Patients with cirrhosis have an increased risk of infection and differently from other complications,that over the years are improving in their outcomes,infections in cirrhotic patients are still a major cause of hospitalization and death(up to 50%in-hospital mortality).Infections by multidrug-resistant organisms(MDRO)have become a major challenge in the management of cirrhotic patients with significant prognostic and cost-related *** one third of cirrhotic patients with bacterial infections is infected with MDR bacteria and their prevalence has increased in recent *** infections have a worse prognosis compared to infections by non-resistant bacteria because they are associated with lower rate of infection *** adequate management of cirrhotic patients with infections caused by MDR bacteria depends on the knowledge of some epidemiological aspects,such as the type of infection(spontaneous bacterial peritonitis,pneumonia,urinary tract infection and spontaneous bacteremia),bacteriological profile of antibiotic resistance at each health care unit and site of infection acquisition(community acquired,healthcare associated or nosocomial).Furthermore,regional variations in the prevalence of MDR infections determine that the choice of empirical antibiotic therapy must be adapted to the local microbiological *** treatment is the most effective measure to treat infections caused by ***,optimizing antibiotic prescribing is critical to effectively treat these *** of risk factors for multidrug resistance is essential to define the best antibiotic treatment strategy in each case and the choice of an effective empirical antibiotic therapy and its early administration is cardinal to reduce *** the other hand,the supply of new agents to treat these infections is very ***,specific protocols that include preventive measures must be implemented in order to limit the negative impact of this sev

Quantitative analysis of trigonelline in some Annona species by proton NMR spectroscopy

A quantitative ^(1)H NMR method(qHNMR)was used to measure the trigonelline content in the leaves of six species of the Annona *** methodology employed compared the intensities of the signals at δ9.14(H-2)andδ0.00,the internal standard TSP-d_(4).This measuring method was able to establish the concentration of trigonelline in the range from 0.67 to 10.04 mg·g^(-1) depending on the investigated extract.

Numerical Simulation of the Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchanger:Influence of the Lower Flows and the Baffles on a Fluid Dynamics

This project proposes the numerical reproduction development of the water flow in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger 2:1 according to the CLASS C TEMA standard (for moderate operation conditions, with commercial application). With baffles in aluminum and copper tube for the cold fluid flow, the shell is in acrylic, and with thermal analysis efficiencies with regard to the presence or not of the baffles, that is to analyze the efficiency with only, the tubes and the shell and soon after the analysis with tubes and baffles. Heat exchangers are widely used equipment on an industrial and commercial scale, the application of these equipments on an industrial scale represents innovative processing solutions reflecting the processes efficiency, producing significant savings and lower cost, supporting the business success, and consequently offering opportunities, social responsibility, which are the pillars of sustainability. For the development of this work the methodology was used to calculate effectiveness, following the design parameters and contour conditions, it was analyzed the fluids behavior in the shell and the tube, through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using the software ANSYS CFX 15.0. The results were compared with Excel generated worksheets calculated using the existing equations and correlations.

Effects of Sky Conditions Measured by the Clearness Index on the Estimation of Solar Radiation Using a Digital Elevation Model

This study evaluated the effects of sky conditions (measured by the clearness index, KT) on the estimation of solar radiation and its components. Solar radiation was calculated by a digital elevation model derived from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). The calculated radiation was parameterized and validated with measured solar radiation from two stations inside the urban perimeter of the city of Cuiabá, Brazil, during 2006 to 2008. The measured solar radiation varied seasonally, with the highest values in december-March and the lowest in June-September. Comparisons between calculated and measured values for two sites in Cuiabá demonstrate that the model is accurate for daily Rg estimates under clear sky conditions based on Root Mean Square Error, Mean Bias Error and Willmott’s index. However, under partially cloudy and cloudy sky conditions the model was not able to provide robust estimates. Spatially, the highest values of incident Rg occurred on strands with North, Northeast and Northwest orientations and were lowest on those oriented to the South, Southeast and Southwest.

Goat whey is an industry-discarded dairy by-product that has interesting nutritional value and a nutrient composition with important functional potential,where proteins have a high biological value and play an important role in the organism’s ***,the aim of this study was to identify,quantify,concentrate and investigate the capacity of goat whey proteins to perform different biological activities and to evaluate their acute *** proteins were quantified and identified by Bradford,Kjehdal and SDS-PAGE *** activity was performed against Listeria monocytogenes,Salmonella spp.,Staphylococcus aureus,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli microorganisms and showed MIC ranging from 15 to 120μg mL-1,with the highest inhibition for *** *** activity was performed against human malignant melanoma cells and their proliferation inhibition was up to 66.8%within 72 h of *** highest antioxidant capacity was obtained at concentration 2 mg that showed 29.69%of inhibition of DPPH radical *** acute toxicity test was performed using Artemia franciscana larvae in which whey proteins were able to preserve larval survival throughout ***,we can conclude that goat’s whey has proteins that can play a positive effect on health,with antimicrobial activity and without *** present study highlights the great potential of goat’s whey to be developed as a safe biopreservative or as a functional ingredient in the food industry.

A Study of the Magnetospheric Micropulsations Pc5 and Pc6 Using Magnetic Stations at Low Latitude Northern Region of Brazil and Ascension Island during Magnetic Stormed Magnetospheric Plasma

In general, micropulsation is generated by the free energy within the magnetosphere, which is mainly caused by the magnetosphere-solar wind interactions and/or magnetic field reconnections in the magnetospheric tail. In this article, we studied the types of low-frequency magnetospheric micropulsations Pc5 and Pc6 (1 - 6 mHz), during three magnetic storms, using ground magnetic observations. One of the main motivations of this study was to produce scientific knowledge on the subject in order to fill knowledge gaps in this region, collaborating with existing bibliographies. The data were recorded in a series of six Brazilian stations close to the Dip Equator (dip = 0), with using data from the Ascension Island observatory. Pulse trains were found to occur simultaneously with almost identical waveforms, with significant amplitude increase near magnetic local noon. Amplitude spectra showed a clear similarity in all equatorial seasons. The results obtained were compared with studies performed in regions with similar low latitudes. The possible mechanisms that induced these micropulsations and the peculiarities presented by these data were also discussed in this article.

Trichomonas vaginalis, a protist parasite of the urogenital tract in humans, is the causative agent of trichomonosis, which in recent years have been associated with the cervical cancer development. In the present study we analyzed the modifications at the junctional complex level of Caco-2 cells after interaction with two isolates of T. vaginalis and the influence of the iron concentration present in the parasite’s culture medium on the interaction effects. Our results show that T. vaginalis adheres to the epithelial cell causing alterations in the junctional complex, such as: (a) a decrease in transepithelial electrical resistance; (b) alteration in the pattern of junctional complex proteins distribution as observed for E-cadherin, occludin and ZO-1; and (c) enlargement of the spaces between epithelial cells. These effects were dependent on (a) the degree of the parasite virulence isolate, (b) the iron concentration in the culture medium, and (c) the expression of adhesin proteins on the parasite surface.

Ecophysiological acclimatization to cyclic water stress in Eucalyptus

Drought is considered the main environmental factor limiting productivity in eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. However, recent studies have reported that exposure to water deficit conditions enables plants to respond to subsequent stresses. Thus, this study investigates the ecophysiological acclimatization of eucalyptus clones submitted to recurrent water deficit cycles. Eucalyptus seedlings were submitted to three recurrent water deficit cycles and anatomical, morphological and physiological changes were analyzed. The results were:(1) Eucalyptus seedlings responded to water deficits by directing carbohydrates to root and stem growth;(2) Size and number of stomata were reduced;(3) Stomatal conductance decreased which allowed the plants to reduce water losses through transpiration,increasing instantaneous water use efficiency;(4) The relationship between gas exchanges and available water contents allowed the seedlings to uptake the retained soil water athigher tensions;and,(5) Physiological recovery from subsequent water deficits became faster. As a result of these changes, the eucalyptus seedlings recovered from the same degree of water stress more rapidly.
