mechanical properties of 7475 aluminum alloy sheets with fine subgrain structure by warm rolling

The effect of transition elements on grain refinement of 7475 aluminum alloy sheets produced by warm rolling was investigated. The alloy which contains zirconium instead of chromium showed ultra fine structures with stable subgrains after warm rolling at 350 ℃, followed by solution heat treatment at 480 ℃. The average subgrain diameter was approximately 3 pan. It became clear that zirconium in solution has the effect of stabilizing subgrains due to precipitation of fine Al3Zr compounds during warm rolling. On the other hand, chromium-bearing compounds precipitate before warm rolling and they grow up to relatively large size during warm rolling. The warm rolled sheets with fine subgrains have unique properties compared with conventional 7475 aluminum alloy sheets produced by cold rolling. The warm roiled sheets solution heat treated had subgrain structures through the thickness with a high proportion of low-angle boundary less than 15°. The strength of the warm rolled sheets in T6 condition was about 10% higher than that of conventional 7475 aluminum alloy sheets. As the most remarkable point in the warm rolled sheets, the high Lankford （r） value of 3.5 was measured in the orientation of 45° to rolling direction, with the average r-value of 2.2. The high r-value would be derived from well developed r-fiber textures, especially with the strong {011 }（211） brass component. The warm rolled sheets also had high resistance to SCC. From Kikuchi lines analysis and TEm images, it was found that PFZs were hardly formed along the low- angle boundaries of the warm rolled sheets in T6 condition. This would be a factor to lead to the improvement of resistance to SCC because of reducing the difference in electrochemical property between the grain boundary area and the grain interior.

Low-temperature catalytic preparation of multi-wall moS_(2)nanotubes

In the catalytic reduction atmosphere of H_2+CH_4+C_4H_4S, the ball-milledprecursor (NH_4)_2moS_4 is heated to 300℃ for decomposition. The as-synthesized product ischaracterized by XRD, SEm, TEm, HRTEm, EDX, and BET. The results show that multi-wall moS_2nanotubes are obtained. The length of the nanotubes is around 3 - 5 μm. The diameters of thenanotubes are homogeneous, with an inner diameter of ～15 nm, an outer diameter of ～ 30 nm, and aninterlayer (002) d-spacing of 0.63 nm. This catalytic thermal reaction occurring at low temperaturesis important for the large-scale preparation of similar transition-metal disulfide nanotubes.

Enhancement of radiosensitivity of mCF-7 breast cancer cells subjected to X-ray or carbon-ion irradiations

The sensitivity of cancer cells to radiation therapy varies based on cell cycle phase. Here we evaluated the differences between X-ray and carbon-ion irradiation with respect to cellular radiosensitivity and cancer cycle arrest in the breast cancer cell line, mCF-7. The cell survival rate, cell cycle distribution and the presence of apoptosis were measured by clonogenic assay and flow cytometry. BRCA1 and p21 protein levels were analyzed by Western blot, and the levels of human telomerase reverse transcriptase(h TERT) m RNA expression and telomere length were detected with real-time polymerase chain reaction. The results show a significant dose-dependent effects on survival rate, apoptosis and protein levels in the carbon-ion group of mCF-7 cells. Decreased proliferation was not observed at 2 Gy X-ray irradiation. There were significant differences in cellular cycle arrest, apoptosis percentages and BRCA1 and p21 protein expression between X-ray and heavy-ion groups. The results indicatedthat increasing in BRCA1 and p21 expression, and attenuation of h TERT gene expression induced by heavy-ion irradiation in mCF-7 cells might relate to mechanism of cellular radiosensitivity in G2/m arrested phase.

Effects of duration of phenytoin administration on mRNA expression of cytochrome P450 and P-glycoprotein in the liver and small intestine of rats

Phenytoin(5,5-diphenylhydantoin;DPH) induces expression of cytochromes P450(CYPs). Interactions between DPH and tacrolimus suggested that the persistence of CYP induction after discontinuation of DPH is dependent on the history of administration and dosing period of DPH. However, the relationship between the duration of DPH administration and expression of CYPs in the liver and small intestine of rats is not known. Alterations in levels of P-glycoprotein(P-gp;mDR1;ABCB1) as well as CYPs cause drug interactions in the small intestine. We examined the effects of the duration of DPH administration on expression of CYPs and P-gp in the liver and small intestine of rats. Rats were treated with DPH(100 mg/kg,peroral(p.o.) twice a day(b.d.)) for 2, 4, 8, and 16 d. mRNA levels of CYPs and P-gp were examined using the total RNA extracted from the liver and duodenum 2 h and 24 h after the final administration of DPH. CYP3 A activities were determined using microsomes. DPH administration for 2 d and 4 d markedly increased m RNA levels of CYPs such as CYP3 A1, CYP3 A2,CYP2 B1, and CYP2 B2 in the liver. A relatively long duration of DPH administration(8 d and16 d) resulted in abolition of the induction of hepatic CYP but increased CYP3 A activities were maintained. These results suggest that the duration of DPH administration could be an important determinant of hepatic CYP induction.

metallic Contaminant Detection using a High-Temperature Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices Gradiometer

We develop magnetic metallic contaminant detectors using high-temperature superconducting quantum interference devices （HTS-SQUIDs） for industrial products. Finding ultra-small metallic contaminants is an important issue for manufacturers producing commercial products such as lithium ion batteries. If such contaminants cause damages, the manufacturer of the product suffers a big financial loss due to having to recall the faulty products. Previously, we described a system for finding such ultra-smafi particles in food. In this study, we describe further developments of the system, for the reduction of the effect of the remnant field of the products, and we test the parallel magnetization of the products to generate the remnant field only at both ends of the products. In addition, we use an SQUID gradiometer in place of the magnetometer to reduce the edge effect by measuring the magnetic field gradient. We test the performances of the system and find that tiny iron particles as small as 50 × 50 μm^2 on the electrode of a lithium ion battery could be clearly detected. This detection level is difficult to achieve when using other methods.

Autoimmune hepatitis triggered by acute hepatitis A

The patient was a 57-year-old woman presenting with jaundice as the chief complaint. She began vomiting on July 10, 2003. Jaundice was noted and admitted to our hospital for thorough testing. Tests on admission indicated severe hepatitis, based on： aspartate aminotransferase （AST）, 1 076 IU/L; alanine aminotransferase （ALT）, 1 400 IU/L; total bilirubin （TB）, 20.9 mg/dL; and prothrombin time rate （PT%）, 46.9%. Acute hepatitis A （HA） was diagnosed based on negative hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis C virus RNA and positive immunoglobulin （Ig） m HA antibody, but elevation of anti-nuclear antigen （×320） and IgG （3 112 mg/dL） led to suspicion of autoimmune hepatitis （AIH）. Plasma exchange was performed for 3 d from July 17, and steroid pulse therapy was performed for 3 d starting on July 18, followed by oral steroid therapy. Liver biopsy was performed on August 5, and the results confirmed acute hepatitis and mild chronic inflammation. Levels of AST and ALT normalized, so dose of oral steroid was markedly reduced. Steroid therapy was terminated after 4 mo, as the patient had glaucoma. Starting 3 mo after cessation of steroid therapy, levels of AST and ALl began to increase again. Another liver biopsy was performed and AIH was diagnosed based on serum data and biopsy specimen. Oral steroid therapy was reinitiated. Levels of AST and ALT again normalized. The present case was thus considered to represent AIH triggered by acute HA.

Stabilization of a high-order harmonic generation seeded extreme ultraviolet free electron laser by time-synchronization control with electro-optic sampling

A fully coherent free electron laser(FEL) seeded with a higher-order harmonic(HH) pulse from high-order harmonic generation(HHG) is successfully operated for a sufficiently prolonged time in pilot user experiments by using a timing drift feedback. For HHG-seeded FELs, the seeding laser pulses have to be synchronized with electron bunches. Despite seeded FELs being non-chaotic light sources in principle, external laser-seeded FELs are often unstable in practice because of a timing jitter and a drift between the seeding laser pulses and the accelerated electron bunches. Accordingly,we constructed a relative arrival-timing monitor based on non-invasive electro-optic sampling(EOS). The EOS monitor made uninterrupted shot-to-shot monitoring possible even during the seeded FEL operation. The EOS system was then used for arrival-timing feedback with an adjustability of 100 fs for continual operation of the HHG-seeded FEL. Using the EOS-based beam drift controlling system, the HHG-seeded FEL was operated over half a day with an effective hit rate of 20%–30%. The output pulse energy was 20 μJ at the 61.2 nm wavelength. Towards seeded FELs in the water window region, we investigated our upgrade plan to seed high-power FELs with HH photon energy of 30–100 e V and lase at shorter wavelengths of up to 2 nm through high-gain harmonic generation(HGHG) at the energy-upgraded SPring-8Compact SASE Source(SCSS) accelerator. We studied a benefit as well as the feasibility of the next HHG-seeded FEL machine with single-stage HGHG with tunability of a lasing wavelength.

Induction of adaptive response in utero by ionizing radiation:A radiation quality dependent phenomenon

Investigation on possible induction of adaptive response(AR)by high-liner energy transfer(LET)particle radiation for protection against low-LET photon radiation-induced detrimental effects has not yet been performed in *** study verified if an AR could be induced by high-LET particle radiation from accelerated heavy ions against low-LET X-ray radiation-induced detrimental effects on fetal *** body irradiation of pregnant C57BL/6J mice were performed by delivering a priming dose ranging from 10 mGy to 320 mGy of particle radiation on gestation day 11 followed one day later by a challenge dose at 3500 mGy from X-ray *** monoenergetic beams of carbon,silicon and iron with the LET values of about 15,55,and 200 KeV/μm,respectively,were *** suppression by the priming radiation of the detrimental effects(fetal death,malformation,or low body weight)was used as the endpoints for judgment of a successful AR induction on gestation day *** of AR was not *** the other hand,the priming dose of high-LET particle radiation,in some cases,even increased the detrimental effects induced by the challenge dose from low-LET X-ray *** existence of AR induced by high-LET radiation in cultured mammalian cells in vitro and in certain tissues of laboratory mice in vivo was demonstrated,the present study did not suggest that low dose of high-LET particle radiation could induce an AR in fetal mice in utero under the setup of our experimental system.
