BACKGROUND major depressive disorder(mDD)is a global health issue that affects 350 million people of all *** between 2%and 5.6%of affected individuals are adolescents,research on young patients is *** inflammatory response contributes to the onset of depression,and in adult mDD patients,symptom severity has been linked to chemokine *** To determine the differences in circulatory levels of chemokines in healthy volunteers(HVs)and adolescents with mDD,and assess the changes induced by fluoxetine *** The 22 adolescents with mDD were monitored during the first 8 wk of clinical follow-up and clinical psychiatric evaluation was done using the Hamilton depresión rating scale(HDRS).The serum levels of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(mCP-1),macrophage inflammatory protein(mIP)-1α,mIP-1β,interleukin(IL)-8,interferon gamma-induced protein(IP)-10,and eotaxin were measured in patients and *** In all cases,significant differences were detected in circulating chemokine levels between patients before treatment and HVs(Pmokines decreased at 4 wk,but only mCP-1 and IL-8 significantly differed(Pmokines rose to their initial concentrations by 8 wk vs 0 wk,but only IP-10 did so significantly(Pmpared with 0 *** Despite the consumption of fluoxetine,patients had significantly higher chemokine levels,even after considering the improvement in HDRS *** high levels of eotaxin,IP-10,and IL-8 partially explain certain aspects that are affected in mDD such as cognition,memory,and learning.

Skeletal muscle as a therapeutic target for delaying type 1 diabetic complications

Type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1Dm) is a chronic autoimmune disease targeting the pancreatic beta-cells and rendering the person hypoinsulinemic and hyperglycemic. Despite exogenous insulin therapy, individuals with T1 Dm will invariably develop long-term complications such as blindness, kidney failure and cardiovascular disease. Though often overlooked, skeletal muscle isalso adversely affected in T1 Dm, with both physical and metabolic derangements reported. As the largest metabolic organ in the body, impairments to skeletal muscle health in T1 Dm would impact insulin sensitivity, glucose/lipid disposal and basal metabolic rate and thus affect the ability of persons with T1 Dm to manage their disease. In this review, we discuss the impact of T1 Dm on skeletal muscle health with a particular focus on the proposed mechanisms involved. We then identify and discuss established and potential adjuvant therapies which, in association with insulin therapy, would improve the health of skeletal muscle in those with T1 Dm and thereby improve disease managementultimately delaying the onset and severity of other longterm diabetic complications.

Habitat structure directly affects aggression in convict cichlids Archocentrus nigrofasciatus

Aggressive behavior can be an important factor in determining how animals use and divide space and resources. Previousstudies have shown that aggression in fishes can be influenced by a variety of factors, including water temperature and resourcelevels. In this study, we tested if the amount of habitat structure in the environment affected aggression levels in femaleconvict cichlids Archocentrus nigrofasciatus. We performed a laboratory experiment in which we placed female convict cichlidsinto an aquarium with low or high amounts of habitat structure and monitored the dominant female's behavior toward the subordinatefemale. Aggressive behavior in convict cichlids primarily consists of chases and bites. We found that the total time thedominant female spent chasing the subordinate female was greater when there was a low amount of habitat structure as comparedto when there was a high amount of habitat structure. We also found that both the average duration of a chasing bout and thenumber of bites directed at the subordinate fish increased when there was a low amount of structure, but the number of chases didnot. These results indicate that increased habitat structural complexity decreases aggressive behavior in convict

对艾伯塔省克罗斯菲尔德(Crossfield)走向带西面多套泥盆系克罗斯菲尔德储层开展的岩石学和地球化学研究给出了新的证据,说明回流盐水在早期弥漫性细晶基质白云石(matrix dolomite )的形成及储层孔隙改造方面发挥了作用。埋藏史早期和晚期阶段其他相关的成岩作用包括压实作用、早期基质白云石的重结晶作用以及次生硬石膏、块状方解石、鞍状白云石和热硫酸盐还原作用(TSR )相关成岩矿物的沉淀。来自斯泰特勒组(Stettler)的盐水在密度驱动下回流,致使弥漫性细晶基质白云石发育。其证据如下:(1)白云石化作用发生在固结程度相对较低的沉积地层中,而且在微晶白云石和细晶-中晶基质白云石样品中,原始组构(例如窗孔和球粒)的保存相当明显;(2)基质白云石为细晶-中晶,粒度范围为m^200μm,平均m;(3)基质白云石的组构介于面状-S到非面状之间,而且一般不发光或发非常暗的光。对先存灰岩的交代作用一般都具有拟组构性(mimetic),大多数的原始沉积构造得以保存;(4)近平行网状(anastomosing )缝合线的发育及其随后因基质白云石化作用而愈合的现象说明,沉积地层在发生白云石化作用之前经历了浅埋藏。然而,随后发生的多期次组构破坏性缝合作用以及横切白云石基质组构的溶蚀缝(dissolution seams )的发育都说明,大多数的重大化学压实作用事件都是随着埋深加大而发生,而且是在先存基质发生弥漫性白云石化作用之后。(5 )对于所有的微晶白云石和细晶白云石基质样品而言,白云石的氧同位素(δ^18C)都是介于-6.17‰-4.79‰( VPDB )之间,而碳同位素(δ^13C )均介于0.22‰~1.47‰(VPDB)之间。这些数值都与假定的法门期(Famennian )海水的氧和碳同位素值有重叠,而且都略低于后者,这可能说明它们是从蒸发后的法门期海水中沉淀的。这些同位素值的负偏移现象可能是重结晶作用的结果,这种重结晶作用在后续的埋藏成岩作用过程中影响到了基质白云石。(6)基质白云石的^87Sr/^86Sr比值(0.70805~0.70830 )说明,微晶白云石和细晶白云石是从法门期海水(或略微蒸发后的海水)中沉淀的。原生蒸发盐的87Sr/86Sr比值也接近法门期海水的数值,这进一步说明了微晶白云石和细晶白云石是从法门期海水中沉淀的。中晶和粗晶及基质白云石更偏放射性成因(0.70949~0.71053 ),而且与氧/碳同位素数值结合在一起,可能进一步证实在埋藏过程中重结晶作用使基质白云石发生了成岩蚀变。

参加有组织的体育运动和休闲活动存在发生严重伤病甚至死亡的内在风险。虽然造成体育运动或体育活动中猝死的原因有很多,但运动医学和循证标准治疗方面的进展已使临床医生得以更有效地预防、发现和治疗可能致死的伤患。随着研究与技术不断发展进步,当前的治疗标准正在不断发展以更好地改善患者的治疗效果。本文提出了10个与运动和体育活动中猝死的主要原因及其治疗手段有关的关键问题,未来开展的研究将提高运动员和休闲运动爱好者参与运动的安全度。当前证据表明,如采取正确的预防策略或最佳治疗方案,绝大多数的死亡案例是可以避免的。

Experimental Comparison of Direct and Indirect Haptic Aids in Support of Obstacle Avoidance for Remotely Piloted Vehicles

The sense of telepresence is known to be essential in teleoperation environments, where the operator is physically separated from the vehicle. Usually only a visual feedback is provided, but it has been shown that by extending the visual interface with haptic feedback, that is complementing the visual information through the sense of touch, the teleoperator has a better perception of information from the remote environment and its constraints. This paper focuses on a novel concept of haptic cueing for an airborne obstacle avoidance task; the novel cueing algorithm was designed to appear "natural" to the operator, and to improve the human-machine interface without directly acting on the actual aircraft commands. Two different haptic aiding concepts for obstacle avoidance support are presented: an existing and widely used system, belonging to what we called the Direct Haptic Aid (DHA) approach class, and a novel one based on the Indirect Haptic Aid (IHA) approach class. Tests with human operators show that a net improvement in terms of performance (i. e., the number of collisions) is provided by employing the IHA haptic cue as compared to both the DHA haptic cue and/or the visual cues only. The results clearly show that the IHA philosophy is a valid alternative to the other commonly used approaches, which fall in the DHA category.

Detection of β-Glucuronidase Activity within Actinomadura madurae Grains of Human Actinomycetoma

Actinomycetoma syndrome by Actinomadura (A.) madurae is characterized by a subcutaneous chronic lesion that affects fascia, muscle and bone. A. madurae produces colonies that form grains of less than 1 mm in diameter. Grains are surrounded and infiltrated by neutrophils involved in the grain disruption by enzymes like β-glucuronidase released after the neutrophil degranulation. The aim of this work was to evaluate the polysaccharide degradation of grains treated with β-glucuronidase and to detect the presence and activity of β-glucuronidase within the A. madurae grains. Actinomadura madura grains from patients infected were processed to quantify the total content of polysaccharide with the phenol-sulfuric acid reaction. Grains were treated with β-glucuronidase at different conditions to evaluate the optimal polysaccharide degradation. Grains were analyzed to detect the enzyme by using anti-human β-glucuronidase antibody while enzymatic activity was assessed by evaluating the release of reduced sugars and by in situ enzymatic activity. Optimal degradation of polysaccharide in the grains treated with β-glucuronidase was found with 300 units/ml of enzyme and 24 hr of incubation at 37°C. Presence and activity of β-glucuronidase enzyme within the grains were detected. Results suggested that β-glucuronidase present within A. madurae grain resulted from degranulated neutrophils surrounding and/or infiltrated within the grain.
