Studies on morbid obesity have shown remarkable improvement of diabetes in patients who have undergone bariatric *** was subsequently shown that these operations induce diabetes remission independent of the resultant weight loss;as a result,surgeons began to investigate whether operations for gastric cancer(GC)could have the same beneficial effect on diabetes as bariatric *** was then shown in multiple reports that followed that certain operations for GC were able to improve or even cure type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2 DM)in GC *** finding gave rise to the concept of"oncometabolic surgery",in which a patient diagnosed with both GC and T2 DM undergo a single operation with the purpose of treating both *** the increasing incidence of T2 DM,oncometabolic surgery has the potential to improve the quality of life and even extend survival of many GC ***,because the GC patient population and the bariatric patient population are wildly different and because different GC operations have different properties,the effect of oncometabolic surgery must be carefully assessed and engineered in order to maximize benefit and avoid *** manuscript aims to summarize the findings made so far in the field of oncometabolic surgery and to provide an outlook regarding the possibility of oncometabolic surgery being incorporated into standard clinical practice.

Etching characteristics and surface modification of InGaSnO thin films under Cl_(2)/Ar plasma

Low-intensity treadmill exercise and/or bright light promote neurogenesis in adult rat brain

The hippocampus is a brain region responsible for learning and memory functions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of low-intensity exercise and bright light exposure on neurogenesis and brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression in adult rat hippocampus. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to control, exercise, light, or exercise ＋ light groups （n = 9 per group）. The rats in the exercise group were subjected to treadmill exercise （5 days per week, 30 minutes per day, over a 4-week period）, the light group rats were irradiated （5 days per week, 30 minutes per day, 10 000 Ix, over a 4-week period）, the exercise ＋ light group rats were subjected to treadmill exercise in combination with bright light exposure, and the control group rats remained sedentary over a 4-week period. Compared with the control group, there was a significant increase in neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of rats in the exercise, light, and exercise ＋ light groups. Moreover, the expression level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the rat hippocampal dentate gyrus was significantly higher in the exercise group and light group than that in the control group. Interestingly, there was no significant difference in brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression between the control group and exercise ＋ light group. These results indicate that low-intensity treadmill exercise （first 5 minutes at a speed of 2 m/min, second 5 minutes at a speed of 5 m/min, and the last 20 minutes at a speed of 8 m/min） or bright-light exposure therapy induces positive biochemical changes in the brain. In view of these findings, we propose that moderate exercise or exposure to sunlight during childhood can be beneficial for neural development.

Lactoferrin （LF） and retinoic acid （RA） are enriched in colostrum, milk, and mucosal tissues. We recently showed that LF-induced IgA class switching through binding to betaglycan （transforming growth factor-beta receptor III, TpRIII） and activation of canonical TGF-p signaling. We investigated the combined effect of LF and RA on the overall IgA response. An increase in IgA production by LF was further augmented by RA. This combination effect was also evident in Ig germ-line α （GLa） transcription and GLa promoter activity, indicating that LF in cooperation with RA increased IgA isotype switching. We subsequently found that RA enhanced TβRIII expression and that this increase contributed to LF-stimulated IgA production. In addition to the IgA response, LF and RA in combination also enhanced the expression of the gut-homing molecules C-C chemokine receptor 9 （CCR9） and a4β7 on B cells. Finally, peroral administration of LF and RA enhanced the frequency of CCR9＋ IgA＋ plasma cells in the lamina propria. Taken together, these results suggest that LF in cooperation with RA can contribute to the establishment of gut IgA responses.

Little progress has been made in the genetic analysis of drought tolerance,because it is a complex trait controlled by a number of genes and affected by various environmental *** here,we screened drought tolerant varieties with modified leaf water loss rate assay and visual drought tolerant phenotype in the greenhouse conditions with more than 800 *** these varieties,Samgang,Gumei4 and Apo showed the lowest of leaf water loss rate and strong drought tolerant phenotype and we choose Samgang for further *** identify which chromosome loci in Samgang have functions for drought tolerant,we generated a double-haploid(DH)population of 101 individuals derived from a cross of the drought tolerant variety Samgang and the drought sensitive variety *** drought phenotype and relative water content(RWC)were examined for phenotypic evaluation of double-haploid population under drought stress *** score the drought phenotype degrees of this population,we withheld water for 6weeks and treated the watering for 7 *** watering,visual phenotype was observed 1 to 9 degree according to the standard evaluation system for rice,*** sensitive parent Nagdong was almost died and was scored as 9 degree,while tolerant parent Samgang showed slightly leaf tip drying phenotype and was scored as 3 degree in our experimental *** of 3 QTLs were detected on chromosome2,6,and 11 for visual drought phenotype with 175 molecular *** these QTLs,QTL on chromosome 11 with flanking markers RM26755-RM287 accounted for 24.4%phenotype variation with a LOD score of *** this QTL also functioned for relative water content trait.

Programmed death ligand-1 expression and its prognostic role in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

AIM To investigate the expression and prognostic role of programmed death ligand-1(PD-L1) in locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC).METHODS A total of 200 patients with ESCC who underwent radical esophagectomy with standard lymphadenectomy as the initial definitive treatment in Seoul National University Hospital from December 2000 to April 2013 were eligible for this analysis. Tissue microarrays were constructed by collecting tissue cores from surgical specimens, and immunostained with antibodies directed against PD-L1, p16, and c-Met. Medical records were reviewed retrospectively to assess clinical outcomes. Patients were divided into two groups by PD-L1 status, and significant differences in clinicopathologic characteristics between the two groups were assessed. RESULTS Tumor tissues from 67 ESCC patients(33.5%) were PDL1-positive. Positive p16 expression was observed in 21 specimens(10.5%). The H-score for c-Met expression was ≥ 50 in 42 specimens(21.0%). Although PDL1-positivity was not significantly correlated with any clinical characteristics including age, sex, smoking/alcoholic history, stage, or differentiation, H-scores for c-Met expression were significantly associated with PDL1-positivity(OR = 2.34, 95%CI: 1.16-4.72, P = 0.017). PD-L1 expression was not significantly associated with a change in overall survival(P = 0.656). In contrast, the locoregional relapse rate tended to increase(P = 0.134), and the distant metastasis rate was significantly increased(HR = 1.72, 95%CI: 1.01-2.79, P = 0.028) in patients with PD-L1-positive ESCC compared to those with PD-L1-negative *** PD-L1 expression is positively correlated with c-Met expression in ESCC. PD-L1 may play a critical role in distant failure and progression of ESCC.

Impacts of Pig Manure-Based Liquid Fertilizer Agricultural Application on the Water Quality of Agricultural Catchment

This study was conducted to understand the effect of the livestock liquid fertilizer treatment at field-scale up to catchment-scale on the water quality properties. Cultivated paddy rice and upland plots located in Gyeonggi province, Korea were treated with two different liquid fertilizers, SP (Liquid fertilizer with storage process) and SCB (Liquid fertilizer with slurry composting and bio-filtration process). Plots with no fertilizer (control A) and chemical fertilizer (control B) were also prepared for comparison. Water quantity and quality were monitored at the catchment outlet for assessing the effect on water quality of stream water. As a result, the losses of N and P and the values of EC (Electronic Conductivity) in the surface drainage water from paddy rice plots treated with SP and SCB were higher than those from the control plots (A and B). In addition, the losses of N and P by the runoff water from upland plots with SP and SCB treatment were higher than those from control plots (A and B). The nutrient outflow from paddy rice fields and uplands with application of liquid pig manure was higher than those from the control plots (A and B). Particularly, the outflow from uplands may directly affect the water quality in neighboring streams. This caused the major eutrophication problem in stream water. In conclusion, it is necessary to establish the proper management practices to prevent the nutrient losses from agricultural fields and the pollutants against water environments.

Novel monoclonal antibody against beta 1 integrin enhances cisplatin efficacy in human lung adenocarcinoma cells

The use of anti-beta 1 integrin monoclonal antibody in lung cancer treatment has proven beneficial. Here, we developed a novel monoclonal antibody （mAb）, called P5, by immunizing mice with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells （PBMC）. Its anti-tumor effect is now being tested, in a clinical phase Ⅲ trial, in combinato- rial treatments with various chemical drugs. To confirm that P5 indeed binds to beta 1 integrin, cell lysates were immunoprecipitated with commercial anti-beta 1 integrin mAb （TS2/16） and immunoblotted against P5 to reveal a 140 kDa molecular weight band, as expected. Immunoprecipitation with P5 followed by LC/MS protein sequence analysis further verified P5 antigen to be beta 1 integrin. Cisplatin treatment upregulated cell surface expression of beta 1 integrin in A549 cells, while causing inhibition of cell growth. When cells were co-treated with different concentrations of P5 mAb, the cisplatin-mediated inhibitory effect was enhanced in a dose-dependent manner. Our findings show that a combinatorial treatment of P5 mAb and cisplatin in A549 cells resulted in a 30% increase in apoptosis, compared to baseline, and significantly more when compared to either the cisplatin or P5 alone group. The entire peptide sequences in CDR from variable region of Ig heavy and light chain gene for P5 mAb are also disclosed. Together, these results provide evidence of the beneficial effect of P5 mAb in combinatorial treatment of human lung adenocarcinoma.

Preventing condensation of objective lens in noncontact wide-angle viewing systems during vitrectomy

AIM： To assess the optimal conditions for preventing condensation of objective lens during vitrectomy with noncontact wide-angle viewing systems（WAVSs）. METHODS： We explored the effectiveness of the coating with ophthalmic viscoelastic device（OVDs） on the corneal surface and the soaking the objective lens in warm-saline for preventing condensation of objective lens. First, to find the optimal soaking time to keep the objective lens warm, we measured the temperature of objective lens every minute after soaking in warm saline. Second, to find optimal distance between cornea and objective lens, which provide as wide a view as possible and less condensation at the same time, we measured the condensation time with different distances. With the obtained optimal soaking time and distance, we explored the effect of coating cornea with OVDs and soaking objective lens in warm saline on condensation ***： One and 5 min of soaking in warm saline was most effective for keeping the lens warm enough（45.1℃±2.1℃ for 1 min and 46.4℃±1.0℃ for 5 min, P=0.109）. The mean condensation times for the control group at 1, 3, and 5 mm from corneal surface to objective lens were 1±0.4, 4±1.4, 190±26.1 s, respectively, thus 5 mm was most optimal distance for vitrectomy with WAVSs. For the OVD coating group, the mean condensation times were 1.5±0.3, 13±1.4, and 200±23.9 s at 1, 3, and 5 mm distance and borderline significant compared with control group（P=0.068, 0.051, and 0.063, respectively）. With the 1-minute warm saline soaking group, the mean condensation time were extended to 188±34.4, 416±65.7, and 600±121.3 s at 1, 3, and 5 mm distance and statistically significant compared with control（P=0.043, 0.041 and 0.043, respectively）.CONCLUSION： OVD coating on corneal surface shows no difference on condensation time with control group.
