AIM To evaluate the effect of a 12-mo supervised aerobic and resistance training, on renal function and exercise capacity compared to usual care *** Ninety-nine kidney transplant recipients(KTRs) were assigned to interventional exercise(Group A; n = 52) and a usual care cohort(Group b; n = 47). blood and urine chemistry, exercise capacity, muscular strength, anthropometric measures and health-related quality of life(HRQo L) were assessed at baseline, and after 6 and 12 mo. Group A underwent a supervised training three times per week for 12 mo. Group b received only general recommendations about home-based physical *** Eighty-five KTRs completed the study(Group A, n = 44; Group b, n = 41). After 12 mo, renal function remained stable in both groups. Group A significantly increased maximum workload(+13 W, P = 0.0003), V'O2 peak(+3.1 mL/kg per minute, P = 0.0099), muscular strength in plantar flexor(+12 kg, P = 0.0368), height in the countermovement jump(+1.9 cm, P = 0.0293) and decreased in body Mass Index(-0.5 kg/m^2, P = 0.0013). HRQo L significantly improved in physical function(P = 0.0019), physical-role limitations(P = 0.0321) and social functioning scales(P = 0.0346). Noimprovements were found in Group *** Twelve-month of supervised aerobic and resistance training improves the physiological variables related to physical fitness and cardiovascular risks without consequences on renal function. Recommendations alone are not sufficient to induce changes in exercise capacity of KTRs. Our study is an example of collaborative working between transplant centres, sports medicine and exercise facilities.

Almost every country requires some form of environmental licensing prior to the inception of development projects that may affect the integrity of the environment and its social *** developed a new conceptual and methodological model to instruct the assessment of the potential impacts posed by proposed *** to Human Interventions for Environmental Licensing Determination(SHIELD)includes a novel geomorphological interpretation of the Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA).It considers the impact of human interventions on geomorphological processes and landscape functioning in the context of the entire ecosystem,going further than the classical concept of *** susceptibility of the site informs the screening stage,allowing local conditions to help define the criteria used in the ***,the level of detail of the environmental baseline is scoped by considering the degree of disturbance of natural processes posed by human *** this geomorphological susceptibility model on different kinds of environments would allow shifting the environmental licensing practices from the prevailing anthropocentric and static conception of the environment towards an Ecosystem *** addresses the need to improve the screening and scoping stages that form the basis of the rest of any *** introduces several innovations to EIA including the incorporation of fuzzy logic,a preassembled database of contributions form experts,and a shifting of emphasis from the type of proposed intervention to the type of environment and its relative susceptibility.

Polysomnographic sleep aspects in liver cirrhosis: A case control study

AIM: To study sleep aspects and parameters in cirrhotic patients and assess the role of liver dysfunction severity in polysomnographic results. METHODS: This was a case-control study. Patients with a diagnosis of liver cirrhosis were consecutively enrolled in the study. Clinical examinations and laboratory liver tests were performed in all patients, and disease severity was assessed using the Child-Pugh score. The control group consisted of ageand gender-matched healthy volunteers. All individuals answered a questionnaire about habits, behaviors, and complaints related to sleep and were submitted to polysomnography. Sleep parameters were compared between the two groups, and separate analyses were performed among classesof Child-Pugh classification in the cirrhotic group. RESULTS: Forty-two cirrhotic patients and forty-two controls were enrolled. Compared to the control group, the cirrhotic group exhibited lower sleep efficiency (mean ± SD: 73.89% ± 14.99% vs 84.43% ± 8.55%, P b movements (10.56 ± 2.85/h vs 2.79 ± 0.61/h, P b and C cirrhotic patients revealed a significant reduction of REM sleep stage occurrence in individuals with severe liver disease (Child C patients) compared to Child A/b patients (polysomnography percentage of REM sleep stage of patients Child A: 16.1% ± 1.2%; Child b: 14.9% ± 1.2%; Child C: 8.6% ± 1.6%, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Cirrhosis was associated with shorter sleep time, reduced sleep efficiency, increased sleep latency, increased REM latency and reduced REM sleep. Additionally, disease severity influences sleep parameters.

To copy natural photosynthesis process we need to understand and explain the physics underneath its first step mechanism, which is “how to separate electrical charges under attraction”. but this Nature’s nanotechnological creation is not yet available to the scientific community. We present a new interpretation for the artificial and natural photosynthetic mechanism, concerning the electrical charges separation and the spent energy to promote the process. Interface (e–, h+) recombination and emission is applied to explain the photosynthetic mechanisms. This interpretation is based on energy bands relative position, the staggered one, which under illumination promotes (e–, h+) charges separation through the action of an interface electric field and energy consumption at the interface of both A/b generic materials. Energy band bending is responsible by the interface electric field (and the driving force) for the charges separation. This electric field can be as high or above that for p-n semiconductor junctions (104 - 105 V/cm). This physical effect is not considered by most of the researches. Without an electric field and without spending energy to separate electrical charges, any other existing model violates physical laws. The staggered energy band type is the only energetic configuration that permits charges separation under illumination and energy loss to perform the process. Application to natural photosynthesis and artificial photovoltaic material and their energetic configurations are discussed. Examples for A/b being III-V/III-V, TiO2/materials and II-VI/II-VI staggered energy band gap pairs are presented. In the proposed quantum mechanism, plants are able to eliminate most of the 79% of the absorbed visible light, according to the published reflection and transmission data. Moreover, the proposed mechanism can be applied to explain green fluorescent protein - GFP, charge transfer states - CTS and Fluorescent Resonance Energy Transfer - FRET. As recent litera

bradykinin (bK) b1 receptors are not normally expressed in physiological conditions but could be induced in immunopathological states. Molecular approaches have confirmed that bK b1 receptor gene is transcription-ally induced in injured tissues. In these situations, the cytokine network and other proinflammatory mediators are close linked to bK b1 receptor *** this article, we describe the functional characterization of the bK b1 receptor up-regulation process in the isolated human umbilical vein and the pharmacological tools employed to demonstrate the de novo synthesis of these receptors. bK b1 receptors are up-regulated in a time- and protein synthesis-dependent process. Furthermore, in this tissue we have demonstrated the close link between the bK b1 receptor sensitization and proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1 beta and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. We also discuss the possible relationship between nuclear factor-kappa b and bK b1 receptor induction in human umbilical vein.

Adsorption Kinetics of Matter Contained in a Leachate Using Eggshell and Activated Carbon

The generation of highly polluting leachate from Sanitary Landfills has prompted the development of technologies applicable to treatment of these liquids. The aim of this study was to determine the kinetics of adsorption of organic and inorganic matter contained in pre-treated leachate (by advanced oxidation by the Fenton reaction);after two adsorbents were used, first eggshell and then activated carbon. To determine the content of organic and inorganic matter COD was measured;this was the parameter for monitoring the kinetics. The leachate was subjected to advanced oxidation treatment by the Fenton reaction, then the adsorption process was conducted by batch, in two consecutive steps, the first step was the use of eggshell and the second step activated carbon. Due to the oxidation treatment the pH value decreased to 2, after the adsorption eggshell the pH increased to 6.9 and this was maintained in the treatment with activated carbon. The kinetics of adsorption of organic and inorganic matter on eggshell was evaluated by models pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order, the better fitting was the latter. The adsorption process was adjusted to the model of Langmuir. The negative value of △Hads indicated that the adsorption process was exothermic, spontaneous and favorable. The separation factor RL of Langmuir Isotherm values indicated that the adsorption of the matter on the eggshell was favorable at different temperatures. Finally, the activated carbon adsorption of liquid obtained from treatment with eggshell was favored with the kinetic model of pseudo second order. With the oxidation process, eggshell adsorption and activated carbon adsorption, the removal COD was 98.6%. The final COD value was fulfilled with the Mexican standard NOM-001-SEMARNAT-1996.

The Lerma River Upper basin is located between Almoloya del Rio shallow lakes and Atlacomulco Municipality in the State of Mexico;is a natural resource essential to human activities in its surroundings and serves as a source of electricity and drinking water for Mexico City. However, this river is threatened by over-exploitation of its aquifers, disappearance of many of its wellsprings and uncontrolled discharges of wastewater from all sorts. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate the water quality in the Upper Lerma River basin using WQI proposed by the NSF and compare these results with those obtained by the National Water Commission of Mexico (CNA). WQI was calculated using seven parameters: dissolved oxygen, pH, DOb5, temperature change, total phosphates, nitrates, and total solids obtained in four different sampling campaigns carried out in 2005, 2006 and 2012. The results showed that water quality in the Upper Lerma River is bad, mainly associated with high levels of bOD5, nitrates and phosphates found. The results obtained with WQI yielded the same diagnosis that the studies carried out by the CNA, in which water quality was unacceptable. It is worth noting that there is a significant water quality deterioration in the Upper Lerma River basin with the course of the years, because in 2012 were observed the lower index values regarding 2005 and 2006, so it is imperative to implement measures to restore and preserve the water quality of this important river.

In this paper review we describe benefits and disadvantages of the established methods of cartilage regeneration that seem to have a better long-term *** illustrated the anatomical aspect of the knee joint cartilage, the current state of cartilage tissue engineering, through mesenchymal stem cells and biomaterials,and in conclusion we provide a short overview on the rehabilitation after articular cartilage repair *** articular cartilage has low capacity to repair itself,and thus even minor injuries may lead to progressive damage and osteoarthritic joint degeneration, result-ing in significant pain and disability. Numerous efforts have been made to develop tissue-engineered grafts or patches to repair focal chondral and osteochondral defects, and to date several researchers aim to implement clinical application of cell-based therapies for cartilage repair. A literature review was conducted on PubM ed, Scopus and Google Scholar using appropriate keywords, examining the current literature on the wellknown tissue engineering methods for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis.
