This paper reports a novel micro-blast driven manufacturing process for micro-forming of Aluminum foils. The micro-blast is realized by using a nanoenergetic material system comprising of Bi_2O_3 microrods and aluminum particles. There is an enhanced need of forming of thin aluminum foil structures in small regions from point of view of drug packaging etc. The process developed caters to this need by using a single shot forming process using a micro-blast source. The micro-blast that is generated from an energetic composite system is made highly tunable by modulating the peak pressure generated through the blasting process and their impact in micro-forming of thin aluminum foils is observed through parametric studies. The engineering challenge involved in these experiments is to tune the blast pressure properties in order to address the forming of thin metal sheets with limiting boundary values as defined by the failure criteria. A variety of characterization techniques related to a thorough analysis of the synthesized material viz. X-ray diffraction(XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) etc, are used to tune the functional properties like gauge blast pressure etc, of material system. We have found a material system that can generate a maximum peak pressure of 73.8 MPa with pressurization rate of 2460 GPas^(-1) and that is able to accomplish micro-forming on thin metal foils(around 0.3 mm thickness). Experimental investigations demonstrate that tunabilty aspect of the energetic composites when exercised can enable variant processes such as embossing, coining, drilling etc. which may be of significant utility to drug packaging industries. A proper mathematical modeling of the forming process and critical process parameters therein have also been detailed.

Karakoram Himalaya(KH) has continental climatic conditions and possesses largest concentration of glaciers outside the polar regions. The melt water from these glaciers is a major contributor to the Indus river. In this study, various methods have been used to estimate the ice volume in the Karakoram Range of glaciers such as Coregistration of Optically Sensed Images and Correlation(COSI-Corr) method and Area-Volume relations. Landsat 8 satellite data has been used to generate the ice displacement, velocity and thickness map. Our study for 558 Karakoram glaciers revealed that the average ice thickness in Karakoram is 90 m. Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR) survey has been conducted in one of the KH glacier i.e. Saser La glacier and the collected GPR data is used for the validation of satellite derived thickness map. GPR measured glacier thickness values are found comparable with satellite estimated values with RMSE of 4.3 m. The total ice volume of the Karakoram glaciers is estimated to be 1607±19 km3(1473±17 Gt), which is equivalent to 1473±17 km3 of water equivalent. Present study also covers the analysis of glacier surface displacement, velocity and ice thickness values with reference to glacier mean slope.

Ever increasing pressures on tropical forests worldwide due to anthropogenic disturbances have greatly affected both above-and belowground functioning of these *** fine roots play major ecological roles in forests through assisting in nutrient and water uptake and returning elements to the soil environment,coarse roots play an important role in C *** studied changes in fine and coarse root biomass,production,turnover and carbon and nitrogen return to the soil in two regenerating forest stands(RFs)following stonemining that were 5 years(RF-5)and 15 years(RF-15)post-disturbance compared with a natural forest stand(NF)in Mizoram,North-east ***(<2mm)and coarse root(2-10 mm)biomass differed significantly among the forest stands and ranged from239(RF-5)to 415(NF)and 230(RF-5)to 436(NF)g m 2,*** root(fine+coarse)biomass increased during stand development but the proportion of very fine root(<0.5 mm)to total root production *** root biomass decreased with increasing soil *** and total root biomass showed strong seasonal correlations with soil moisture,more so than for rainfall and temperature,whereas these relationships were less clear for the coarse root *** amount of N(25-55 kg ha-1)and C(1.9-3.6t ha-1)stored in root biomass increased with stand age with a corresponding increase in production and turnover of C and N to the *** to these tropical forests negatively affected root dynamics,influenced their spatiotemporal patterns,and reduced the production,amount and availability of nutrients returned to the soil along with a strong reduction in the root biomass carbon pool and sequestration in carbon residence *** observed that root growth,especially fine roots,is dependent on abiotic variables,and plays a significant role in early stages of secondary succession by adding organic matter and nutrients through high turnover rates in these forests.

Separation of Copper and Nickel by Solvent Extraction Using LIX 664N

Separation of copper and nickel by liquid-liquid extraction from aqueous solutions was studied using LIX 664N in kerosene as solvent. Both metals were taken in their sulfate form and ratio of copper to nickel in feed solutions was maintained as 10:1. LIX 664N concentration in kerosene was varied from 10% to 40% (v/v) and its effect was studied on percent extraction of copper and nickel for organic to aqueous (O:A) phase ratio of 2:1 at pH 2. Experimental results showed that at pH 2, copper was selectively extracted from its mixture with nickel. Selectivity for copper extraction was as high as 6000 with 40% LIX 664N. Calculations using extraction isotherm indicate almost complete recovery of copper in two stages with O:A ratio of 1:1 and in one stage with O:A ratio of 2:1. After extraction of copper, the pH of raffinate containing nickel was adjusted to a value of 9 by addition of ammonia solution. The effect of LIX 664N concentration on extraction of nickel was studied. Up to 80% nickel could be extracted with 30% LIX 664N at O:A phase ratio of 2:1. Stripping of copper from the organic phase with 180 g/l sulfuric acid at O:A phase ratio of 1:1 gave 98.5% copper recovery in a two-stage operation.
