Double-sided subduction with contrasting polarities beneath the Pamir-Hindu Kush:Evidence from focal mechanism solutions and stress field inversion

The Pamir-Hindu Kush region at the western end of the Himalayan-Tibet orogen is one of the most active regions on the globe with strong seismicity and deformation and provides a window to evaluate continental collision linked to two intra-continental subduction zones with different *** seismicity and seismic tomography data show a steep northward subducting slab beneath the Hindu Kush and southward subducting slab under the ***,we collect seismic catalogue with 3988 earthquake events to compute seismicity images and waveform data from 926 earthquake events to invert focal mechanism solutions and stress field with a view to characterize the subducting slabs under the Pamir-Hindu Kush *** results define two distinct seismic zones:a steep one beneath the Hindu Kush and a broad one beneath the *** and intermediate-depth earthquakes are mainly distributed in the Hindu Kush region which is controlled by thrust faulting,whereas the Pamir is dominated by strike-slip stress regime with shallow and intermediate-depth *** area where the maximum principal stress axis is vertical in the southern Pamir corresponds to the location of a highconductivity low-velocity region that contributes to the seismogenic processes in this *** interpret the two distinct seismic zones to represent a double-sided subduction system where the Hindu Kush zone represents the northward subduction of the Indian plate,and the Pamir zone shows southward subduction of the Eurasian plate.A transition fault is inferred in the region between the Hindu Kush and the Pamir which regulates the opposing directions of motion of the Indian and Eurasian plates.

Region-specific microRNA signatures in the human epididymis

The epithelium of the human epididymis maintains an appropriate luminal environment for sperm maturation that is essential for male fertility. Regional expression of small noncoding RNAs such as microRNAs contributes to segment-specific gene expression and differentiated functions. MicroRNA profiles were reported in human epididymal tissues but not specifically in the epithelial cells derived from those regions. Here, we reveal miRNA signatures of primary cultures of caput, corpus, and cauda epididymis epithelial cells and of the tissues from which they were derived. We identify 324 epithelial cell-derived microRNAs and 259 tissue-derived microRNAs in the epididymis, some of which displayed regionalized expression patterns in cells and/or tissues. Caput cell-enriched miRNAs included miR-573 and miR-155. Cauda cell-enriched miRNAs included miR-1204 and miR-770. Next, we determined the gene ontology pathways associated with in silico predicted target genes of the differentially expressed miRNAs. The effect of androgen receptor stimulation on miRNA expression was also investigated. These data show novel epithelial cell-derived miRNAs that may regulate the expression of important gene networks that are responsible for the regionalized gene expression and function of the epididymis.

A generalized differential equation compartmental model of infectious disease transmission

For decades,mathematical models of disease transmission have provided researchers and public health officials with critical insights into the progression,control,and prevention of disease *** these models,one of the most fundamental is the SIR differential equation ***,this ubiquitous model has one significant and rarely acknowledged shortcoming:it is unable to account for a disease's true infectious period *** the misspecification of such a biological characteristic is known to significantly affect model behavior,there is a need to develop new modeling approaches that capture such ***,we illustrate an innovative take on compartmental models,derived from their general formulation as systems of nonlinear Volterra integral equations,to capture a broader range of infectious period distributions,yet maintain the desirable formulation as systems of differential *** work illustrates a compartmental model that captures any Erlang distributed duration of infection with only 3 differential equations,instead of the typical inflated model sizes required by traditional differential equation compartmental models,and a compartmental model that captures any mean,standard deviation,skewness,and kurtosis of an infectious period distribution with 4 differential *** significance of our work is that it opens up a new class of easyto-use compartmental models to predict disease outbreaks that do not require a complete overhaul of existing theory,and thus provides a starting point for multiple research avenues of investigation under the contexts of mathematics,public health,and evolutionary biology.

INTRODUCTION Station Pointe Greens,a proposed 219-unit residential and commercial development,promises to be one of the most leading edge Passive House Certified Developments in North ***,an innovative project such as this requires much time and research,and this project being no exception,it is still in its research and design *** story began in 2008 when the City of Edmonton issued a request for proposals from developers regarding improvement of a brownfield site in *** was done as part of the City’s redevelopment initiative for an area which was in dire need of *** Communitas Group saw a huge opportunity to develop a large-scale multi-family project immediately adjacent to a light rail transit and bus *** so the vision of an affordable and sustainable housing project began to take *** had already tested the‘green’construction waters on previous projects,most notably Grandin Green,a 15-storey high-rise which was the first Canadian project to qualify for the Federal CBIP grant(25%more energy efficient than required by the Model National Energy Code for Buildings).However,they had never attempted anything as bold and leading edge as Station Pointe *** goal from the outset was to build one of the greenest multi-family housing cooperative complexes in North *** like most developers,Communitas wanted to build it with as little‘green’premium as *** was,after all,to be affordable housing.

Total hip arthroplasty in developmental dysplasia of the hip: Review of anatomy, techniques and outcomes

Total hip arthroplasty(THA) in developmental dysplasia of the hip(DDH) presents many challenges to the reconstructive surgeon. The complex femoral and acetabular anatomy makes standard reconstruction technically challenging. Acetabular coverage can be improved by medialization of the component or augmentation of the deficient areas with bone graft. Femoral shortening osteotomies are considered in cases of severe dysplasia and frankly dislocated hips. Each patient's unique anatomy dictates what options of reconstruction are available. The functional outcomes of THA in DDH are generally excellent, though higher rates of mechanical failure have been reported in this group. This article reviews the anatomy, classification, technical considerations, and outcomes of THA in patients with DDH.

Time-varying and state-dependent recovery rates in epidemiological models

Differential equation models of infectious disease have undergone many theoretical extensions that are invaluable for the evaluation of disease *** instance,while one traditionally uses a bilinear term to describe the incidence rate of infection,physically more realistic generalizations exist to account for effects such as the saturation of ***,such theoretical extensions of recovery rates in differential equation models have only started to be *** is despite the fact that a constant rate often does not provide a good description of the dynamics of recovery and that the recovery rate is arguably as important as the incidence rate in governing the dynamics of a *** provide a first-principles derivation of state-dependent and time-varying recovery rates in differential equation models of infectious *** this derivation,we demonstrate how to obtain time-varying and state-dependent recovery rates based on the family of Pearson distributions and a power-law distribution,*** recovery rates based on the family of Pearson distributions,we show that uncertainty in skewness,in comparison to other statistical moments,is at least two times more impactful on the sensitivity of predicting an epidemic's *** addition,using recovery rates based on a power-law distribution,we provide a procedure to obtain state-dependent recovery *** such state-dependent rates,we derive a natural connection between recovery rate parameters with the mean and standard deviation of a power-law distribution,illustrating the impact that standard deviation has on the shape of an epidemic wave.

Approaches for predicting low-lying resonances,uniformly treating bound,and resonant levels have been a long-standing goal in nuclear ***,we explored the viability of the complex momentum representation(CMR)approach coupled with new *** focus on predicting the energy of the low-lying 2p_(3∕2)resonance in 17 O,which is critical for s-process nucleosynthesis and missing in previous theoretical *** a Woods-Saxon potential based on the Koning-Delaroche optical model and constrained by the experimental one-neutron separation energy,we successfully predicted the resonant energy of this level for the first *** predictions of the bound levels and 1d_(3∕2)resonance agree well with the measurement ***,we utilize this approach to study the near-threshold resonances that play a role when forming a two-neutron halo in^(29,31)*** found that the CMR-based predictions of the bound-level energies and unbound 1f7∕2 level agree well with the results obtained using the scattering phase shift ***,we successfully found a solution for the 2p_(3∕2)resonance with energy just above the threshold,which is decisive for halo formation.

Safety margin and construction costs are two conflicting goals for a *** providing a fuse in a structure that is triggered at a certain level of over-loading,further increase of loading is prohibited and failure of the structure is changed to a safer *** overloading is controlled and a safer failure mode is enforced,a fused structure requires a smaller safety factor thus leading to more economical construction without compromising *** use of a fuse will also facilitate safer use of advanced construction materials such as fiber-reinforced polymer(FRP)*** this case,a fuse can transfer the sudden and dangerous failure mode associated with brittle FRP debonding or rupture to a safe and ductile failure mode at the fuse *** paper introduces a new type of fused structure as well as an associated design philosophy and approach,in addition to examples of engineering applications.
