Extended protective effects of three dimensional cultured human mesenchymal stromal cells in a neuroinflammation model

Spatial Ecology of Translocated and Resident Amur Ratsnakes(Elaphe schrenckii) in Two Mountain Valleys of South Korea

The translocation of snakes has been viewed as a useful tool to augment declining populations and to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts, even though released snakes often exhibit relatively high mortality. We radio-tracked 13 Amur Ratsnakes （Elaphe schrenckii） in the Woraksan National Park in South Korea from July 2008 to May 2009. Two of these snakes were residents, and 11 had been illegally captured in areas remote from the study site and were donated by the park office. During the study period, six of the translocated snakes were lost： two were killed by predators, one died of unknown causes, and the radio signals of three of the snakes were lost. In the field, the ratsnakes laid eggs in early August, moved into hibemacula in late November, and moved away from the hibemacula in mid-April. Compared to the resident snakes, five of the translocated snakes traveled approximately 1.3 times farther per week, and the home ranges of the translocated snakes were three to six times larger than those of the resident snakes. In addition, the translocated snakes were found underground more frequently than the resident snakes. The management recommendations resulting from this study will guide biologists and land use managers in making appropriate decisions regarding release sites and the use of gravid females in the translocation of this endangered ratsnake.

Inverse relationship between bioavailable testosterone and subclinical coronary artery calcification in non-obese Korean men

Although low testosterone levels in men have been associated with high risk for cardiovascular disease, little is known about the association between male sex hormones and subclinical coronary disease in men with apparently low cardiometabolic risk. This study was performed to investigate the association between male sex hormones and subclinical coronary artery calcification measured as coronary calcium score in non-obese Korean men. We examined the relationship of total testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin, bioavai lable testosterone and free testosterone with coronary calcium score in 291 non-obese Korean men （mean age： 52.8--- 9.3 years） not having a history of cardiovascular disease. Using multiple linear regression, we evaluated associations between log （sex hormone） levels and log （coronary calcium score） after adjusting for confounding variables in 105 men with some degree of coronary calcification defined as coronary calcium score ~〉 1. In multiple linear regression analysis, bioavailable testosterone was inversely associated with coronary calcium score （P=0.046） after adjusting for age, body mass index, smoking status, alcohol consumption, regular exercise, mean blood pressure, resting heart rate, C-reactive protein, fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein （HDL） cholesterol, hypertension medication and hyperlipidernia medication, whereas total testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin and free testosterone were not （P=0.674, P=O. 121 and P=O. 102, respectively）. Our findings indicate that bioavailable testosterone is inversely associated with the degree of subclinical coronary artery calcification in non-obese men.

OBJECTIVE The root of Dioscorea batatas,rich in steroidal saponins,alkaloids,tannins,phytosterols,and starch,is an herbal medicine of tonifying qi and nourishing stomach after invigorating spleen with a long history of safe use for treatment of chronic dysentery and weakness of the spleen and stomach in *** study was aimed to investigate the effect of *** on longitudinal bone growth rate in adolescent female *** *** was extracted with 30% EtOH for 3h at 90℃in a reflux *** two groups,we administered a twice daily dosage of *** extract(at 30 and 300mg·kg-1,respectively)per os for 4d,and in a control group,we administered vehicle only under the same *** human growth hormone(rhGH)was subcutaneously injected once *** rats were born at same day(33d-old).On day 3,tetracycline was injected intraperitoneally to form a fluorescent band on the growth *** The bone growth rate in groups administered *** 300mg·kg-1 and rhGH was significantly increased to 343.8±20.7,and 359.6±30.2μm·d-1 respectively from control group,320.7±23.2μm·*** difference was observed in the amount of food intake or mean body weight among all groups during the acclimation or administration *** These results suggest that *** extracts have the potential to induce height increase;however,further research,including clinical trials,is necessary.

Located near the oropharynx, the tonsils are the primary mucosal immune organ. Tonsil tissue is a promising alternative source for the high-yield isolation of adult stem cells, and recent studies have reported the identification and isolation of tonsil-derived stem cells (T-SCs) from waste surgical tissue following tonsillectomies in relatively young donors (i.e., under 10 years old). As such, TSCs offer several advantages, including superior proliferation and a shorter doubling time compared to bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). T-SCs also exhibit multi-lineage differentiation, including mesodermal, endodermal (e.g., hepatocytes and parathyroid-like cells), and even ectodermal cells (e.g., Schwann cells). To this end, numbers of researchers have evaluated the practical use of T-SCs as an alternative source of autologous or allogenic MSCs. In this review, we summarize the details of T-SC isolation and identification and provide an overview of their application in cell therapy and regenerative medicine.
