Evaluation of parasitemia by qPCR in patients with chronic Chagas disease treated with benznidazole

Objective:To evaluate parasitemia by qPCR in patients undergoing etiological treatment and followed in a Brazilian reference ***:Parasite load was quantified by qPCR in 32 participants with chronic Chagas disease who were treated with *** analyses were performed before and after the treatment and parasite loads were compared prior and 12/18 months post the ***:Thirty-two participants were recruited and treated with benznidazole,and 20 were *** events(AE)were observed in 22 out of 29 participants that had safety data(76%),and dermatological alterations were the most frequently observed *** the 20 participants analyzed,13 and 7 completed 12 and 18 months follow-up after the treatment,respectively.12 Months after the final treatment,Trypanosoma cruzi was detectable in 3 patients by qPCR;18 months after the final treatment,Trypanosoma cruzi was detectable per qPCR in 4 of the 7 ***,between 12 and 18 months,7 participants of the 20 initial follow-up cases showed positive qPCR,indicating treatment ***:qPCR can be used as an alternative method for evaluating the effectiveness of the etiological treatment of CD,and can be applied to analyze early therapeutic *** study showed that benznidazole therapy had limited effectiveness in treating chronic CD patients,thus emphasizing the importance of conducting continued research for developing more effective therapies and diagnosis for CD.

The Dog as a Risk Factor in Transmission of Visceral Leishmaniasis: A Review

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a serious public health problem in Brazil and worldwide. Despite the euthanasia of dogs serologically positive, such action has not solved the endemic in Brazil. A risk area for VL involves the presence of the vector, the occurrence of canines and the record of human cases. The factors that have favored the persistence and spread of VL in Brazil are related to the predatory action of man on the environment, to the migratory movements and rural exodus, and a close coexistence of man and animals. Thus considering the epidemiological chain of VL, one fact seems clear: we do not know yet the true extent of the participation of the dog in the infectious cycle of VL. The clinical disease is an important indicator of the extent of the problem in an endemic area. The immunological events are complex and involve resistance and susceptibility to canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). One aspect in CVL is that many symptomatic dogs underwent xenodiagnosis not infect the vector. In such cases the pattern recognition receptors CD11b+, TLR2+, and NO present higher values for dogs with results in immunohistochemistry of skin and xenodiagnosis negative (IMH-/XENO-) than dogs with immunohistochemistry in skin and xenodiagnosis positive (IMH+/XENO+), suggesting that innate immunity modulates the competence of the dog to infect the vector. The organic response in CVL varies from individual to individual and within the same individual, with a strong evidence of being organ-specific. Only 20% of asymptomatic dogs have parasites in the skin and 15% are able to recover from clinical signs and eliminate the parasites spontaneously. In this review, we analyze the epidemiology of visceral leishmaniasis and clinical, immunological and pathological conditions that can contribute to understanding the role of dogs in transmission of visceral leishmaniasis.

Background:The Kato-Katz technique is recommended worldwide for the diagnosis of intestinal schistosomiasis,detecting parasite eggs in feces of infected ***,new tests have been developed in order to facilitate diagnosis,*** detection of specific antigens secreted by schistosomes,such as the circulating cathodic antigen(CCA).The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen test(POC-CCA)compared to the Kato-Katz technique in a low prevalence area in the Amazon Region,located in the municipality of Primavera,State of Para,***:Positivity rates of the POC-CCA test and the Kato-Katz technique were *** sensitivity,specificity,accuracy and kappa coefficient were determined by comparing both *** reference standard was established using 16 Kato-Katz slides,12 of the first fecal sample,two of the second and two of the third *** study also included the concordance between POC-CCA results and different numbers and combinations of Kato-Katz ***:The prevalence of schistosomiasis according to the reference standard or POC-CCA test reached a rate of 9.4%or 23.9%,respectively,among a total of 372 *** positivity rates by the Kato-Katz technique increased from 2.4 to 9.4%,according to the increase in the number of slides examined and fecal samples colleaed.A sensitivity of 55.6%,specificity 76.9%,accuracy 76%and k coefficient of 0.06 was observed by comparing one slide of the first sample and *** 6 slides from three different samples,two slides of each,with POC-CCA resulted in a sensitivity of 583%,specificity 78.4%,accuracy 77%and k coefficient of ***,the comparison of 16 slides from three different samples with POC-CCA revealed a sensitivity of 65.7%,specificity 80.4%,accuracy 79%,and k coefficient of ***:The immunochromatographic test has the potential to be an important tool to combat schistosomiasis because of its practi

This review shows the importance of WO_(3)photoanode as a potentially low-cost,efficient,stable,and photoactive material for light-driven water *** such,this manuscript aims to review the most recent publications regarding the strategies to improve the phoelectroactivity of WO_(3)films for water *** addition,this review aims to graphically highlight and discuss the general trendings of the photocurrent density response and stability test of the recent outstanding studies in the literature for photoelectrochemical water splitting *** strategies covered in this review will not only concern the WO_(3)morphology and crystal plane growth,but also the many arrangements possibilities to improve the WO_(3)efficiency for water photoelectrooxidation,such as defect engineering based on oxygen vacancies,doping,decorations,and homo and *** these strategies are compared by the photocurrent density results and by the stability of these *** best results in this sense were observed in cases where the use of heterojunction was applied together with a desired morphology and crystal plane of the WO_(3)***,the modifications that caused a decrease in the photocurrent density reaching values that are even lower than the pure WO_(3)were also *** this way,this review intends to improve the knowledge about the synthesis and design of WO_(3)photoanodes to further obtain an efficient photocatalyst to minimize the recombination losses or losses across the interfaces and improve the photoelectroactivity for water splitting in the large-scale application.

Fever and Infection Prevalence in Hematology-Oncology Hospitalized Patients: A Single-Center Retrospective Study

Fever is prevalent in hospitalized patients. In hematology-oncology patients, it is related with infection, a disease manifestation or a consequence of immunological dysfunction. This single-center retrospective study aims to determine fever prevalence, describe its causes and evaluate the impact of infection on mortality. We reviewed clinical records of 222 patients admitted to the hospital in three random months of 2015. Around 35% of all hospitalizations were complicated by fever, 42.5% of unknown origin. 90.4% were under treatment. Around 81% did antibiotics, most commonly piperacillin/tazobactam, for around 11 days. 41% changed antibiotics due to fever persistence or microbiological results. The diagnostic yield of microbiological tests was 25%;in 66.7%, a Gram-negative microorganism was isolated. We didn’t find an association between infection and mortality. We conclude that fever is common in our hematology-oncology clinic and that the team is trained to assume infection;empirical treatment is in accordance with international recommendations.

Emergency Care for Children and Adolescents after Sexual Violence, in Brazil’s Capital, Brasilia

Objective: Sexual violence affects women of all ages but, more commonly, children and adolescents. This study aimed to identify the extent to which services are being provided at the hospitals responsible for the emergency care of children and adolescents who have suffered sexual violence and to determine whether there is any difference in the provision of such services as a function of the victim’s age. Method: This cross-sectional study investigated differences in the care received by female children and adolescents who are victims of sexual violence in a capital city, comparing the treatment given to girls under 15 with that given to adolescents of 15 to 19 years of age. The data were extracted from the State Department of Health database between 01/01/2012 and 31/12/2016. Results: Children under 15 were much less likely to receive prophylaxis against HIV, sexually transmitted infections and hepatitis B, with the number of adolescent girls treated adequately corresponding to between twice and almost three times the number of children treated prophylactically. Only 10% of girls under 15 received emergency contraception. Conclusion: The lack of standard care established by the Ministry of Health highlights the need for urgent debates both locally and probably throughout the country, as the situation may be similar in other regions of the country.

Analytical Solutions of the Equations One Mechanical Thermal Model of a Helical Spring NiTi for Use in Heat Engine

Shape memory effect is capability of certain materials to recover its original shape after an apparently permanent deformation. The NiTi alloy of the composition is approximately equiatomic and it is the materials that exhibit the best characteristics for application of these properties, especially in the biomedical area, because of their excellent biocompatibility as： in the manufacture of medical and dental instruments, orthodontic wires, orthopedic materials, guide wires, stents, filters and components to realize the less invasive surgeries. In other areas, they are used for confections of electronic keys, spectacle frames, application in controllers, junction of pipes and electronic connectors among others. New research topics involving the application of these alloys super-elasticity are also known as pseudo elasticity. This event has an isothermal nature and involves the storage of potential energy in the shape memory effect and super-elasticity. In this context, this work falls within the scope of use of the technologies being an example of the work undertaken, in the course Graduate of Federal University of Pernambuco in skills in these technologies. It will present the results of a heat engine which engine element is a helical spring made of a NiTi alloy equiatomic with memory effect reversibly. The spring is triggered by a hot source （- 373.15 K） and a cold source （273.15 K）. The machine is capable of producing a reciprocating oscillating between the two sources. Heat equations and the equations that describe the dynamic behavior of the spring were developed. Through the development of dynamic equations, it can determine the minimum mass for the motion of the machine, as well as the instantaneous and average power and overall efficiency. Post-mortem Microstructural Study of Aluminous Refractory Brick Used in Channels of Blast Furnaces

Aluminous refractory materials with high alumina contents are widely used in the steel industry,and the higher the alumina content,the higher the working *** such as high refractoriness and thermal shock resistance lead these refractory materials to be used as channel linings of blast furnaces,where they are exposed to the attack by slag,molten steel,working cycles and sudden temperature changes between 25℃(room temperature)and 1520℃(the temperature of molten pig iron).In this work,microstructural changes in post-mortem aluminous refractory bricks were investigated by apparent porosity,X-ray diffraction analysis(XRD),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),scanning electron microscopy,and X-ray dispersion energy spectrometry(SEM/EDS).The results showed an increase in the apparent porosity and the bulk density and the presence of the phases mullite,sillimanite,alumina,and quartz in the post-mortem *** and magnesium were not detected in the microstructure of the post-mortem brick,indicating that slags did not corrode these refractory ***,the microstructural changes that occurred in the post-mortem bricks must be due to thermal *** the X-ray diffraction(XRD)test,mullite,sillimanite,quartz,andα-alumina phases were *** results indicate that the aluminous refractory was obtained from *** infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)it was possible to identify the vibration bands referring to the Si-O and Al-O *** increase in the porosity is a result of cracks caused by work cycles at high temperatures and the temperature gradient to which the refractory was subjected during *** the micrograph it was possible to identify the presence of acicular *** absence of magnesium and calcium in the microanalysis results by energy dispersed X-ray spectrometry(EDS)indicates that there was no infiltration by slag or liquid *** results indicate that the microstructural changes that occurred in t

Analysis of 472,688 Severe Cases of COVID-19 in Brazil Showed Lower Mortality in Those Vaccinated against Influenza

Objective: To analyze the severe cases of COVID-19 in Brazil in 2020 and compare those vaccinated and unvaccinated against influenza in invasive ventilation, admission in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and deaths. Method: Cross-sectional study with public data from the OpendataSUS platform, regarding confirmed severe cases for COVID-19 in Brazil in the year 2020. data were analyzed by SPSS, from the chi-square test of independence and binary logistic regression. Results: The population was 472,688 cases and 177,640 deaths, with a lethality of 37.58% in severe cases. The test of independence was highly significant in vaccinated survivors (<0.0001), and regression showed an almost twofold odds ratio for invasive ventilation, ICU admission, and death in unvaccinated cases. Conclusion: We recommend mass influenza vaccination as an adjuvant in combating the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil.

This paper aims to present a new point of view about the active power measurement, for billing purposes, measured at the PCC （point of common coupling） between the utility and the consumer when harmonic distortions are involved. Depending on theorigin of it, the active power can result in higher or lower values in comparison to the fundamental component. The consequences are higher costs for the consumer or losses for the electric utility. Using computational simulations and theoretical analysis, these aspects are evaluated and compared.
