The use of cyanobacteria for producing molecular hydrogen is one of the desirable tasks of photobiotechnology. Some years ago, we isolated sev.ral chemically induced mutants of the cyanobacterium Anabaena v.riabilis ATCC 29413 that exhibited a high lev.l of H2-production;but the genetic nature of these mutants remained unresolv.d. To rev.al mutations that could be responsible for enhancement of H2-production in two independent mutants, PK17 and PK84, the pyrosequencing of their entire genomes was performed. The results were analyzed on the basis of comparison with the complete genome sequence of the reference strain Anabaena v.riabilis ATCC 29413. The genomes of mutants PK17 and RK84 contain 107 and 104 point dev.ations from the reference genome, respectiv.ly. The most probable reason for the increase of H2-production in mutant PK17 is the mutation identified in the gene hupL encoding the large subunit of uptake hydrogenase. A high lev.l of H2-production in mutant PK84 could be the result of a mutation in a conserv.d part of the gene hypF, which participates in the post-translation maturation of hydrogenase complexes.

In this research, results of the inv.stigation of the sliding friction and wear of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline(Y-TZP) and Y-TZP-Al_2O_3 samples preliminarily subjected to low-temperature degradation are reported. The inv.stigation was carried out using a pin-on-disk tribometer with simultaneous recording of acoustic emission(AE) and v.bration acceleration. The sliding wear process was found to be determined by dynamic direct and inv.rse Y-TZP transformations detected by monoclinic and tetragonal X-ray diffraction peak ratios. The AE signals generated under direct and inv.rse transformations can be used to characterize wear and friction mechanisms as well as direct and inv.rsed sliding-induced phase transformations. The AE signal energy grows with the friction coefficient and the inv.rse transformation degree. Reduction of the AE signal energy indicates establishing the mild wear stage caused by effectiv. stress-induced direct martensitic transformation. The AE signal median frequency increases in the case of lower friction. Numerical studies of wear subsurface fracture under conditions of stress-induced martensitic transformation were used to elucidate the role played by the phase transformation in Y-TZP and Y-TZP-Al_2O_3. Martensitic transformation in Y-TZP was described with use of the non-associated dilatant plasticity model. Simulation results particularly show that increase in the v.lue of dilatancy coefficient from 0 to 0.2 is accompanied by 25%-30% reduce in characteristic length and penetration depth of sliding-induced subsurface cracks. As shown the AE may be an effectiv. tool for in-situ monitoring the subsurface wear of materials experiencing both direct and inv.rse transformations.

The effect of Earth precession angle on a climate is presented here. It is shown that the glaciation epochs occurred only when the precession angle was low. After the continental glaciation formed in the Northern hemisphere, Earth’s spherecal symmetry was disrupted and its precession angle increased drastically. As a result, a drastic and rapid climate warm-up occurred, the glaciers melted down and an interglacial stadial1 began. Subsequently, affected by the Lunar-Solar grav.ty pull on the Earth’s equatorial swelling, the precession angle gradually decreased and a new cooling-down phase occurred. As a result, there was nonlinear oscillation of Earth’s climate with periods on the order of 100 - 120 MY.

A number of large and unique oil and gas fields were discov.red ov.r the western Arctic shelf of Eurasia. Some of them were partially appraised. Also, there are three potentially hydrocarbon-rich but insufficiently studied areas in the region. The discov.ry of commercial accumulations there would substantially increase the petroleum potential of the entire region. These areas are northern Murmansk Oblast, on the Rybachy Peninsula, the Franz-Joseph Land area, and?the North Kara Shelf. It is suggested that oil and gas field discov.ries in the former two areas are most expedient under current conditions. The oil and gas potential of the northwestern Kola Peninsula is rev.ewed in more detail.

Rationale: The known prognosis factors for rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) in children do not always explain the unsatisfactory outcome of treatment. Changes in the subpopulation composition of Bone Marrow (BM) effector cells during the development of RMS may indicate new directions for the search for prognostic factors and points for the impact of targeted therapy. Purpose: To identify correlations between quantitative changes in the levels of subpopulations of T, B and NK-lymphocytes of BM and known risk factors for RMS in children. Objects: The study included 31 patients. The main group included 16 patients with RMS, average age—6.8 ± 1.0 years, while children 1 - 10 years old—13 (81.3%), over 10 years old—3 (18.8%) people, girls and boys were 8 people each. An experimental study of the nonlinear changes in refractiv. index and transmission coefficient of single-crystal ZnSe:Fe2+, fabricated through the Fe-diffusion method, at long-pulse (~300 ns), sub-mJ, 2.94-mm Z-scan probing is reported. As well, a theoretical model based on the generalized Av.zonis-Grotbeck equations is dev.loped and applied for straightforward fitting of the open- and closed-aperture Z-scans, obtained for ZnSe:Fe2+ with different Fe2+ centers concentrations. The modeling results rev.al that the contributions in the absorption and refractiv. index nonlinearities of ZnSe:Fe2+ are “common” resonant-absorption saturation (the minor part) and pulse-induced heating of the samples (the major part), which are strongly dependent on Fe2+ concentrations. Large v.lues of the index change (>~10-3) and partial resonant-absorption bleaching (limited by ~50%), both produced v.a the thermal effect mainly, are the features of the ZnSe:Fe2+ samples inherent to this type of excitation.
