Hierarchical model updating strategy of complex assembled structures with uncorrelated dynamic modes

In structural simulation and design,an accurate computational model directly determines the effectiveness of performance *** establish a high-fidelity dynamic model of a complex assembled structure,a Hierarchical Model Updating Strategy(HMUS)is developed for Finite Element(FE)model updating with regard to uncorrelated *** principle of HMUS is first elaborated by integrating hierarchical modeling concept,model updating technology with proper uncorrelated mode treatment,and parametric *** the developed strategy,the correct correlated mode pairs amongst the uncorrelated modes are identified by an error minimization *** proposed updating technique is validated by the dynamic FE model updating of a simple fixed–fixed *** proposed HMUS is then applied to the FE model updating of an aeroengine stator system(casings)to demonstrate its *** studies reveal that(A)parametric modeling technique is able to build an efficient equivalent model by simplifying complex structure in geometry while ensuring the consistency of mechanical characteristics;(B)the developed model updating technique efficiently processes the uncorrelated modes and precisely identifies correct Correlated Mode Pairs(CMPs)between FE model and experiment;(C)the proposed HMUS is accurate and efficient in the FE model updating of complex assembled structures such as aeroengine casings with large-scale model,complex geometry,high-nonlinearity and numerous parameters;(D)it is appropriate to update a complex structural FE model *** efforts of this study provide an efficient updating strategy for the dynamic model updating of complex assembled structures with experimental test data,which is promising to promote the precision and feasibility of simulation-based design optimization and performance evaluation of complex structures.

The role of the gut microbiota on animal model reproducibility

The gut microbiota is composed of approximately 10^(10)-10^(14) cells, including fungi,bacteria, archaea, protozoa, viruses, and bacteriophages; their genes and their various metabolites were found throughout the gastrointestinal tract. It has co-evolved with each species to assist with day to day bodily functions, such as digestion,metabolism of xenobiotics, development of mucosal immunity and immunomodulation, and protection against invading pathogens. Because of the significant beneficial impact that gut microbiota may have, there is interest in learning more about it and translating these findings into clinical therapies. Results from recent studies characterizing the gut microbiota of various species have demonstrated the range of influences that may affect gut microbiota diversity, including animal strain, obesity, types of enrichment used, bedding and housing methods, treatment with antimicrobials,vendor source, specific animal housing, diet, and intercurrent disease. Relatively little is known about the functional consequences of alterations of the gut microbiota and exactly how changes in richness and diversity of the microbiota translate into changes in health and susceptibility to disease. Furthermore, questions have been raised as to whether germ-free or even ultraclean, barrier-raised mice are relevant models of human disease, given their significantly reduced gut microbiota diversity and complexity compared with conventionally housed mice. In addition, evidence suggests that the specific anatomical location selected for assessing the gut microbiota has a highly significant effect on study outcomes, in that bacterial phyla change significantly along the gastrointestinal tract. This paper will explore animal model reproducibility in light of this information about the gut microbiota.

Persistent occult hepatitis B virus infection:Experimental findings and clinical implications

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a highly pathogenic virus that causes chronic liver diseases in millions of people globally. In addition to a symptomatic, serologically evident infection, occult persistent HBV carriage has been identified since nucleic acid amplification assays of enhanced sensitivity became introduced for detection of hepadnaviral genomes and their replicative intermediates. Current evidence indicates that occult HBV infection is a common and long-term consequence of resolution of acute hepatitis B. This form of residual infection is termed as secondary occult infection (SOI). The data from the woodchuck model of HBV infection indicate that exposure to small amounts of hepadnavirus can also cause primary occult infection (POI) where virus genome, but no serological makers of exposure to virus, are detectable, and the liver may not be involved. However, virus replicates at low levels in the lymphatic system in both these forms. We briefly summarize the current understanding of the nature and characteristics of occult hepadnaviral persistence as well as of its documented and expected pathological consequences.

A new mammalian photoreceptor was recently discovered to reside in the ganglion cell layer of the inner *** intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells(ipRGCs) express a photopigment,melanopsin,that confers upon them the ability to respond to light in the absence of all rod and cone photoreceptor *** relatively few in number,ipRGCs extend their dendrites across large expanses of the retina making them ideally suited to function as irradiance detectors to assess changes in ambient light *** in ipRGCs appears to be mediated by transient receptor potential channels more closely resembling the phototransduction cascade of invertebrate rather than vertebrate *** convey irradiance information centrally via the optic nerve to influence several *** are the primary retinal input to the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus(SCN),a circadian oscillator and biological clock,and this input entrains the SCN to the day/night *** contribute irradiance signals that regulate pupil size and they also provide signals that interface with the autonomic nervous system to regulate rhythmic gene activity in major organs of the *** also provide excitatory drive to dopaminergic amacrine cells in the retina,providing a novel basis for the restructuring of retinal circuits by *** we review the ground-breaking discoveries,current progress and directions for future investigation.

The role of antioxidant micronutrients in the rate of recovery of burn patients: a systematic review

Burn injury can be detrimental to the health of individuals,meanwhile victims lose proteins and micronutrients in wound *** also experience extensive protein *** make them prone to *** patients also suffer a lot of emotional trauma that reduce nutrient *** aim of this paper was to review primary evidence on the effect of antioxidant micronutrients on the recovery rate of burn *** databases such as PubMed,BioMed,and Cochrane were systematically searched between January 1,2014,and January 30,*** include vitamin A,vitamin C,vitamin E,ascorbic acid,zinc,copper,selenium,tocopherol,carotenoids,dietary intake,supplementation,wound healing,infection,recovery rate,and burn *** systematic search was done to retrieve all published data from 1990 to 2013.A total of 518 journal articles were obtained,and after the removal of duplicates,reviews,commentaries,and studies with non-human subjects,11 papers were accepted for *** review considered only papers that were published,and there might be some unpublished data that may have been ***,the wound healing time and infection rates were reduced by the administration of the antioxidant *** review revealed that there was no such published work in developing countries and children were excluded from most *** was also stated clearly that there was no uniformity in burn management;hence,there is a need for more studies on burn management in various populations.

Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis mimicking gallbladder cancer and causing obstructive cholestasis

BACKGROUND: Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis (XGC) is a destructive inflammatory disease of the gallbladder that can mimic gallbladder carcinoma. METHODS: We present the case of a 35-year-old Hispanic male complaining of right upper quadrant pain and jaundice for 2 months prior to admission. He denied a history of fever, nausea/ vomiting, and weight loss. The past medical history was relevant only for diabetes. He had no previous history of jaundice or previous operations. RESULTS: CA19-9 was slightly elevated (52 U/mL). Abdominal ultrasonography showed an irregular thickening of the gallbladder wall and no gallstones were detected. CT scan also revealed an irregular thickening of the wall of the gallbladder body suggestive of malignancy. At laparotomy, the mass was adherent to the duodenum and colon, and although the frozen section biopsy was negative, the intraoperative findings were suggestive of malignancy, and the patient underwent left liver trisegmentectomy, resection of the common bile duct and Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy. Pathological examination unexpectedly revealed XGC without malignancy. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative and intraoperative differential diagnosis of XGC from gallbladder carcinoma remains a challenge when it is associated with inflammatory involvement of surrounding tissues. Since gallbladder carcinoma and XGC may coexist, radical resection is justified when malignancy cannot be completely ruled out.

Parametric study of spark plasma sintering of Al_(20)Cr_(20)Fe_(25)Ni_(25)Mn_(10) high entropy alloy with improved microhardness and corrosion

Multicomponent Al_(20)Cr_(20)Fe_(25)Ni_(25)Mn_(10) alloys were synthesized using spark plasma sintering at different temperatures(800,900,and 1000℃)and holding times(4,8,and 12 min)to develop a high entropy alloy(HEA).The characteristics of spark plasma-synthesized(SPSed)alloys were experimentally explored through investigation of microstructures,microhardness,and corrosion using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS),Vickers microhardness tester,and potentiodynamic polarization,*** diffraction(XRD)characterization was employed to identify the phases formed on the developed *** EDS results revealed that the alloys consisted of elements selected in this work irrespective of varying sintering *** XRD,EDS,and scanning electron microscopy collectively provided evidence that the fabricated alloys were characterized by globular microstructures exhibiting face-centered cubic phase,which was formed on a basis of solid solution *** finding implies that the SPSed alloy showed the features of *** alloy produced at 1000℃ and holding time of 12 min portrayed an optimal microhardness of HV 447.97,but the value decreased to HV 329.47 after heat *** same alloy showed an outstanding corrosion resistance *** increase in temperature resulted in an Al_(20)Cr_(20)Fe_(25)Ni_(25)Mn_(10) alloy with superior density,microhardness,and corrosion resistance over the other alloys developed at different parameters.
