Techniques of Remote Sensing and GIS as Tools for Visualizing Impact of Climate Change-Induced Flood in the Southern African Region

Flooding is a major problem facing Southern African region. The region has been experiencing flood for the past two decades. This flood event has been exacerbated in recent years by global weather pattern known as La Ni?a which cools ocean waters in the equatorial Pacific and changes rainfall patterns across the world. This change in weather pattern has resulted in increased rainfall over Southern Africa causing flash floods resulting in extensive socioeconomic loses, casualties and environmental damage. This study employs remote sensing and geographical information systems (GIS) data to visualize the impact of climate change caused by flooding in the Southern African region in order to assist decision makers’ plans for future occurrences. To achieve these objectives, the study used Digital Elevation model (DEm), temporal Landsat Enhanced Thematic mapper Plus (ETm+) and moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (mODIS) satellites data obtained from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and NASA’s Earth Observatory websites in order to show the spatial dimensions of the damage and the flooded area. Results of the study revealed notable damages to social and natural environments as well as flood risk zones and watercourses in the study area. The paper concludes by outlining policy recommendations in the form of the need for building drainage ditches on the flat plains identified in this study to accommodate flood flows, the design of a comprehensive Regional Emergency Information System (REIS) with support from the governments in the study area and the neighboring countries. Building such system, the paper concludes could offer decision-makers access to the appropriate spatio-temporal data for monitoring climate change induced emergencies related to seasonal floods.

monodisperse hollow magnetite microspheres were successfully synthesized by an one-step process through a tem-plate-free hydrothermal approach employing simultaneously a mixture of FeCl3.6H2O and ferrocene as precursor and a propylene glycol-isopropanol mixture as solvent. The morphologies and properties of the magnetite microspheres were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEm), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), adsorption of nitrogen (BET method) and SQUID magnetometry. The results show that the microspheres consist of a single crystalline phase of magnetite. On the other hand, the size and the internal hollow of the microspheres depend on the temperature of growth and can be tuned by modifying the synthesis conditions.

A ternary Ni2FeSb shape memory alloy was fabricated by powder metallurgy route. Sintering kinetics was estimated from dilatometry tests; whereas the microstructure and morphology of the powder and consolidated bulk samples were evaluated by XRD and SEm, respectively. microhardness tests were performed on the surface of sintered samples. The results indicated that milling time has an effect on the shape and particle size as well as the homogeneity of the crystalline structures of the powders. Samples with longer milling time presented higher relative densities, better distribution of the elements on the alloy as well as the L21 and martensite phases, which will give the shape memory effect. The estimated activation energy values ranged from 109 to 282 kJ/mol at temperatures between 750 and 1273 K, indicating that sintering is controlled mainly by volume diffusion. microhardness was improved by increasing the milling time and the heating rate.

Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis (EPTB) is the TB involving organs other than lungs. The diagnosis of EPTB can be difficult, as suspicion is challenging, because it presents with nonspecific clinical features and atypical presentation. Furthermore, patients with HIV may present with fever of unknown origin (FUO) as the only symptom. We present a clinical case of a 49 years old Puertorrican female with HIV-AIDS and no high-risk behavior with an abdominal pain and fever. The investigation confirmed an Abdominal Tuberculosis. This case emphasizes the need to add Abdominal tuberculosis (ATB) within the differential diagnosis and discuss the diagnostic process.

＜正＞ micro fluidic oscillators were obtained from wall attachment micro fluidic amplifiers using a feedback loop from the outputs to the control inputs. These devices can be used as actuators, as mixers, and also as flow meters, when the oscillation frequency is proportional to the volumetric flow in subsonic and moderately compressible conditions. The devices were then made in a SU-8 based epoxy photo resist using photolithography ultraviolet process. The article shows the results obtained in the experimental tests of the devices with gases （nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide）. The dimensions are of the order of 280 urn. The typical variation of the frequency with volumetric flow presents a range close to thousands of Hz. The oscillation frequencies were obtained using hot wire filaments （in this case with 12 urn of diameter）. The experimental results indicated which operation of the micro fluidic oscillator were direct function of the length of feedback loop and the velocity inside of the interaction region.

FTIR-ATR and multivariate Calibration for the Prediction of Biodiesel Concentration in Petrodiesel Blends

The increasing use of petrodiesel-biodiesel fuel blends throughout the world requires fast, economic and efficient analytical techniques that can be used for the quality control of these fuels. In this work, we developed an analytical method for determining the concentration of African palm biodiesel in blends with petrodiesel;the method is based on infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR). To build a prediction model, nineteen petrodiesel-biodiesel blends were prepared in triplicate with biodiesel concentrations for 0%-100% by weight. The blends were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the spectral fingerprint data were used to build a prediction model through PLS regression. The optimal number of principal components (PCs), the standard error of calibration (SEC), the standard validation error (SEV), the correlation coefficient of calibration (r Cal) and the validation correlation coefficient (r Val) were used to validate the predictive ability of the model. The results show that the model obtained in this work has a good ability for determining the concentration of African palm biodiesel in petrodiesel-biodiesel blends.
