Computed tomography-based diagnostics might be insufficient in the determination of pancreatic cancer unresectability

AIM: To inquire into a question of an overestimation of arterial involvement in patients with pancreatic cancer (PC). METHODS: Radiology data were compared with the findings from 51 standard, 58 extended and 17 total pancreaticoduodenectomies; 9 distal resections with celiac artery (CA) excision; and 28 palliations for PC. The survival of 11 patients with controversial computed tomography (CT) and endoscopic ultrasound data with regard to arterial invasion, after R0/R1 procedures (false-positive CT results, Group A), was compared to survival after eight R2 resections (false-negative CT results, Group B) and after 12 bypass procedures for locally advanced cancer (true-positive CT results, Group C).RESULTS: In all of the cases in group A, operative exploration revealed no arterial invasion, which was predicted by CT. The one-year survival in Group A was 88.9%, and the two-year survival was 26.7%, with a median follow-up of 22 mo. One-year survival was not attained in groups B and C, with a significant difference in survival (P a-b = 0.0029, P b-c = 0.003).CONCLUSION: Arterial encasement on CT does not necessarily indicate arterial invasion. Whenever PC is considered unresectable, endoUS should be used. In patients with controversial CT an EUS data for peripan-creatic arteries involvement radical resection might be possible, providing survival benefits as compared to R2-resections or palliative surgery.

Reported here are two cases of a modified Appleby operation for borderline resectable ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreatic body, in one of which a R0 distal resection was attended to by excision, not only of the celiac axis, but also of the common and left hepatic arteries in the presence of arterial anatomic variation Michels, type Ⅷb. The possibility and avenues of the maintenance of the blood supply to the left hepatic lobe after surgical aggression of this kind are demonstrated employing computed tomography (CT) and 3-D CT angiography. Furthermore, both cases highlight all important worrisome aspects of pancreatic cancer resectability prediction.

Incubation time approach in rock fracture dynamics

The paper is summarizing latest results connected with application of the incubation time approach to problems of dynamic fracture of rock materials. Incubation time based fracture criteria for intact media and media with cracks are discussed. Available experimental data on high rate fracture of different rock materials and incubation time based fracture criteria are used in order to evaluate critical parameters of causing fracture in these materials. Previously discovered possibility to optimize (minimize) energy input for fracture is discussed in connection to industrial rock fracture processes. It is shown that optimal value of momentum associated with critical load in order to initialize fracture in rock media does strongly depend on the incubation time and the impact duration. Existence of optimal load shapes minimizing momentum for a single fracturing impact or a sequence of periodic fracturing impacts is demonstrated.

Magnetic susceptibilities of flux-grown single crystals of LitnP4012 （Ln=Nd, Gd, Er） were measured in the temperature range of 2-300 K. The compounds were paramagnetic, and obeyed the Curie-Weiss law in the entire temperature interval, without magnetic phase transitions, and with effective magnetic moments close to those of the corresponding free Ln3＋ ions. X-ray photoelec- tron spectroscopy was applied to determine the positions of core-level electrons relative to the Fermi level： Li is; Ln 4f, 5p, 5s, 4d, 3d; P 2s, 2p; O 1s, 2s. The binding energies in these compounds were found slightly shifted compared to the respective values of the same elements.

The task of trying to quantify a person’s intelligence has been a goal of psychologists for over a *** area of estimating IQ using stylometry has been a developing area of research and the effectiveness of using machine learning in stylometry analysis for the estimation of IQ has been demonstrated in literature whose conclusions suggest that using a large dataset could improve the quality of *** unavailability of large datasets in this area of research has led to very few publications in IQ estimation from written *** this paper,we review studies that have been done in IQ estimation and also that have been done in author profiling using stylometry and we conclude that based on the success of IQ estimation and author profiling with stylometry,a study on IQ estimation from written text using stylometry will yield good results if the right dataset is used.

JAK-STAT pathway in carcinogenesis:Is it relevant to cholangiocarcinoma progression?

The features of JAK-STAT signaling in liver cells are discussed in the current review. The role of this signaling cascade in carcinogenesis is accentuated. The possible involvement of this pathway and alteration of its elements are compared for normal cholangiocytes, cholangiocarcinoma predisposition and development. Prolactin and interleukin-6 are described in detail as the best studied examples. In addition, the non-classical nuclear translocation of cytokine receptors is discussed in terms of its possible implication to cholangiocarcinoma development.
