BACKGROUND The evaluation of periportal fibrosis(PPf)is essential for a prognostic assessment of patients with Schistosomiasis *** WhO Niamey Protocol defines patterns of fibrosis from abdominal ultrasonography,^(1)h-nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)-based metabonomics has been employed to assess liver fibrosis in some *** To build 1h-NMR-based metabonomics models(MM)to discriminate mild from significant periportal PPf and identify differences in the metabolite *** A prospective cross-sectional study was performed on schistosomiasis patients at a University hospital in Northeastern *** evaluated 41 serum samples from 10 patients with mild PPf(C Niamey pattern)and 31 patients with significant PPf(D/E/f Niamey patterns).MM were built using partial least squares-discriminant analysis(PLS-DA)and orthogonal projections to latent structures discriminant analysis(OPLS-DA)*** PLS-DA and OPLS-DA resulted in discrimination between mild and significant PPf groups with R2 and Q2 values of 0.80 and 0.38 and 0.72 and 0.42 for each model,*** OPLS-DA model presented accuracy,sensitivity,and specificity values of 92.7%,90.3%,and 100%to discriminate significant *** metabolites identified as responsible by discrimination were:Nacetylglucosamines,alanine,glycolaldehyde,carbohydrates,and *** MMs discriminated mild from significant PPf patterns in patients with Schistosomiasis mansoni through identification of differences in serum metabolites profiles.

The aim of this study was to characterize the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) in Gir semen before and after cryopreservation. The ejaculate of five sexually mature bulls was used. After collection, one 1-mL aliquot of fresh semen was analyzed immediately, and the rest of the semen was cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen for subsequent analysis. freshly collected semen and thawed cryopreserved semen were centrifuged twice with Tyrode’s albumin lactate pyruvate medium (TALP) to remove plasma and extender, respectively. Samples were then subjected to western blotting, immunocytochemistry, and enzymatic activity techniques. At least one 100 kDa band was observed in every bull analyzed using western blotting with an anti-ACE monoclonal antibody, and band intensity decreased by 70% (p fter cryopreservation. Immunocytochemistry showed periacrosomal ACE localization, and the area stained by the fluorescent antibody significantly decreased (p fter cryopreservation. Enzyme activity was evaluated using fAPGG substrate hydrolysis, which was significantly lower (p han in fresh semen. Therefore, the process of cryopreservation decreases ACE band intensity and enzyme activity in Gir bull semen, and reduces the stained area in immunocytochemistry.

Artemia is deficient in polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUfAs),particularly in arachidonic(ARA,20:4n-6),eicosapentaenoic(EPA,20:5n-3),and docosahexaenoic acid(DhA,22:6n-3).The aim of this study was to determine the optimal time in which the higher contents of PUfAs in juveniles of Artemia franciscana were obtained by the effect of enrichment with the tuna orbital oil *** enrichment periods were evaluated:3,6,9,12,15 and 18 h,in addition to a control treatment(0 h).The most abundant fatty acids in *** were monounsaturated(43.10%±4.35–52.92%±5.82%),followed by saturated(33.83%±1.71–42.33%±2.31%)and PUfAs(8.86%±2.83%–21.32%±2.38%).ARA decreased over the enrichment time;the maximum content was 5.74±0.37%at 3 h,which was not statistically different with respect to the content recorded at 0 *** highest content of EPA was at 3 h(6.47%±1.44%),without significant differences with the content registered at 0 h,while that from 6 h and until 15 h tended to decrease *** 6 h,the content of DhA(8.84%±2.72%)was significantly higher compared to the rest of the treatments,which did not differ among themselves,or with the *** to the 6 h and until 15 h,the content of PUfAs tended to decrease,which could indicate the metabolization of them by ***,coupled with the possible oxidation of these fatty acids in the enrichment solution.

The aim of this study was to characterize the testicular isoform of angio-tensin-converting enzyme (tACE) before and after semen cryopreservation, and in the acrosome reaction of sperm from Nelore bulls in vitro. Ejaculates of 10 sexually mature Nelore bulls were used. After semen was collected, 1.0 mL of the ejaculate was used for the analysis and the rest was subjected to cryopreservation. fresh semen before freezing, and frozen/thawed semen were centrifuged twice and the pellet was resuspended intyrode’s albumin lactate pyruvate (TALP). Thereafter, 100 μL aliquots containing 100 × 106 spermatozoa were prepared. Aliquots of samples were used for western blot analysis, subjected to capacitation, and thereafter, acrosome reaction assays were performed in vitro. With the help of an anti-ACE monoclonal antibody, a 100 kDa protein band was identified in the spermatozoa of Nelore bulls. Cryopreservation reduced the intensity of the protein bands obtained by western blot assay to less than half of that observed prior to freezing (P P he involvement of ACE in these processes. It is concluded that tACE can be found in the spermatozoa of Nelore bulls, and cryopreservation process decreases the intensity of bands of this enzyme;and that the inactivation of tACE reduces the capacity of spermatozoa to undergo the acrosome reaction.

AIM:To investigate the effects of chronic supplementation with l-carnitine (LCT) on hepatic catabolism of l-alanine. METhODS: Two groups of male adult Wistar rats were used: 1) supplemented with LCT (1.2 mmol·kg-1·d-1) dissolved in the drinking water (LCT group) and 2) control group (COG) without LCT supplementation . After one week of LCT supplementation livers from 24 h-fasted rats were perfused in situ and the production of glucose, urea, pyruvate, and l-lactate from l-alanine (5 mmol/L) were measured. RESULTS: LCT decreased the production of glucose and urea from l-alanine. In agreement, pyruvate and l-lactate production from l-alanine were decreased. however, the supplementation with LCT did not show any significant effect on hepatic glucose production from pyruvate (5 mmol/L) and l-lactate (2 mmol/L). CONCLUSION: LCT supplementation decreased the conversion of l-alanine to pyruvate. however the ability of the liver to convert pyruvate to glucose was not affected by LCT treatment.

In view of the current and predictable energy shortage and environmental concerns, the exploitation of renewable energy sources offers great potential to meet increasing energy demands and to decrease depend- ence on fossil fuels. however, introducing these sources will be more attractive provided they operate in conjunction with energy storage systems (ESS). furthermore, effective energy storage management is essential to achieve a balance between power quality, efficiency, costs and environmental constraints. This paper presents a method based on the analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy multi-rules and multi-sets. By exploiting a multiple criteria analysis, the proposed methods evaluate the operation of storage energy systems such as: pumped hydro and compressed air energy storage, h2, flywheel, super-capacitors and lithium-ion storage as well as NaS advanced batteries and VRB flow battery. The main objective of the study is to find the most appropriate ESS consistent with a power quality priority. Several parameters are used for the investigation: efficiency, load management, technical maturity, costs, environmental impact and power quality.

The effect of daily consumption of a yogurt containing Lactobacillus reuteri CRL 1098 on the lipid profile of hypercholesterolemic subjects was evaluated by performing a prospective, randomized, double-blind, cross-over placebo controlled clinical study. Participants consumed daily a yogurt containing L. reuteri CRL 1098 or a placebo for four weeks, separated by a wash-out period. Total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, high-density (hDL) and low-density (LDL) lipoprotein levels were assessed at the beginning and at the end of each period. We found a statistically significant reduction of total (–7.86 g/dl) and LDL (–7.02 g/dl) cholesterol in absolute changes (before-after) as well as a decreasing trend in the group receiving the yogurt containing L. reuteri with respect to the placebo group, without detecting changes in hDL-cholesterol and triacylglycerol levels. Our results suggest that low amounts of yogurt (125 g/day) and low doses of the CRL 1098 strain (106 CfU) are sufficient to reduce total and LDL-cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolemic subjects.
