Tribological and vibrational characteristics of AISI 316L tested at elevated temperature and 600 Torr vacuum

Friction and wear studies enable the investigation of material interaction between two sliding surfaces in contact. In the present investigation, the coefficient of friction and the wear resistance of AISI 316 L parts were studied under self-mating, dry sliding conditions using a pin-on-disc type configuration. The experiments were conducted at vacuum based high temperature pin-on-disc tribometer. The 4 mm diameter pin and 180 mm diameter disc were subjected to varying sliding velocities(0.5, 0.75 and 1.5 m/s) and were operated in 200, 400, 500 and 580 ℃ temperature at 600 Torr vacuum. The variation of specific wear rates with sliding velocities and different environmental conditions was studied. The morphology of sliding/rubbed surfaces was observed using Scanning Electron microscope. In summary, it was found that a severe to mild wear transition occurred in sliding under operating conditions. Increased wear rates have been observed for 500 and 580 ℃ with increasing sliding velocity. Adhesive wear has been found to be predominant at 500 and 580 ℃ where as de-lamination has been observed at ambient temperature,200 and 400 ℃ in vacuum. The present paper also carried out the numerical analysis of the vibration behavior of AISI 316 L under thermal environment. Results revealed that at high temperature vibrational amplitude and natural frequency is significantly reduced. This can be attributed to the reduction in stiffness of the material at elevated temperatures. This high amplitude vibration during service can lead to high wear rate.

The formulation of nanocrystallinc NiTi shape memory alloys has potential effects in mechanical stimulation and medical im- plantology. The present work elucidates the effect of milling time on the product＇s structural characteristics, chemical composition, and mi- crohardness for NiTi synthesized by mechanical alloying for different milling durations. Increasing the milling duration led to the formation of a nanocrystalline NiTi intermetallic at a higher level. The formation of nanocrystalline materials was directed through cold fusion, fractur- ing, and the development of a steady state, which were influenced by the accumulation of strain energy. In the morphological study, uninter- rupted cold diffusion and fracturing were visualized using transmission electron microscopy. particle size analysis revealed that the mean particle size was reduced to -93 μm after 20 h of milling. The mechanical strength was enhanced by the formation of a nanocrystalline in- termetallic phase at longer milling time, which was confirmed by the results of Vickers hardness analyses.

Sensitivity of digital elevation models:The scenario from two tropical mountain river basins of the Western Ghats,India

The paper evaluates sensitivity of various spaceborne digital elevation models （DEms）, viz., Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer （ASTER）, Shuttle Radar Topography mapping mission （SRTm） and Global multi-resolution Terrain Elevation Data 2010 （GmTED）, in comparison with the DEm （TOpO） derived from contour data of 20 m interval of Survey of India topographic sheets of 1 ： 50,000 scale. Several topographic attributes, such as elevation （above mean sea level）, relative relief, slope, aspect, curvature, slope-length and -steepness （LS） factor, terrain ruggedness index （TRI）, topo- graphic wetness index （TWI）, hypsometric integral （lhyp） and drainage network attributes （stream number and stream length） of two tropical mountain river basins, viz. muthirapuzha River Basin and pambar River Basin are compared to evaluate the variations. Though the basins are comparable in extent, they differ in respect of terrain characteristics and climate. The result.,; suggest that ASTER and SRTm provide equally reliable representation of topography portrayed by TOp（） and the topographic attributes extracted from the spaceborne DEms are in agreement with those derived from TOpO. Despite the coarser resolution, SRTm shows relatively higher vertical accuracy （RmSE -- 23 and 20 m respectively in mRB and pRB） compared to ASTER （RmSE - 33 and 24 m） and GmTED （RmSE - 59 and 48 m）. Vertical accuracy of all the spaceborne DEms is influenced by relief of the terrain as well as type of vegetation. Further, GmTED shows significant deviation for most of the attributes, indicating its inability for mountain-river-basin-scale studies.

Impact of poly chlorinated biphenyl (Aroclor 1254) and vitamin C on antioxidant system of rat ventral prostate

Aim: To evaluate the effect of polychlorinated biphenyls (pCB) and vitamin C on ventral prostatic antioxidant system in adult male rats. methods: A group of 20 adult male rats were administered ip Aroclor 1254 in corn oil at a dose of 2 mg·kg-1·day-1 for 30 days. Ten control rats were administered only the vehicle. After 30 days the treated rats were divided at random into 2 sub-groups of 10 animals each. One sub-group received vitamin C at a dose of 500 mg·kg-1·day-1 for 10 days. The other group was maintained as Aroclor 1254 control. Twenty-four hours after the last treatment the rats were killed by decapitation. Ventral prostatic homogenate was prepared and used for the estimation of enzymatic antioxidants, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), lipid peroxidation (LpO) and prostatic acid phosphatase. The serum levels of total T3, total T4, TSH, testosterone and estradiol were also assayed. Results: The body weight and ventral prostatic weight were reduced in pCB treated rats. The activities of SOD, CAT, GST and acid phosphatase were decreased while the levels of H2O2 and lipid peroxidation were increased in the ventral prostate of pCB treated rats. Administration of vitamin C restored these parameters. Serum levels of thyroid hormones, estradiol and testosterone were decreased in pCB treated animals. Administration of vitamin C restored the thyroid hormone levels. Conclusion: pCB induces oxidative stress and decreases the antioxidant enzymes in the ventral prostate of adult male rats; the effects could be reversed by the administration of vitamin C.

Alternative splicing enhances transcriptome complexity in desiccating seeds

Before being dispersed in the environment, mature seeds need to be dehydrated. The survival of seeds after dispersal depends on their low hydration in combination with high desiccation tolerance. These characteristics are estab- lished during seed maturation. Some key seed maturation genes have been reported to be regulated by alternative splicing （AS）. However, so far AS was described only for single genes and a comprehensive analysis of AS during seed maturation has been lacking. We investigated gene expression and AS during Arabidopsis thaliana seed development at a global level, before and after desiccation. Bioinformatics tools were developed to identify differentially spliced regions within genes. Our data suggest the importance and shows the peculiar features of AS during seed desiccation. We identified AS in 347o of genes that are expressed at both timepoints before and after desiccation. most of these AS transcript variants had not been found before in other tissues. Among the AS genes some seed master regulators could be found. Interestingly, 6% of all expressed transcripts were not transcriptionally regulated during desiccation, but only modified by AS. We propose that AS should be more routinely taken into account in the analysis of transcriptomic data to prevent overlooking potentially important regulators.

palm print Identification Using Improved Histogram of Oriented Lines

Automatic palmprint identification has received much attention in security applications and law enforcement. The performance of a palmprint identification system is improved by means of feature extraction and classification. Feature extraction methods such as Subspace learning are highly sensitive to the rotation variances, translation and illumination in image identification. Thus, Histogram of Oriented Lines (HOL) has not obtained promising performance for palmprint recognition so far. In this paper, we propose a new descriptor of palmprint named Improved Histogram of Oriented Lines (IHOL), which is an alternative of HOL. Improved HOL is not very sensitive to changes of translation and illumination, and has the robustness against small transformations whereas the small translation and rotations make no change in histogram value adjustment of the proposed work. The experiment results show that based on IHOL, with principal Component Analysis (pCA) subspace learning can achieve high recognition rates. The proposed method (IHOL-Cosine distance) improves 1.30% on polyU I database, and similarly (IHOL-Euclidean distance) improves 2.36% on COEp database compared with existing HOL method.

Species diversity, regeneration and dominance as influenced by canopy gaps and their characteristics in tropical evergreen forests of Western Ghats, India

Canopy gaps play a significant role in maintaining structure and composition of tropical forests. This study was carried out in tropical evergreen forests of central Western Ghats in India to understand the influence of canopy gap size and the relationship of gap regime attributes to diversity measures and regeneration. The average gap size in the study area was found to be 396 m2 and around half of gaps were 4–8 years old. Gaps created by natural single tree fall were smaller in size but significantly higher in number. Diversity and regeneration of woody species were compared with canopy gaps and intact vegetation. Species richness and diversity was higher in gaps than in intact vegetation. macaranga peltata, a shade intolerant species dominated gaps while intact vegetation was dominated by shade tolerant Kingiodendron *** size significantly influenced species diversity and regeneration. Gap area and age were significantly and negatively correlated with diversity measures but positively correlated with regeneration. Among all the attributes of gaps, regeneration was significantly positively correlated with light intensity. Gaps maintained species diversity and favored regeneration of woody species. In addition to gap size and age, other gap ecological attributes also affected species diversity and regeneration.

Fabrication of multiwalled carbon nanotube-surfactant modi fi ed sensor for the direct determination of toxic drug 4-aminoantipyrine

A multi-walled carbon nanotube （mWCNT）-cetyltrimethylammonium bromide （CRAB） surfactant com- posite modified glassy carbon electrode （GCE） was developed as a novel system for the determination of 4-aminoantipyrine（AAp）. The oxidation process was irreversible over the pH range studied and exhibited a diffusion controlled behavior. All experimental parameters were optimized. The combination of mWCNT-CRAB endows the biosensor with large surface area, good biological compatibility, electricity and stability, high selectivity and sensitivity. mWCNT-CTAB/GCE electrode gave a linear response for AAp from 5.0 x 10-9 to 4.0 x 10-8 m with a detection limit of 1.63 x 10 lo m. The modified electrode showed good selectivity against interfering species and also exhibited good reproducibility. The present elec- trochemical sensor based on the mWCNT-CFAB/GCE electrode was applied to the determination of AAp in real samples.
