Error induced by the estimation of the corneal power and the effective lens position with a rotationally asymmetric refractive multifocal intraocular lens

AIM : To evaluate the prediction error in intraocular lens(IOL) power calculation for a rotationally asymmetric refractive multifocal IOL and the impact on this error of the optimization of the keratometric estimation of the corneal power and the prediction of the effective lens position(ELp).METHODS: Retrospective study including a total of 25 eyes of 13 patients(age, 50 to 83y) with previous cataract surgery with implantation of the Lentis Mplus LS-312 IOL(Oculentis Gmb H, Germany). In all cases, an adjusted IOL power(p IOLadj) was calculated based on Gaussian optics using a variable keratometric index value(n kadj) for the estimation of the corneal power(p kadj) and on a new value for ELp(ELp adj) obtained by multiple regression *** p IOLadj was compared with the IOL power implanted(p IOLReal) and the value proposed by three conventional formulas(Haigis, Hoffer Q and Holladay Ⅰ).RESULTS: p IOLReal was not significantly different than p IOLadj and Holladay IOL power(p >0.05). In the Bland and Altman analysis, p IOLadj showed lower mean difference(-0.07 D) and limits of agreement(of 1.47 and-1.61 D)when compared to p IOLReal than the IOL power value obtained with the Holladay formula. Furthermore, ELp adj was significantly lower than ELp calculated with other conventional formulas(p pendent on axial length, anterior chamber depth and p kadj. CONCLUSION: Refractive outcomes after cataract surgery with implantation of the multifocal IOL Lentis Mplus LS-312 can be optimized by minimizing thekeratometric error and by estimating ELp using a mathematical expression dependent on anatomical factors.

Interchangeability of corneal curvature and asphericity measurements provided by three different devices

AIM: To evaluate the interchangeability of keratometric and asphericity measurements provided by three measurement systems based on different optical ***: A total of 40 eyes of 40 patients with a mean age of 34.1 y were included. In all cases, a corneal curvature analysis was performed with IOL-Master(IOLM), iDesign 2(ID2), and Sirius systems(SIR). Differences between instruments for flattest(K1) and steepest(K2) keratometric readings, as well as for magnitude and axis of corneal astigmatism were analyzed. Likewise, differences in asphericity(Q) between SIR and ID2 were also evaluated. RESULTS: Mean differences between devices for K1 were 0.20±0.21(pp=0.046) and-0.32±0.36 D(pparisons IOLM-SIR, IOLM-ID2 and SIR-ID2, respectively. The ranges of agreement for these comparisons between instruments were 0.41, 0.70, and 0.70 D. For K2, mean differences were 0.31±0.33(pp=0.265) and-0.39±0.38 D(pp=0.011; 0.55 D, p=0.386; 0.43 D, p=0.05). In contrast, ranges of agreement were clinically relevant for astigmatic axis(26.68o, 33.83o and 18.37o, p≥0.121) and for Q between SIR and ID2(0.16, ppower, astigmatic axis and asphericity measurements provideby the three systems evaluated cannot be considered as interchangeable, whereas measurements of corneal astigmatism obtained with SIR and ID2 can be considered as interchangeable for clinical purposes.

SARS-CoV-2 is the causal agent of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a single-stranded RNA beta-coronavirus that is comprised of a 5′ and 3′-untranslated region (UTR) in its non-coding RNA (ncRNA) region. The p-element-induced wimpy testis (pIWI)-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are ncRNA sequences that bind to transposons and interfere with the translation of new genes. Here, we search for short sequences in the non-coding regions, corresponding to 28 nucleotides (nt). These start from a uracil and have a conserved region of at least 10 nt of homology with the previously reported piRNAs. The aim of this work was to identify piRNA-like sequences in the 3′-UTR of SARS-CoV-2 from the reported Wuhan patient's genome sequence (GenBank: MN908947.3).

Background:COVID-19 vaccines that trigger a strong secretory antibody response in breast milk may achieve effective passive protection of vulnerable newborns and breastfed infants of immunized *** aim of this work was to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 spike RBD-specific IgA and IgG antibodies in breast milk,5 and 9 weeks after vaccination with 3 doses of the protein subunit vaccine Abdala,compared to those found in breast milk from COVID-19-recovered women,collected at least 40 days after the ***:SARS-CoV-2 spike RBD-specific IgA and IgG antibodies were semi-quantified by indirect ELISA,using a homemade standard generated by pooling twenty breast milk samples with high absorbance values according to preliminary *** validity of the standard curves was proved following the European Medicines Agency *** breast milk samples from 2 unvaccinated women who had not been infected with COVID-19 were included as negative *** neutralizing antibodies was assessed by a SARS-CoV-2 surrogate virus neutralization ***:High levels of anti-RBD IgA antibodies were detected in breast milk samples 9 weeks after vaccination and anti-RBD IgG antibodies rise from the fifth to the ninth *** the post-COVID-19 time that was evaluated,the IgG-type response was notably higher compared to both post-vaccination *** antibody titers were similar in breast milk from vaccinated and COVID-19 recovered ***:This is the first report about the immune response in breast milk after the administration of a COVID-19 protein subunit vaccine,which could provide analogous protection to that conferred by SARS-CoV-2 *** implies a potential passive immunity that breastfed infants receive from their mothers vaccinated with Abdala.

Anthropogenic impacts to the sediment budget of São Francisco River navigation channel using SWAT

The São Francisco River Basin,located in eastern Brazil,has undergone a significant amount of anthropogenic changes in the last several decades,such as agricultural expansion,irrigation activities,mining,and the construction of large ***,these changes have altered the historic sediment budget and have led to an aggradation of sediments in the navigation channel,impacting the ability to efficiently ship agricultural commodities to regional *** an effort to aid decision makers in future waterway navigation planning,an international partnership between the Brazilian government agency CODEVASF and the US Army Corps of Engineers(USACE)was *** this partnership a SWAT model of the 630000 km2 São Francisco River basin was developed to better understand both the historic and current sediment budget within the navigation *** SWAT model of the São Francisco River Basin was calibrated for hydrology and sediment *** discharges were calibrated at 17 Agência Nacional deÁguas(ANA)gages,with Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency(NSE)values ranging from 0.42 to 0.75 for an eleven year *** loads were calibrated to an ANA sediment gage located in the Middle São Francisco River Navigation Channel,with a pBIAS(percent Bias)of *** on model results,the aggradation rate of sediment in the São Francisco River and major tributaries has increased by approximately 20 Mt since pre-European settlement of the basin(from approximately 7 Mt/a to 27 Mt/a).This increase has contributed to an impaired navigation channel due to shoaling of sandy sediments in the navigation channel.
