Investigation of Scattered Radiation Dose at the Door of a Radiotherapy Vault When the Maze Intersects the Primary Beam

NCRP 151 provides very detailed examples demonstrating the necessary concerns for shielding a conventional radiotherapy vault with a maze where the useful beam is parallel to the maze. However, it provides little guidance on how to properly shield a vault with the maze-wall acting as part of a compound primary barrier. We have modeled a new radiotherapy vault with this configuration and assessed the additional photon shielding burden at the door with MCNP5. MCNP simulations demonstrated an increase in overall photon shielding burden at the door relative to calculations that only consider photon workloads presented in NCRP 151. Two additional components of scattered radiation are considered and methods for calculation are presented.

XRF Standardless Comparison of Mining Head and Tail Grades to Screen and Display Ore Processing Recoveries

Separation of target elements or minerals from their host rock or ore is essential to successful mining operation. The inevitable loss of a portion of the desired material that accompanies each step in the extraction process must be documented to develop the operational protocol. Superposition of the characteristic X-ray fluorescence spectra of head (crushed rock ore particles, pre-processing) and tail (post-processing particles) samples provides a direct visual comparison of relative peak sizes, and thereby the relative concentrations, of elements of interest. If the head and tail peaks are identical, none of the element was recovered in the extraction process. At the other extreme if the tail peak “flat lines”, i.e., there is no peak, there was 100% recovery of that element. Standardless visual comparison is valid if the same mass of identical starting material is incorporated into the head and tail sample analysis pucks, and XRF analytical conditions are identical. The considerable time and expense of acquiring and calibrating the standards associated with XRF analysis of 75 or more elements are avoided, a significant advantage during initial broad screening of an experimental extraction procedure. Full quantitation by XRF or an alternate technique can proceed at a later project stage, if desired. The approach retains and presents all features of the original data, thus eliminating questions about data quality, standards and their calibration, and data manipulation in processing from raw counts to concentrations in printout tables. This form of display is ideal for both the mining professional and such less technical groups as corporate staff, investors, regulators, and the public. examples presented herein are for heap leaching;the protocol can be applied as well to any of the other traditional ore processing and beneficiation procedures, e.g., gravity concentration, magnetic and electrical separation, froth flotation, and ore sorting.

The aqueous phase in traditional microfluidics is usually confined by solid walls;flows through such systems are often predicted *** solid walls limit access,open systems are being developed in which the aqueous phase is partly bounded by fluid walls(interfaces with air or immiscible liquids).Such fluid walls morph during flow due to pressure gradients,so predicting flow fields remains *** recently developed a version of open microfluidics suitable for live-cell biology in which the aqueous phase is confined by an interface with an immiscible and bioinert fluorocarbon(FC40).Here,we find that common medium additives(fetal bovine serum,serum replacement)induce elastic no-slip boundaries at this interface and develop a semi-analytical model to predict flow *** experimentally validate the model’s accuracy for single conduits and fractal vascular trees and demonstrate how flow fields and shear stresses can be controlled to suit individual applications in cell biology.

Leg extension Strength, explosive Strength, Muscle Activation, and Growth as Predictors of Vertical Jump Performance in Youth Athletes

Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among leg extension strength,explosive strength,muscle activation,and measurements of growth to predictions of vertical jump performance in youth *** Height,body mass,skinfolds,and quadriceps femoris muscle cross-sectional area were measured in 39 sports active children(20 females,19 males,age=12.52±0.62 years old).Peak torque(PT),rate of torque development(RTD),rate of velocity development(RVD),and rate of electromyographic amplitude rise(ReR)were measured during isometric and isokinetic leg ***,RTD,and RVD were expressed in absolute terms and normalized to body *** jump height(JH)and peak power(PP)were assessed during static(SJ),counter-movement(CMJ),and drop(DJ)*** JH exhibited greater correlations with PT normalized to body mass(r=0.387-0.758)than absolute PT(r=0.338-0.417),whereas PP exhibited greater correlations with absolute PT(r=0.368-0.837).Only negligible to moderate relation-ships existed between JH and PP across all jumps(r=0.053-0.605).Over 50%of the variability in PP was predicted in 24 of 30 regression models with absolute muscle strength,muscle activation,and measurements of growth,while only 6 of 30 models predicted more than 50%of the variability in *** Overall,absolute static and dynamic muscle strength,muscle activation,and growth better explained PP meas-ured during vertical jumps than estimated JH.

Impact of pre- and peri-operative risk factors on length of stay and hospital readmission following minimally-invasive partial nephrectomy

Determining the earliest growth stage to detect the presence of endophytes in tall fescue and perennial ryegrass seedlings using molecular markers

Identifying the occurrence time of an impending major earthquake:a review

The procedure through which the occurrence time of an impending major earthquake can be determined is reviewed in the light of the recent advances. This can be achieved by analyzing in natural time the seismicity in the candidate area. To apply this general procedure, we need two important elements： first, to know when we should start the analysis, i.e., set the natural time equal to zero. This is the time at which the system enters the critical stage. Second a reliable estimation of the candidate epicentral area. If geoelectrical measurements are taken and the VAN method （after the initials of the three researchers Varotsos, Alexopoulos and Nomicos）is applied, both these elements become available upon the recording of a precursory Seismic electric Signals （SeS） activity, because its initiation marks the time when the system enters the critical stage, and in addition the SeS data enable the determination of the epicentral area of the impending mainshock. On the other hand, if geoelectrical data are lacking, we make use of the following two recent findings by means of natural time analysis： First, the fluctuations of the order parameter of seismicity in a large area exhibit a minimum a few months before a major earthquake almost simultaneously with the initiation of an SeS activity. Second, a spatiotemporal study of this minimum unveils an estimate of the epicentral area of the impending major earthquake. Two examples are given that refer to the strongest earthquakes that occurred in Greece and Japan during the last 3 decades, i.e., the Mw6.9 earthquake in southwestern Greece on 14 February 2008 and the Mw9.0 Tohoku earthquake in Japan on 11 March 2011.
