess tumor-positive margins from 66 resected breast tumor samples and 25 intraoperative cancer patients with 100%accuracy,providing a newgeneration technique for intraoperative pathologic diagnosis of tumor biopsy.

Plasmonic enhanced fluorescence(PEF)technology is a powerful strategy to improve the sensitivity of immunofluorescence microarrays(IFMA),however,current approaches to constructing PEF platforms are either expensive/time-consuming or reliant on specialized ***,we develop a completely alternative approach relying on a two-step protocol that includes the self-assembly of gold nanoparticles(GNPs)at the water–oil interface and subsequent annealing-assisted regulation of gold *** optimized thermal-annealing GNPs(TA-GNP)platform generates adequate hot spots,and thus produces high-density electromagnetic coupling,eventually enabling 240-fold fluorescence enhancement of probed dyes in the near-infrared *** clinical detection of human samples,TA-GNP provides super-high sensitivity and low detection limits for both hepatitis B surface antigen and SARS-CoV-2 binding antibody,coupled with a much-improved detection dynamic range up to six orders of *** fast detection,high sensitivity,and low detection limit,TA-GNP could not only substantially improve the outcomes of IFMA-based precision medicine but also find applications in fields of proteomic research and clinical pathology.
