Aims Increasing anthropogenic nitrogen(N)deposition has been claimed to induce changes in species composition and community dynamics.A greenhouse experiment was conducted to examine the effect of increased N availability on growth and functional attributes of seedlings of five tree species with different life history characteristics under varying *** following questions have been addressed:(i)how do the pioneer and non-pioneer species respond in absolute growth and relative growth rate(RGR)to the interaction of light and nitrogen?(ii)how does the interaction between irradiance and nitrogen availability modulate growth attributes(*** attributes)?(iii)is there any variation in growth responses between leguminous and non-leguminous species along the light and nitrogen gradients?Methods Seedlings of five tree species(Acacia catechu,Bridelia retusa,Dalbergia sissoo,Lagerstroemia parviflora and Terminalia arjuna)were subjected to twelve combinations of irradiance and N *** growth traits,including height(HT),basal area(BA),whole plant dry biomass(MD),leaf mass per unit area(LMA),leaf area ratio(LAR),net assimilation rate(NAR),RGR,biomass fractions,root-toshoot ratio(R:S)and leaf nitrogen content,were studied to analyse intra-and inter-specific responses to interacting light and N *** Findings Significant interactions for irradiance and N availability for majority of growth attributes indicates that growth and biomass allocation of seedlings were more responsive to N availability under high ***,species responded differentially to N addition and they did not follow successional *** growers(***,a shade-tolerant species and ***,a light demander)exhibited greater response to N enrichment than the fast growers(***,*** and ***).However,N-mediated increment in growth traits was greater in non-legumes(***,*** and ***)compared with that of legumes(*** and D

High-energy ion treatments of amorphous As40Se60 thin films for optical applications

The treatment of 100 MeV Ag swift-heavy ion(SHI) irradiation with five different fluences(3 1010, 1 1011, 3 1011, 1 1012, and3 1012ions/cm2) was used to design optical and structural properties of amorphous(a-) As40Se60 chalcogenide thin films. Swanepoel method was applied on transmission measurements to determine the changes in optical bandgap, Tauc parameter and linear optical parameters, i.e., linear optical absorption, extinction coefficient and linear refractive index. Dispersion of the material was determined by Wemple–DiDomenico *** in nonlinear optical parameters of third-order optical susceptibility and nonlinear refractive index were determined using semi-empirical relations. Changes in surface morphology of the films were investigated using SEM observation, which indicated that fluence 3 1012ions/cm2was upper threshold limit for these films for ion treatment. It is observed that optical bandgap reduces from 1.76 eV to 1.64 eV, and nonlinear refractive index increases from 1.31 10 10[esu] to 1.74 10 10[esu]. Linear refractive index initially increases from 2.80 to 3.52(for fluence3 1010ions/cm2) and then keeps decreasing. The observed changes in optical properties upon irradiation were explained in terms of structural rearrangements by Raman measurement. The study was compiled with the previous literature to propose SHI as an effective optical engineering technique to achieve desired changes according to the need of optical/photonic applications.

Hydromagnetic thin film flow of Casson fluid in non-Darcy porous medium with Joule dissipation and Navier＇s partial slip

In this paper, the effects of viscous and Ohmic heating and heat genera- tion/absorption on magnetohydrodynamic flow of an electrically conducting Casson thin film fluid over an unsteady horizontal stretching sheet in a non-Darcy porous medium are investigated. The fluid is assumed to slip along the boundary of the sheet. Similar- ity transformation is used to translate the governing partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations. A shooting technique in conjunction with the 4th order Runge-Kutta method is used to solve the transformed equations. Computations are car- ried out for velocity and temperature of the fluid thin film along with local skin friction coefficient and local Nusselt number for a range of values of pertinent flow parameters. It is observed that the Casson parameter has the ability to enhance free surface velocity and film thickness, whereas the Forchheimer parameter, which, is responsible for the inertial drag has an adverse effect on the fluid velocity inside the film. The velocity slip along the boundary tends to decrease the fluid velocity. This investigation has various applications in engineering and in practical problems such as very large scale integration （VLSI） of electronic chips and film coating.

The effect of laser surface texturing on the tribological performance of different Sialon ceramic phases

A tribological performance was carried out on different types of hot press Sialon ceramics regarding the phases, i.e., the α-Sialon phase, the β-Sialon phase, and the α/β-Sialon composite phase. The different phases of Sialon ceramics were analyzed by XRD patterns. For the tribological performance, the Sialon ceramics were laser textured and the starved lubrication method was applied with different dimple pitches under a load of 10 N at room temperature. The material having a dimple pitch of 200 mm shows the lowest coefficient of friction. The α/β-Sialon composite phase shows the least coefficient of friction i.e. 0.04 and 0.1 for the textured and polished(without being textured) samples, respectively. The Sialon ceramics show mild wear and therefore, the wear rate of the steel ball(mating partner) was taken into account for the wear analysis. The α-Sialon phase having a higher hardness shows the least wear in comparison to the α/β-Sialon composite phase and the β-Sialon phase.

Root growth dynamics during recovery of tropical mountain forest in North-east India

Ever increasing pressures on tropical forests worldwide due to anthropogenic disturbances have greatly affected both above-and belowground functioning of these *** fine roots play major ecological roles in forests through assisting in nutrient and water uptake and returning elements to the soil environment,coarse roots play an important role in C *** studied changes in fine and coarse root biomass,production,turnover and carbon and nitrogen return to the soil in two regenerating forest stands(RFs)following stonemining that were 5 years(RF-5)and 15 years(RF-15)post-disturbance compared with a natural forest stand(NF)in Mizoram,North-east ***(<2mm)and coarse root(2-10 mm)biomass differed significantly among the forest stands and ranged from239(RF-5)to 415(NF)and 230(RF-5)to 436(NF)g m 2,*** root(fine+coarse)biomass increased during stand development but the proportion of very fine root(<0.5 mm)to total root production *** root biomass decreased with increasing soil *** and total root biomass showed strong seasonal correlations with soil moisture,more so than for rainfall and temperature,whereas these relationships were less clear for the coarse root *** amount of N(25-55 kg ha-1)and C(1.9-3.6t ha-1)stored in root biomass increased with stand age with a corresponding increase in production and turnover of C and N to the *** to these tropical forests negatively affected root dynamics,influenced their spatiotemporal patterns,and reduced the production,amount and availability of nutrients returned to the soil along with a strong reduction in the root biomass carbon pool and sequestration in carbon residence *** observed that root growth,especially fine roots,is dependent on abiotic variables,and plays a significant role in early stages of secondary succession by adding organic matter and nutrients through high turnover rates in these forests.

Androgen receptor in bladder cancer:A promising therapeutic target

There has been a significant progress in the treatment of metastatic urothelial carcinoma in the last few years with the advent of immunotherapy after a long gap of no drug approvals for over 4 *** immunotherapy with checkpoint inhibitors has revolutionized the treatment of urothelial carcinoma,unfortunately,only a minority of patients respond to *** options for patients who do not respond and/or progress on immunotherapy are very limited and overall prognosis remains dismal in metastatic urothelial *** first targeted therapy targeting the fibroblast growth factor receptor(FGFR)was recently approved for bladder cancer,but it is effective only in select patients harboring the FGFR2 and FGFR 3 *** drug conjugates like enfortumab vedotin have shown promising activity in clinical *** of novel targeted therapies remains an area of investigation and an unmet need in bladder *** of androgen receptor(AR)is a potential strategy for targeted drug development in bladder cancer.A significant proportion of urothelial carcinoma patients express AR irrespective of *** signaling in urothelial carcinoma has been linked to progression through multiple mechanisms,including activation of human epidermal growth factor receptor-2(EGFR or HER-2)signaling and epithelial to mesenchymal transition(EMT).Furthermore,AR is enriched in the luminal papillary mRNA subtype of urothelial carcinoma and also mediates resistance to cisplatin-based *** evidence suggests that AR inhibition can successfully inhibit urothelial carcinoma growth as monotherapy and is synergistic with cisplatin-based *** review the preclinical and clinical evidence supporting the putative role of AR signaling in urothelial carcinoma pathogenesis,progression and its role as a novel therapeutic target and future directions.

Objective In this study,the combined effect of two stressors,namely,electromagnetic fields(EMFs)from mobile phones and fructose consumption,on hypothalamic and hepatic master metabolic regulators of the AMPK/SIRT1-UCP2/FOXO1 pathway were elucidated to delineate the underlying molecular mechanisms of insulin *** Weaned Wistar rats(28 days old)were divided into 4 groups:Normal,Exposure Only(ExpO),Fructose Only(FruO),and Exposure and Fructose(EF).Each group was provided standard laboratory chow ad libitum for 8 ***,the control groups,namely,the Normal and FruO groups,had unrestricted access to drinking water and fructose solution(15%),***,the respective treatment groups,namely,the ExpO and EF groups,received EMF exposure(1,760 MHz,2 h/day x 8 weeks).In early adulthood,mitochondrial function,insulin receptor signaling,and oxidative stress signals in hypothalamic and hepatic tissues were assessed using western blotting and biochemical *** In the hypothalamic tissue of EF,SIRT1,FOXO 1,p-PI3K,p-AKT,ComplexⅢ,UCP2,MnSOD,and catalase expressions and OXPHOS and GSH activities were significantly decreased(P<0.05)compared to the Normal,ExpO,and FruO *** hepatic tissue of EF,the p-AMPKα,SIRT1,FOXO1,IRS1,p-PI3K,ComplexⅠ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ,Ⅳ,Ⅴ,UCP2,and MnSOD expressions and the activity of OXPHOS,SOD,catalase,and GSH were significantly reduced compared to the Normal group(P<0.05).Conclusion The findings suggest that the combination of EMF exposure and fructose consumption during childhood and adolescence in Wistar rats disrupts the closely interlinked and multi-regulated crosstalk of insulin receptor signals,mitochondrial OXPHOS,and the antioxidant defense system in the hypothalamus and liver.

Covered transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic stent-shunt vs large volume paracentesis in patients with cirrhosis: A real-world propensity score-matched study

BACKGROUND Refractory ascites has a 1-year survival rate of 50%.In selected patients,treatment options include liver transplantation(LT)or transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic stent shunt(TIPSS).AIM To assess the outcomes of patients who underwent a TIPSS compared to large volume paracentesis(LVP).METHODS Retrospective study of patients who underwent a covered TIPSS or LVP for refractory or recurrent ascites over 7 *** outcome was transplant-free survival(TFS).Further analysis was done with propensity score matching(PSM).RESULTS There were 150 patients[TIPSS group(n=75),LVP group(n=75)].Seven patients in the TIPSS group underwent LT vs 22 patients in the LVP *** median follow up,20(0.47-179.53)*** the whole cohort,there was no difference in TFS[hazard ratio(HR):0.80,95%confidence interval(CI):0.54-1.21];but lower de novo hepatic encephalopathy with LVP(HR:95%CI:0.20-0.96).These findings were confirmed following PSM *** multivariate analysis albumin and hepatocellular carcinoma at baseline were associated with *** Covered TIPSS results in similar TFS compared to LVP in cirrhotic patients with advanced liver *** transplant assessment should be considered in all potential candidates for *** controlled studies are recommended to select appropriate patients for TIPSS.
