Comparison of cognitive and UHDRS measures in monitoring disease progression in Huntington’s disease: a 12-month longitudinal study

Progressive cognitive decline is a feature of Huntington’s disease(HD),an inherited neurodegenerative movement *** neuropsychological testing is the‘gold standard’to establish cognitive status but is often impractical in time-constrained *** study evaluated the utility of brief cognitive tests(MMSE and MoCA),UHDRS measures and a comprehensive neuropsychological tests battery in monitoring short-term disease progression in ***-two manifest HD patients and 22 matched controls were assessed at baseline and 12-month.A linear mixed-effect model showed that although the HD group had minimal change in overall global cognition after 12 months,they did show a significant decline relative to the control *** controls exhibited a practice effect in most of the cognitive domain scores over *** decline at 12-month in HD was found in the executive function domain but the effect of this on global cognitive score was masked by the improvement in their language domain *** varying practice effects by cognitive domain with repeated testing indicates the importance of comparing HD patients to control group in research trials and that cognitive progression over 12 months in HD should not be judged by changes in global cognitive *** three brief cognitive tests effectively described cognition of HD patients on cross-sectional *** UHDRS cognitive component,which focuses on testing executive function and had low variance over time,is a more reliable brief substitute for comprehensive neuropsychological testing than MMSE and MoCA in monitoring cognitive changes in HD patients after 12 months.

Background:There is limited evidence on caregiver outcomes associated with mild cognitive impairment in patients with Parkinson’s disease(PD-MCI)and the coping strategies used by these ***:To investigate this relationship,we examined levels of burden,depression,anxiety,coping strategies and positive aspects of caregiving in the informal caregivers of 96 PD *** PD patients were classified using MDS-Task Force Level II criteria as showing either normal cognition(PD-N;n=51),PD-MCI(n=30)or with dementia(PDD;n=15).Results:Mean Zarit Burden Interview(ZBI)score increased significantly between carers of PD-N(M=13.39,SD=12.22)compared to those of PD-MCI patients(M=22.00,SD=10.8),and between carers of PD-MCI and PDD patients(M=29.33,SD=9.59).Moreover,the proportion of carers showing clinically significant levels of burden(ZBI score≥21)also increased as the patients’cognitive status declined(18% for PD-N;60% for PD-MCI;and 80%for PDD)and was mirrored by an increasing amount of time spent providing care by the *** ZBI score was independent of patient neuropsychiatric symptoms,motor function,disease duration and time that caregivers spent *** use of different coping strategies increased with worsening ***,we found only equivocal evidence that the use of problem-focused,emotion-focused and dysfunctional coping mediated the association between patient cognitive status and caregiver burden,because the inverse models that used caregiver burden as the mediator were also ***:The study highlights the impact of Parkinson’s disease on those providing care when the patient’s cognition is poor,including those with *** well-being has important implications for caregiver support,nursing home placement and disease course.

Rough singular integrals associated to surfaces of revolution on product spaces

We study the Lpboundedness of singular integral operators along surfaces of revolution on product spaces. The Lpboundedness for these operators are obtained under very weak conditions on kernels. Our results are new and they improve several previously known results. Furthermore, they are natural extensions of many known results on singular integrals in the one-parameter setting and they subsume many other corresponding results on the product space setting.

If poetics refers broadly to the principles by which things are made, how is the kind of process that yields poetry （in the narrow sense） related to other kinds of making？ This essay explores promising resonances between traditional poetics and new paradigms coming out of complexity and systems theory. Of particular interest is Terrence Deacon＇s Incomplete Nature, an account of the relationships among layers of emergent order in the universe, under the heading of a general theory of dynamics. In particular, this essay understands poetry in relation to other kinds of making through three principles Deacon identifies as crucial： constraint, emergence, and absence. These principles tend to validate rather than to undermine traditional accounts of poetic making as inspiration, often involving entification in the form of attribution of creative agency to entities such as muses or to the text itself.

Charting Disaster Recovery via Google Street View: A Social Science Perspective on Challenges Raised by the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster

There is increasing interest in using Google Street View(GSV) for research purposes, particularly with regard to ‘‘virtually auditing'' the built environment to assess environmental quality. Research in this field to date generally suggests GSV is a reliable means of understanding the ‘‘real world'' environment. But limitations around the dates and resolution of images have been identified. An emerging strand within this literature is also concerned with the potential of GSV to understand recovery post-disaster. Using the GSV data set for the evacuated area around the Fukushima Dai'ichi nuclear power plant as a case study, this article evaluates GSV as a means of assessing disaster recovery in a dynamic situation with remaining uncertainty and a significant value and emotive dimension. The article suggests that GSV does have value in giving a high-level overview of the postdisaster situation and has potential to track recovery and resettlement over time. Drawing on social science literature relating to Fukushima, and disasters more widely, the article also argues it is imperative for researchers using GSV to reflect carefully on the wider socio-cultural contexts that are often not represented in the photo montage.

In the South Boulder Canal near Denver,CO,USA,turbine blades that resemble the mixers used to stir cake batter in kitchens(Fig.1)spin in the rushing water[1].Each of the turbines,manufactured by Emrgy of Atlanta,GA,USA,generates up to 25 kW of electricity for the area’s grid[2].In an orchard in southern Italy,an arcade of solar panels stands above rows of citron trees,which are valuable for the essential oils in their fruits[3].The solar panels not only produce electricity for local homes,but also protect the trees from the sun,reducing their water use by 70%[3].These are two examples of a clean energy trend:integrating power-generation with other *** the approach called agrivoltaics,for example,farmers and ranchers grow crops or raise livestock around and beneath solar panels(Fig.2)[4].Experts hope that such add-on strategies can spare farmland,cut the environmental costs of clean energy development,supply extra income to landowners,and furnish other benefits[5,6].
