In this paper we propose a general framework for the uncertainty quantification of quantities of interest for high-contrast single-phase flow *** is based on the generalized multiscale finite element method(GMsFEM)and multilevel Monte carlo(MLMc)*** former provides a hierarchy of approximations of different resolution,whereas the latter gives an efficient way to estimate quantities of interest using samples on different *** number of basis functions in the online GMsFEM stage can be varied to determine the solution resolution and the computational cost,and to efficiently generate samples at different *** particular,it is cheap to generate samples on coarse grids but with low resolution,and it is expensive to generate samples on fine grids with high *** suitably choosing the number of samples at different levels,one can leverage the expensive computation in larger fine-grid spaces toward smaller coarse-grid spaces,while retaining the accuracy of the final Monte carlo ***,we describe a multilevel Markov chain Monte carlo method,which sequentially screens the proposal with different levels of approximations and reduces the number of evaluations required on fine grids,while combining the samples at different levels to arrive at an accurate *** framework seamlessly integrates the multiscale features of the GMsFEM with the multilevel feature of the MLMc methods following the work in[26],and our numerical experiments illustrate its efficiency and accuracy in comparison with standard Monte carlo estimates.

Juveniles of the shore crab Hemigrapsus oregonensis are highly variable in color, ranging from the typical yellowish- green of adults to pure white and myriad patterns of white mottling and other disruptive markings, but large individuals with white coloration appear to be very rare. Using image analysis to quantify the relative ＂whiteness＂ of beaches, we sampled crabs from nine locations in Washington state that varied widely in their amount of shell fragments and other light-colored material. The total proportion of white individuals in the different locations was strongly correlated to the proportion of white material on the beaches, but there was a striking difference between sexes. Although white specimens of both sexes declined significantly at sizes above 10 mm carapace width, white females generally persisted throughout the entire female size range on lighter-colored beaches while white males larger than 10 mm were virtually absent from all of the sampled populations. Pure white males held on dark backgrounds in captivity remained white, as they lack the dark chromatophores in their hypoderrnis needed to change color; off-white males became darker and in some cases lightened up again when transferred back to a white background. Behavioral differences between the sexes may result in differential mortality of white individuals by visual predators [current Zoology 61 （4） 729-738, 2015 ].

BAcKGROUND Multi-phase computed tomography(cT)or magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)has been the standard of care for hepatocellular carcinoma(Hcc)diagnosis for *** sUMMARY We report a case series of four patients in whom positron emission tomographycomputed tomography(PET-cT)scan complemented the conventional cT/MRI scans in evaluating treatment *** these four cases the conventional multi-phase cT and MRI failed to identify residual Hcc disease post-treatment,while PET-cT complemented and aided in treatment response *** each case,the addition of PET-cT identified and located residual Hcc disease,allowed retreatment,and altered medical *** This case series suggests that PET-cT should perhaps play a role in the Hcc management algorithm,in addition to the conventional contrast-enhanced multiphase scans.

The story of phosphorothioate modifications of DNA begins over 50 years ago and has unfolded like Frost's walk in the woods[1].In 1970,Fritz Eckstein synthesized oligonucleotides in which a non-bridging oxygen in the phosphodiester backbone was replaced by sulfur–the first phosphorothioate-modified nucleic acid[2].Twenty years passed until Zixin Deng and colleagues discovered a DNA degradation phenotype in bacteria possessing a 5-gene dnd cluster,with electrophoretic degradation caused by incorporation of sulfur into bacterial genomes[3].These roads of chemistry and biology met again another 20 years later with the discovery by Wang et *** Dnd proteins insert sulfur as a phosphorothioate in the genomes of diverse bacteria[4].This walk in the woods now picked up speed.

several testosterone preparations are used in the treatment of hypogonadism in the ageing male. These therapies differ in their convenience, flexibility, regional availability and expense but share their pharmacokinetic basis of approval and dearth of long-term safety data. The brevity and relatively reduced cost of pharmacokinetic based registration trials provides little commercial incentive to develop improved novel therapies for the treatment of late onset male hypogonadism. selective androgen receptor modulators （sARMs） have been shown to provide anabolic benefit in the absence of androgenic effects on prostate, hair and skin. current clinical development for sARMs is focused on acute muscle wasting conditions with defined clinical endpoints of physical function and lean body mass. similar regulatory clarity concerning clinical deficits in men with hypogonadism is required before the beneficial pharmacology and desirable pharmacokinetics of sARMs can be employed in the treatment of late onset male hypogonadism.
