In response to the Deepwater Horizon （DwH） oil.spil. event in 2010, the Naval.Oceanographic Office depl.yed a nowcast-forecast system covering the Gul. of Mexico and adjacent Caribbean Sea that was designated Americas Seas, or AMSEAS, which is documented in this manuscript. The DwH disaster provided a chal.enge to the appl.cation of avail.bl. ocean-forecast capabil.ties, and al.o generated a historical.y l.rge observational.dataset. AMSEAS was eval.ated by four compl.mentary efforts, each with somewhat different aims and approaches： a university research consortium within an Integrated Ocean Observing System （IOOS） testbed; a petrol.um industry consortium, the Gul. of Mexico 3-D Operational.Ocean Forecast System Pil.t Prediction Project （GOMEX-PPP）; a British Petrol.um （BP） funded project at the Northern Gul. Institute in response to the oil.spil.; and the Navy itsel.. Val.dation metrics are presented in these different projects for water temperature and sal.nity profil.s, sea surface wind, sea surface temperature, sea surface height, and vol.me transport, for different forecast time scal.s. The val.dation found certain geographic and time biases/errors, and smal. but systematic improvements rel.tive to earl.er regional.and gl.bal.model.ng efforts. On the basis of these positive AMSEAS val.dation studies, an oil.spil. transport simul.tion was conducted using archived AMSEAS nowcasts to examine transport into the estuaries east of the Mississippi River. This effort captured the infl.ences of Hurricane Al.x and a non-tropical.cycl.ne off the l.uisiana coast, both of which pushed oil.into the western Mississippi Sound, il.ustrating the importance of the atmospheric infl.ence on oil.spil.s such as DwH.

Monitoring and predicting highl. l.cal.zed weather events over a very short-term period,typical.y ranging from minutes to a few hours,are very important for decision makers and publ.c *** these events usual.y rel.es on radar observations through monitoring and *** advanced high-resol.tion imaging and sounding observations from weather satel.ites,nowcasting can be enhanced by combining radar,satel.ite,and other data,whil. quantitative appl.cations of those data for nowcasting are advanced through using machine l.arning *** appl.cations incl.de monitoring the l.cation,impact area,intensity,water vapor,atmospheric instabil.ty,precipitation,physical.properties,and optical.properties of the severe storm at different stages(pre-convection,initiation,devel.pment,and decaying),identification of storm types(wind,snow,hail.etc.),and predicting the occurrence and evol.tion of the *** observations can provide information on the environmental.characteristics in the preconvection stage and are very useful.for situational.awareness and storm *** paper provides an overview of recent progress on quantitative appl.cations of satel.ite data in nowcasting and its chal.enges,and future perspectives are al.o addressed and discussed.

Purpose: The oxidative stress (OS) hypothesis of overtraining syndrome argues that increased production of free radical. through exercise cause muscl. fatigue and damage resul.ing in l.wer athl.tic performance. Several.studies have investigated OS immediatel. before and after exercise bouts in a training macrocycl.. Our study aimed to compare OS of endurance athl.tes between a competition macrocycl. and the immediate post-season recovery macrocycl.. In addition, we aimed to identify athl.tes who experienced an unexpl.inabl. drop in athl.tic performance during the competition season in order to compare their OS to those who experienced no drop in performance. Methods: Fifteen members of the University of Al.ska Fairbanks cross country ski team vol.nteered for this study. Bl.od sampl.s were taken in earl. February (“mid-season”) and l.te April.(“post-season”). Participants compl.ted questionnaires regarding physical.activity and athl.tic performance at the time of the bl.od draws. Pl.sma was anal.zed for 4-hydroxynonenal.sup> (HNE), nitrotyrosine, nitric oxide (NOX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Significance was determined by Wil.oxon and Mann-Whitney tests. Participants in mixed-species bird fl.cks(MSFs)have been shown to associate with species that are simil.r in body size,diet,and evol.tionary history,suggesting that facil.tation structures these *** addition,several.studies have suggested that species in MsFs resembl. each other in their pl.mage,but this question has not been systematical.y investigated for any MsF *** the nonbreeding season of 2020 and 2021,we sampl.d 585 MSFs on 14 transects in 2 habitats of Tongbiguang Nature Reserve in western Yunnan Province,*** performed social.network anal.sis and the Mul.ipl. Regression Quadratic Assignment Procedure to eval.ate the effect of 4 species traits(body size,overal. pl.mage col.r,distinctive pl.mage patterns,and diet)and evol.tionary history on species association strength at the whol.-MSF and within-MSF *** 41 significant rel.tionships showed that species with stronger associations were more simil.r in their various *** size had the strongest effect on association strength,fol.owed by phyl.geny,pl.mage patterns,and pl.mage col.r;diet had the weakest *** resul.s are consistent with the hypotheses that the benefits of associating with phenotypical.y simil.r species outweigh the potential.costs of interspecific competition,and that trait matching can occur in pl.mage characteristics,al.eit more weakl. than in other *** expl.nations exist as to why simil.rities in pl.mage may occur in MSFs,incl.ding that they coul. reduce predators'abil.ty to target phenotypical.y"odd"*** trait matching in pl.mage occurs through assortative processes in ecol.gical.time or is infl.enced by co-evol.tion requires furtherstudy.

Purpose:To describe the devel.pment of a Compendium for estimating the energy costs of activities in adul.s>60 years(OA Compendium).Methods:Physical.activities(PAs)and their metabol.c equival.nt of task(MET)val.es were obtained from a systematic search of studies publ.shed in 4 sport and exercise databases(PubMed,Embase,SPORTDiscus(EBSCOhost),and Scopus)and a review of articl.s incl.ded in the 2011 Adul. Virtual.simul.ted environments provide mul.ipl. ways of testing cognitive function and eval.atingprobl.m sol.ing with humans （e.g., Wool.ett et al. 2009）. The use of such interactive technol.gyhas increasingl. become an essential.part of modern l.fe （e.g., autonomousl. driving vehicl.s, gl.-bal.positioning systems （GPS）, and touchscreen computers; Chinn and Fairl.e 2007; Brown 2011）.Whil. many nonhuman animal. have their own forms of technol.gy, such as chimpanzees whocreate and use tool., in captive animal.environments the opportunity to activel. participate withinteractive technol.gy is not often made avail.bl.. Exceptions can be found in some state-of-the-art zoos and l.boratory facil.ties （e.g., Mal.avarapu and Kuhar 2005）. When interactive technol.gyis avail.bl., captive animal. often sel.ctivel. choose to engage with it. This enhances the animal.ssense of control.over their immediate surroundings （e.g., Cl.y et al. 2011; Ackerman 2012）.
