A new configuration of a resonant full-bridge flying capacitor multicell inverter has been designed and constructed with the aim of achieving an extended output voltage frequency range with low harmonic distortion and reduced semiconductor commutation losses. This configuration was tested as a power supply for two different coaxial dielectric barrier discharge reactors, one of them employed for electric characterization and the other one for inorganic compound elimination in an aqueous solution. Two different gas mixtures, 90% Ar-10% 02 and 80% Ar-20% 02, were individually supplied during the experiments; the results showed a high- efficiency removal of meta-cresol （m-cresol） to the order of 98%, which was obtained by adding more oxygen to the plasma gas mixture.

Phenol degradation experimental results are presented in a similar wastewater aqueous solution using a non-thermal plasma reactor in a coaxial dielectric barrier discharge. The novelty of the work is that one of the electrodes of the reactor has the shape of a hollow screw which shows an enhanced efficiency compared with a traditional smooth structure. The experimentation was carried out with gas mixtures of 90% Ar-10% O2, 80% At-20% 02 and 0% Ar-100% 02. After one hour of treatment the removal efficiency was 76%, 92%, and 97%, respectively, assessed with a gas chromatographic mass spectrometry technique. For both reactors used, the ozone concentration was measured. The screw electrode required less energy, for all gas mixtures, than the smooth electrode, to maintain the same ozone concentration. On the other hand, it was also observed that in both electrodes the electrical conductivity of the solution changed slightly from ,-0.0115 S m^-1 up to -0.0430 S m^-1 after one hour of treatment. The advantages of using the hollow screw electrode structure compared with the smooth electrode were：（1） lower typical power consumption, （2） the generation of a uniform plasma throughout the reactor benefiting the phenol degradation, （3） a relatively lower temperature of the aqueous solution during the process, and （4） the plasma generation length is larger.

AIM： To evaluate the surface expression of triggering receptor on myeloid cell 1 （TREM-1）, class Ⅱ major histocompatibility complex molecules （HlA-DR）, and the expression of the splicing variant （svTREH-1） of TREM-1 in septic patients and those subjected to major abdominal surgery. METHODS： Using flow cytometry, we examined the surface expression of TREM-1 and HlA-DR in peripheral blood monocytes from 11 septic patients, 7 elective gastrointestinal surgical patients, and 10 healthy volunteers, svTREM-1 levels were analyzed by RT-PCR. RESUlTS： Basal expression of TREM-1 and HlA- DR in healthy volunteers was 35.91±14.75 MFI and 75.8±18.3%, respectively. In septic patients, TREM-1 expression was 59.9±23.9 MFI and HlA-DR expression was 44.39±20.25%, with a significant difference between healthy and septic groups （P〈0.05） for both molecules. In the surgical patients, TREM-1 and HlA-DR expressions were 56.8±20.85 HFI and 71±13.8% before surgery and 72.65±29.92 MFI and 72.82±22.55% after surgery. TREM-1 expression was significantly different （P = 0.0087） between the samples before and after surgery and svTREM-1 expression was 0.8590± 0.1451 MF1, 0.8820±0.1460 MF1, and 2.210±0.7873 MF1 in the healthy, surgical （after surgery） and septic groups, respectively. There was a significant difference （P = 0.048） in svTREM-1 expression between the healthy and surgical groups and the septic group. CONClUSION： TREM-1 expression is increased during systemic inflammatory conditions such as sepsis and the postoperative phase. Simultaneous low expression of HlA-DR molecules correlates with the severity of illness and increases susceptibility to infection. Additionally, TREM-1 expression is distinctly different in surgical patients at different stages of the inflammatory response before and after surgery. Purinergic P2X receptors are a family of ligand-gated cationic channels activated by extracellular ATP. P2X subunit protein sequences are highly conserved between vertebrate species. However, they can generate a great diversity of coding splicing variants to fulfill several roles in mammalian physiology. Despite intensive research in P2X expression in both central and peripheral nervous system, there is little information about their homology, genomic structure and other key features that can help to develop selective drugs or regulatory strategies of pharmacological value which are lacking today. In order to obtain clues on mammalian P2X diversity, we have performed a bioinformatics analysis of the coding regions and introns of the seven P2X subunits present in human, simian, dog, mouse, rat and zebrafish. Here we report the arrangements of exon and intron sequences, considering its number, size, phase and placement;proposing some ideas about the gain and loss of exons and retention of introns. Taken together, these evidences show traits that can be used to gain insight into the evolutionary history of vertebrate P2X receptors and better understand the diversity of subunits coding the purinergic signaling in mammals.

To evaluate the effect of estrogen therapy (ET) on endothelial nitric oxide (N O) production and in flow-mediated vasodilation (FMV). Randomized, crossover, d ouble-blind, placebo-con-trolled study. Healthy postmenopausal women in an ac ademic research environment. Forty postmenopausal women between 45 and 72 years of age. Women received ET or placebo during two periods of 12 weeks that were se parated by 2 weeks of washout. Flow-mediated vasodilation, nitrite and nitrate, lipid profile, creatinine, and glucose were measured at weeks 12 and 24. Studen t’s t or Wilcoxon tests were used for comparative analyses, and κ.test and lim it analysis determined variability. After placebo treatment, nitrate and nitrite mean concentration was 8.28 ±1.17 mmol/l; it increased to 62.6 ±12.82 mmol/l after ET. Percentage FMV was 18.8 ±2.58 after the placebo period and did not ch ange after ET (20.1 ±1.92) in the whole sample, but in the subgroup (n = 15) of younger women (4550 years of age), percentage FMV increased from 13.6 ±3.6 aft er the placebo period to 22.2 ±3.5 after ET. An increase in plasma concentratio ns of nitrite and nitrate after ET was observed in all the women studied, but th e improvement in FMV was observed only in the younger ones. These age-related d ifferences in FMV in response to ET must be further investigated.

Aim: To compare empathic levels among dental students of five Dental Faculties in Chile. Material and Methods: Empathic orientation of dental students was measured using the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy, the Spanish version for students (S version), validated in Chile and culturally adapted to dental students. The data were compared using analysis of variance trifactorial (model III) and by a discriminant analysis. Results: It was found that differences exist between universities empathic orientation, courses, and gender. Conclusions: The results showed a great variability of empathetic guidance values on the factors studied. Discriminant test confirm the similarity and differences found among faculties from the data matrix provided by the scale used. It is not possible in this investigation to explain the variability found.
