Ecological variables influencing the diversity and distribution of macrolichens colonizing Quercus leucotrichophora in Uttarakhand forest

Ecological variables play a significant role in determining the diversity and distribution of any living organism on earth. Lichens are not exceptional and are quite sensitive in comparison to other organisms; hence the present study focuses on the impact of ecological variables on the diversity and distribution of epiphytic macrolichens colonizing Quercus leucotrichophora across eight different sites(50 m × 50 m) in Thal Ke Dhar forest, Kumaun Himalaya, Uttarakhand, India. For sampling of macrolichens, 200 trees(25 trees from each site) of *** were selected from each site and five quadrats of 5 cm × 10 cm(1000 quadrats in totality) were drawn at the tree trunk. From all the sampled trees, a total of 54 species of epiphytic macrolichens belonging to 18 genera and five families were recorded. Various ecological variables, namely altitude, aspect, slope, diameter at breast height(DBH), and lopping percent(partial cutting of the twigs as disturbance), were also analyzed to investigate their influence on macrolichen species composition and distribution pattern in the study area. For the determination of relationships between these variables, statistical analysis, namely Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, Polynomial regression analysis and Principal Component Analysis(PCA)were performed. Out of all variables, lopping was significantly correlated to species richness of epiphytic macrolichens(0.712~*, p<0.05) and it was confirmed by Pearson's Correlation *** of having high anthropogenic pressure or impact through lopping, the maximum number of macrolichen species was recorded at elevation 2267 meter above sea level(m asl). Global lessons on delivery of primary healthcare services for people with non-communicable diseases:convergent mixed methods

Contribution of epigenetics in diabetic retinopathy

Diabetes has become the epidemic of the 21 st century, and with over 90% patients with diabetes becoming at a risk of developing retinopathy, diabetic retinopathy has emerged as a major public health concern. In spite of cutting edge research in the field, how retina and its vasculature are damaged by the diabetic milieu remains ambiguous. The environmental factors, life style or disease process can also bring in modifications in the DNA, and these epigenetic modifications either silence or activate a gene without altering the DNA sequence. Diabetic environment up- or downregulates a number of genes in the retina, and emerging research has shown that it also facilitates epigenetic modifications. In the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy, the genes associated with important enzymes(e.g., mitochondrial superoxide dismutase, matrix metalloproteinase-9 and thioredoxin interacting protein) and transcriptional factors are epigenetically modified, the enzymes responsible for these epigenetic modifications are either activated or inhibited, and the levels of micro RNAs are altered. With epigenetic modifications taking an important place in diabetic retinopathy, it is now becoming critical to evaluate these modifications, and understand their impact on this slow progressing blinding disease.

Effect of nitrogen doping on structural and optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles

Infl uence of nitrogen doping on structural and optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles has been studied. Undoped and N doped ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized via chemical precipitation approach. The prepared samples were characterized through X-ray diffraction(XRD),Transmission electron microscopy(TEM) equipped with Energy dispersive X-ray(EDAX) spectroscopy, UV–visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy(m RS). Wurtzite phase of undoped as well as 0.5–10% N doped ZnO nanoparticles was con fi rmed through characteristic XRD patterns. The particle size expansion due to N incorporation in ZnO was further revealed by TEM and EDAX analysis where 11 nm size undoped and 18–22 nm size 0.5–10% N doped ZnO(N:ZnO) nanoparticles without any impurity were ascertained. Slight blue-shift in band gap energy, as observed in our case, symbolized weak quantum con fi nement of the prepared nanoparticles. The alterations in vibrational modes of ZnO due to N incorporation, remarkably H substituting at O site and subsequently causing the passivation in N:ZnO nanoparticles, were detected through FTIR analysis. Finally, the effect of the nano-size of crystallite and gradual prominence of N into ZnO lattice due to increase of N doping concentration in prepared nanoparticles was meticulously expatiated though m RS analysis.
