The "five senses of success" in nursing students: Assessing first-year support engagement

Refractive outcomes among glaucoma patients undergoing phacoemulsification cataract extraction with and without Kahook Dual Blade goniotomy

Background:Glaucoma patients undergoing phacoemulsification alone have a higher rate of refractive surprise compared to patients without *** risk is further increased with combined filtering ***,there are few and conflicting reports on the effect of combined phacoemulsification and micro-invasive glaucoma surgery(MIGS).Here,we look at refractive outcomes of glaucoma patients undergoing phacoemulsification with and without Kahook Dual Blade(KDB)***:Retrospective chart review of 385 glaucomatous eyes of 281 patients,which underwent either phacoemulsification alone(n=309)or phacoemulsification with KDB goniotomy(n=76,phaco-KDB)at the University of *** main outcome was refractive surprise defined as the difference in target and postoperative refraction spherical equivalent greater than±0.5 Diopter(D).Results:Refractive surprise greater than±0.5 D occurred in 26.3%of eyes in the phaco-KDB group and 36.2%in the phacoemulsification group(p=0.11).Refractive surprise greater than±1.0 D occurred in 6.6%for the phacoKDB group and 9.7%for the phacoemulsification group(p=0.08).There was no significant difference in risk of refractive surprise when pre-operative IOP,axial length,keratometry or performance of KDB goniotomy were assessed in univariate ***:There was no difference between refractive outcomes of glaucomatous patients undergoing phacoemulsification with or without KDB goniotomy.

关于物体重量认知的研究是探讨儿童整个认知发展的重要途径之一。本文通过两个实验考察了美国和中国儿童利用语言标签基于重量进行归纳推理的发展特点及跨文化一致性。实验人员利用语言标签提示三个外部知觉特征完全相似物体中的一个物体,随后要求儿童从剩余两个物体中选择一个他们认为和目标物体共享语言标签的物体。研究考察儿童是否能够基于物体的内在属性重量进行类别判断。结果显示:(1) 4岁和5岁儿童以重量进行归纳推理显著高于3岁儿童, 4岁和5岁儿童之间的差异不显著;(2)美国和中国4岁和5岁儿童的表现均显著高于随机水平, 3岁儿童与随机水平没有显著差异;(3)美国2岁儿童的表现边缘低于随机水平, 6岁儿童显著高于随机水平。总之,儿童利用语言标签进行基于重量的归纳推理随年龄增长而发展;美国和中国儿童在发展特点及年龄转折上具有跨文化一致性, 4岁儿童具备了利用语言标签进行基于物体内在属性归纳推理的能力。

It is known that raw-mixed vegetable salads are essential part of people＇s diet all around the world. These vegetables salads are consumed raw and often without heat treatment or thorough washing. Raw-mixed vegetable salads therefore can serve as vehicle for the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms associated with human diseases. The aim of this study was to isolate and analyze the common bacterial pathogens associated with raw-mixed vegetable salads prepared and sold by street food vendors in Korle-Gonno, Accra, Metropolis, Ghana. A total of 75 different raw-mixed vegetable salads were sampled from the open places and were subjected to bacteriological analysis using standard Food and Agriculture Organization （FAO） of the United nations （Un） total aerobic plate count method. A total mean colony count of bacteria ranged 0.87-5.6 log10 CFU/g was isolated. Escherichia coli （35%）, Staphylococcus aureus （33%）, Klebsiella sp. （17%）, and Bacillus sp. （15%） were the bacteria isolated from the various raw-mixed vegetables salads investigated. This study has shown that all the raw-mixed vegetable salads sampled from Korle-Gonno, Accra Metropolis, Ghana had a high bacterial contamination and their persistence and proliferation is a reflection of poor hygienic practices by the street food vendors. The use of unsafe or contaminated water to irrigate the vegetables when growing on the farm or garden could also be a contributing factor.

Timing of chemotherapy and survival in patients with resectable gastric adenocarcinoma

AIM: To evaluate the timing of chemotherapy in gastric cancer by comparing survival outcomes in treatment groups. METHODS: Patients with surgically resected gastric adenocarcinoma from 1988 to 2006 were identified from the Los Angeles County Cancer Surveillance Program. To evaluate the population most likely to receive and/or benefit from adjunct chemotherapy, inclusion criteria consisted of Stage Ⅱ or Ⅲ gastric cancer patients > 18 years of age who underwent curative-intentsurgical resection. Patients were categorized into three groups according to the receipt of chemotherapy:(1) no chemotherapy;(2) preoperative chemotherapy; or(3) postoperative chemotherapy. Clinical and pathologic characteristics were compared across the different treatment ***: Of 1518 patients with surgically resected gastric cancer, 327(21.5%) received perioperative chemotherapy. The majority of these 327 patients were male(68%) with a mean age of 61.5 years; and they were significantly younger than non-chemotherapy patients(mean age, 70.7; P nts had tumors frequently located in the distal stomach(34.5%). Preoperative chemotherapy was administered to 11.3% of patients(n = 37) and postoperative therapy to 88.7% of patients(n = 290). An overall survival benefit according to timing of chemotherapy was not observed on univariate or multivariate analysis. Similar results were observed with stagespecific survival analyses(5-year overall survival: Stage Ⅱ, 25% vs 30%, respectively; Stage Ⅲ, 14% vs 11%, respectively). Therefore, our results do not identify a survival advantage for specific timing of chemotherapy in locally advanced gastric cancer. COnCLUSIOn: This study supports the implementation of a randomized trial comparing the timing of perioperative therapy in patients with locally advanced gastric cancer.

Renal biopsy is an invasive procedure used to evaluate the activity and the therapeutic management of kidney disease and kidney transplantation. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological, clinical, and pathological features of kidney disease diagnosed by biopsy in the Ivory Coast. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive and prospective study conducted between January 2015 and December 2018 in the Department of Anatomy and Cytology of the Pathology of Cocody (Abidjan) and Bouake. Specimens were obtained from the nephrology department of Ivory Coast and from teaching hospitals in Togo, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Mali. Samples were analyzed according to standard renal biopsy procedures. One kidney fragment was fixed in acetic acid formalin (AAF) for optical microscopy examination. The other fragment, soaked in physiological water, was immediately sent for immunofluorescence examination. All renal pathologies were included in this study. The study parameters were frequency, age, sex, origin, occupation, clinical and biological signs, and pathological aspects with optical microscopy, and immunofluorescence. Results: 153 cases (2.23%) of kidney biopsies were examined on a total of 10,573 specimens. Ivory Coast specimens accounted for 91.5% of cases (n = 140). nephrotic syndrome (49%) was the most common clinical sign and indication for renal biopsy, followed by acute renal failure (16.3%), chronic renal failure (19.6%), and a combination of chronic renal failure with hypertension (11.18%) and glomerulonephritis (4%). Mean proteinuria was 3.03 g/24h (range, 0.14 to 11.5 g/24h). Histologically, 90.8% (n = 139) were glomerular nephropathies, including 26.6% HIV-associated nephropathy, 17.3% focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, 13.6% nephroangiosclerosis, 11.5% post-infectious glomerulonephritis, 9.3% membranous glomerulonephritis, and 21.6% miscellaneous glomerular nephropathies (n = 30). Background:Large numbers of post-deployment *** are diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD)and/or traumatic brain injury(TBI),leading to an urgent need for effective interventions to reduce symptoms and increase veterans’*** includes anxiety,flashbacks,and emotional *** symptoms increase health care costs for stress-related illnesses and can make veterans’civilian life ***:We used a randomized wait-list controlled design with repeated measures of *** veterans to address our specific aim to test the efficacy of a 6-week therapeutic horseback riding(THR)program for decreasing PTSD symptoms and increasing coping self-efficacy,emotion regulation,social and emotional *** participants were recruited and 29 enrolled in the randomized *** were randomly assigned to either the horse riding group(n=15)or a wait-list control group(n=14).The wait-list control group experienced a 6-week waiting period,while the horse riding group began *** wait-list control group began riding after 6 weeks of participating in the control *** and health history information was obtained from all the *** symptoms were measured using the standardized PTSD Checklist-Military Version(PCL-M).The PCL-M as well as other instruments including,The Coping Self Efficacy Scale(CSES),The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale(DERS)and The Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults-short version(SELSA)were used to access different aspects of individual well-being and the PTSD ***:Participants had a statistically significant decrease in PTSD scores after 3 weeks of THR(P≤0.01)as well as a statistically and clinically significant decrease after 6 weeks of THR(P≤0.01).Logistic regression showed that participants had a 66.7%likelihood of having lower PTSD scores at 3 weeks and 87.5%likelihood at 6 *** the generalized linear model(GLM),our AnOVA findings for the coping self
