Objective:To investigate the antimalarial activity of ethanol extract of Aspilin africana (***) ***:The ethanol extract of *** leaf(100-400 mg/kg) was screened for blood schizonticidal effect against chloroquine-sensitive Plasmodium berghei(P. berghei) in mice both in early and established models of antimalarial ***:The leaf extract exhibited significant(P<0.05) antiplasmodial activity in 4-day early infection and in established infection tests with a considerable mean survival time comparable to that of standard drug,chloroquine(10 mg/kg).Conclusions:The findings show thai ethanol extract of *** leaf possesses potent antiplasmodial activity which justify the use in ethnomedicine and can be developed in malaria therapy.

The Kortewegde Vries(KdV)equation represents the propagation of long waves in dispersive media,whereas the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger(CNLS)equation depicts the dynamics of narrow-bandwidth wave packets consisting of short dispersive waves.A model that couples these two equations seems in-triguing for simulating the interaction of long and short waves,which is important in many domains of applied sciences and engineering,and such a system has been investigated in recent *** work uses a modified Sardar sub-equation procedure to secure the soliton-type solutions of the generalized cubic nonlinear Schrödinger-Korteweg-de Vries system of *** various selections of arbitrary parameters in these solutions,the dynamic properties of some acquired solutions are represented graph-ically and *** particular,the dynamics of the bright solitons,dark solitons,mixed bright-dark solitons,W-shaped solitons,M-shaped solitons,periodic waves,and other soliton-type *** re-sults demonstrated that the proposed technique is highly efficient and effective for the aforementioned problems,as well as other nonlinear problems that may arise in the fields of mathematical physics and engineering.

Objective:To evaluate the antiulcer activity of ethanolic leaf extract of Byrsocarpus coccineus,a plant used in herbal medicine for the management of various diseases in ***:Ethanol-,acetylsalicylic acid-,histamine-and water immersion stress-induced gastric ulcers in rats were used to investigate the antiulcer activity of the leaf *** toxicity studies were also carried ***:The ethanolic leaf extract significantly(P<0.05)reduced the ulcer index in all assays used with the maximal antiulcer activity recorded at 400 mg/*** LD_(50)values obtained were greater than 5000 mg/kg in ***:The implication of this finding is that Byrsocarpus coccineus ethanolic leaf extract possesses potent antiulcer activity and the leaf of this plant can serve as a potential source of safe and affordable antiulcer agents.

Geohydraulic Investigation of Aquifer Parameters in Abak, Southern Nigeria

A geophysical investigation was carried out to characterize aquifer parameters and assess the groundwater condition in Abak, southern Nigeria. Vertical electrical sounding (VES) was carried out using Schlumberger configuration in 10 locations within the area. Both manual and computer interpretation of the resistivity data reveals three to four geoelectric units (laterite topsoil, medium-grained sand, coarse-grained sand, and sandy clay sand) which agrees with the lithologic log from existing boreholes. The aquifer layer was identified along the third formation with resistivity values ranging from 1239 - 5719 Ωm and aquifer depth ranging from 30.2 - 54.8 m. The aquifer thickness ranged from 24.2 - 43.7 m. Hydraulic conductivity ranged from 0.1206 m/day - 0.5026 m/day with an average value of 0.29403 m/day. Formation factor ranged from 14.55 - 16.64. Porosity ranged from 15.98% - 22.40%, with an average value of 19.64%. The aquiferous zone falls within the medium/coarse-grained sand. The aquifer is shallow, unconfined, and prolific with a little overburden formation of 13.5 m. The area shows good prospects for groundwater development.

Objective:To investigate the the analgesic,anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activities of the methanolic leaf extract of Maerua crassifolia in mice and ***:Acetic acid-induced writhing and tail immersion methods were used to assess analgesic activity,while xylene and carrageenan-induced paw oedema methods were used to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of the leaf *** and amphetamine-induced pyrexia were used to investigate the antipyretic *** phytochemical analysis and oral acute toxicity of the methanolic leaf extract of Maerua crassifolia were also ***:The leaf extract(100,200,and 400 mg/kg)showed a dose dependent and significant(P<0.05)inhibition of pain in acetic acid-induced writhing and tail immersion *** extract also produced significant(P<0.05)anti-inflammatory activity in both paradigms.A significant(P<0.05)reduction in hyperpyrexia was also observed with the leaf *** phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids,flavonoids,terpenoids,tannins,steroids,resins,saponins and cardiac *** oral median lethal dose of the leaf extract was estimated to be greater than 5000 mg/kg in ***:The findings confirmed its ethnomedical use in the treatment of pains and feverish conditions.

Heavy Metal Levels and Ecological Risk in Crude Oil-Contaminated Soils from Okpare-Olomu, Niger Delta, Nigeria

Crude oil spills have inflicted extensive disruption upon the Niger Delta ecosystem, resulting in crop loss and severe environmental damage. Such spills exacerbate heavy metal concentration within soil due to the presence of metallic ions. The Okpare-Olomu community has borne the brunt of crude oil pollution from illicit bunkering, sabotage, and equipment malfunction. This study targets an evaluation of ecological hazards linked to heavy metals (HMs) in crude oil impacted agriculturally soils within Okpare-Olomu in Ughelli South LGA of Delta State. In this study, 24 topsoil samples were obtained from areas affected by crude oil pollution;the heavy metal content was evaluated through atomic absorption spectrometry. The concentration ranges for HMs (mg/kg) in soil were: 24.1 - 23,174 (Cu);0.54 - 37.1 (Cd);9.05 - 54 (Cr);12 - 174 (Ni);18.5 - 8611 (Pb);and 148 - 9078 (Zn) at a soil depth of 0 - 15 cm. Notably, metal concentrations were recorded to be above permissible World Health Organization limits. Predominantly, Zn and Pb recorded higher heavy metal concentration when compared to other heavy metals analysed, notably at sampling points PT7 through PT24. Zinc and Pb contamination exhibited highly significant contamination factors, and contamination severity was evidenced across all sample points, signifying a grave risk level. Pollution load indices indicated pervasive extreme pollution levels. Geoaccumulation indices signaled moderate to strong pollution, mainly by Pb and Zn. Ecological risk assessments revealed variable levels of heavy metal contamination, from low to very high, with potential ecological risk reflecting markedly elevated levels. This study underscores the imperative for soil remediation to rectify ecological imbalances in agriculturally affected soil constituents.

Background: Malaria and typhoid have remained major infectious tropical diseases. Clinically, whenever there is severe malaria, cough is always an associating symptom owing to typhoid infection arising from poor hygiene in respect to drinking water and food. There is a strong association between human blood group and disease. Residual malaria transmission, effect of climate change on malaria vector composition, environmental management targeted at malaria breeding control as an intervention strategy are areas of interest to WHO in malaria control in Sub-saharan Africa. A body of data is been built on susceptibility of human blood groups to malaria, HIV and HBV and presently malaria and typhoid. If climate change warrants a change in composition of vectors and as well resistance to ACT therapy, the susceptibility or vulnerability of the human blood group is also called to question. The link between susceptibility of human blood group to malaria and typhoid has not been previously investigated. Purpose: The present study assesses the genetic disposition (susceptibility of human blood groups and abo analysis) to malaria and typhoid infections. Patients and Methods: One hundred (100) patients were screened for malaria and typhoid infections in a tertiary health facility—His glory hospital Lagos, Nigeria. Blood samples were collected by venu-puncture from 53 females and 47 males adults aged between 15 – 47 years, who were infected either singly or coinfected with malaria and typhoid. Microscopic detection of P. falciparum, widal serological technique for salmonella antibody presence and genotypic determination were all done using standard WHO methods. Human material or data were analyzed or performed in accordance with the declaration of Helsinki (2000).
