Laboratory evaluation of toxicity of selected insecticides against egg and larval stages of cotton pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (saunders) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae)

Background The cryptic nature of pink bollworm Pectinophora gossypiella(saunders)larvae enables its reduced vul-nerability to insecticidal ***,the development of resistance against Bacillus thuringiensis(Bt)toxins posed a serious threat to transgenic cotton *** necessitated determining the critical timing of spray applications on the control *** study assessed the influence of egg age(freshly laid ***-day-old)and the loca-tion of larvae(directly exposed to the insecticide residues on the boll rind *** inside the bolls)on insecticide control *** The results revealed a significant decrease in the ovicidal activity of tested insecticides with an increase in the age of eggs from one day old to three days old(paired t-test,Psed to the insec-ticide residues on the boll rind were more susceptible(>80%mortality)than the larvae exposed after they had bur-rowed inside the bolls(s of tested insecticides on developmental biology were more pronounced in the experiment on pre-larval release insecticide treatment compared with insecticide treatment given post-larval release and entry inside the *** Egg age influences the insecticide susceptibility,as does the larval location,directly exposed vs bur-rowed inside the *** eggs and the larvae that had burrowed inside the green bolls of cotton were relatively less susceptible to the insecticide *** toxic effects of insecticides on egg and larval stages were primar-ily *** findings are significant for devising a comprehensive strategy for pink bollworm management on a sustainable basis.

We present a method to fabricate handcrafted thermoelectric devices on standard office paper *** devices are based on thin films of Ws_(2),Te,and BP(P-type semiconductors)and Tis_(3)and Tis_(2)(N-type semiconductors),deposited by simply rubbing powder of these materials against *** thermoelectric properties of these semiconducting films revealed maximum seebeck coefficients of(+1.32±0.27)mV K^(-1)and(-0.82±0.15)mV K^(-1)for Ws_(2)and Tis_(3),***,Peltier elements were fabricated by interconnecting the P-and N-type films with graphite electrodes.A thermopower value up to 6.11 mV K^(-1)was obtained when the Peltier element were constructed with three *** findings of this work show proof-of-concept devices to illustrate the potential application of semiconducting van der Waals materials in future thermoelectric power generation as well as temperature sensing for low-cost disposable electronic devices.

Provenance and tectonic setting of sandstones of the Lomas Coloradas Formation, Cabullona Group, sonora, México: Constraints on petrography and geochemistry

The sedimentary rocks of the Cabullona Group are well exposed in the Cabullona Basin of northeastern sonora, Mexico, which represent syntectonic sedimentation associated with Laramide-style deformation during the Campanian-early Maastrichtian. The sandstones of the Lomas Coloradas Formation deposited at the upper part of the Cabullona Group. Petrography and geochemical(major, trace, and rare earth elements) studies were carried out on the sandstones to interpret the palaeoweathering, provenance,and tectonic setting of the Lomas Coloradas Formation sandstones. Most of the sandstone modal analysis data plotted in the QFL and Qm FLt ternary diagrams fall into the fields of dissected arcs and recycled orogens,respectively. Geochemically the sandstones are classified as litharenites while few samples plot into the arkosic field. The chondrite-normalized REE diagrams for sandstones have LREE-enriched, relatively flat HREE patterns with negative Eu anomalies. CIA values and the A-CN-K diagram indicate a low intensity of chemical weathering in the source area. The tectonic setting diagram suggests both arc and rift settings for the studied sandstones. The bivariate and ternary diagrams and elemental ratios suggest a felsic source for the Lomas Coloradas Formation. The average REE patterns of the studied sandstones are comparable with REE patterns of the granite from the Caborca block, the rhyolite and granite of the Tarahumara Formation, and the Mesozoic felsic volcanic rocks. The modeled mixture of 40% Proterozoic granite, 30% Triassic arc, 10% jurassic arc, and 20% Laramide arc represents the probable source rocks for the Lomas Coloradas Formation.

The Ti−45Nb(wt.%)alloy properties were investigated in relation to its potential biomedical *** surface modification was utilized to improve its performance in biological *** a result of the laser treatment,(Ti,Nb)O scale was formed and various morphological features appeared on the alloy *** electrochemical behavior of Ti−45Nb alloy in simulated body conditions was evaluated and showed that the alloy was highly resistant to corrosion deterioration regardless of additional laser surface modification ***,the improved corrosion resistance after laser treatment was evident(the corrosion current density of the alloy before laser irradiation was 2.84×10^(−8)A/cm^(2),while that after laser treatment with 5 mj was 0.65×10^(−8)A/cm^(2))and ascribed to the rapid formation of a complex and passivating bi-modal surface oxide *** cytotoxicity and effects of the Ti−45Nb alloy laser surface modification on the MRC-5 cell viability,morphology,and proliferation were also *** Ti−45Nb alloy showed no cytotoxic ***,cells showed improved viability and adherence to the alloy surface after the laser irradiation *** highest average cell viability of 115.37%was attained for the alloy laser-irradiated with 15 *** showed that the laser surface modification can be successfully utilized to significantly improve alloy performance in a biological environment.

Theory and classification of mass extinction causation

Theory regarding the causation of mass extinctions is in need of systematization, which is the focus of this contribution. Every mass extinction has both an ultimate cause, i.e. the trigger that leads to various climato-environmental changes, and one or more proximate cause(s), i.e. the specific climato-environmental changes that result in elevated biotic mortality. With regard to ultimate causes, strong cases can be made that bolide(i.e. meteor) impacts, large igneous province(LIP) eruptions and bioevolutionary events have each triggered one or more of the Phanerozoic Big Five mass extinctions, and that tectono-oceanic changes have triggered some second-order extinction events. Apart from bolide impacts, other astronomical triggers(*** flares, gamma bursts and supernova explosions) remain entirely in the realm of speculation. With regard to proximate mechanisms, most extinctions are related to either carbon-release or carbon-burial processes, the former being associated with climatic warming, ocean acidification, reduced marine productivity and lower carbonate δ13C values, and the latter with climatic cooling, increased marine productivity and higher carbonate δ13C values. Environmental parameters such as marine redox conditions and terrestrial weathering intensity do not show consistent relationships with carbon-cycle *** this context, mass extinction causation can be usefully classified using a matrix of ultimate and proximate factors. Among the Big Five mass extinctions, the end-Cretaceous biocrisis is an example of a bolide-triggered carbon-release event, the end-Permian and end-Triassic biocrises are examples of LIP-triggered carbon-release events, and the Late Ordovician and Late Devonian biocrises are examples of bioevolution-triggered carbon-burial events. With rising demand for clean energy,global focus turns to finding ideal sites for large-scale underground hydrogen storage(UHs)in depleted petroleum reservoirs.A thorough preliminary reservoir evaluation before hydrogen(H_(2))injection is crucial for UHs success and *** criteria for UHs often emphasize economics and chemistry,neglecting key reservoir *** study introduces a comprehensive framework for the reservoir-scale preliminary assessment,specifically tailored for long-term H_(2) storage within depleted gas *** evaluation criteria encompass critical components,including reservoir geometry,petrophysical properties,tectonics,and formation *** illustrate the practical application of this approach,we assess the Barnett shale play reservoir *** assessment unfolds through three key stages:(1)A systematic evaluation of the reservoir's properties against our comprehensive screening criteria determines its suitability for H_(2) storage.(2)Using both homogeneous and multilayered gas reservoir models,we explore the feasibility and efficiency of H_(2) *** phase involves an in-depth examination of reservoir behavior during the injection stage.(3)To enhance understanding of UHs performance,sensitivity analyses investigate the impact of varying reservoir dimensions and injection/production *** findings reveal the following:(a)Despite potential challenges associated with reservoir compaction and aquifer support,the reservoir exhibits substantial promise as an H_(2) storage site.(b)Notably,a pronounced increase in reservoir pressure manifests during the injection stage,particularly in homogeneous reservoirs.(c)Furthermore,optimizing injection-extraction cycle efficiency can be achieved by augmenting reservoir dimensions while maintaining a consistent *** ensure a smooth transition to implementation,further comprehensive investigations are advised,including experimental and numerical studies to address
