In addition to sperm,some accessory substances transferred to females during copulation act as nuptial gifts by passing on valuable nutrients in many insect *** nutritional status of the males can thus have a great effect on the mating behavior,fecundity and even the longevity of ***,little is know. about the effect of male nutritional status on the female reproductive traits in migratory insect species,particularly w.en females experience nutrient shortage and have to choose betw.en reproduction and ***,Cnaphalocrocis medinalis,a migratory rice pest in Asia,w.s studied to explore this *** results show.d that in male moths fed w.th honey solution,their gonads had higher energy content than gonads of starved males,resulting in increased energy content of the bursa copulatrix of females after mating w.th fed *** females show.d increased mating frequency,fecundity and longevity compared to females mating w.th starved males,indicating that male moths deliver nuptial gifts to females and improve their reproductive ***,w.en females w.re starved,only about 45%mated,w.th just a single copulation,regardless of male nutritional *** females show.d low.r fecundity,and a longer pre-oviposition period(indicating a greater propensity to migrate),compared to fed ***,copulation still significantly extended their *** results suggest that starved females invest in migration to escape deteriorating habitats,rather than investing the nuptial gift to increased *** results further our understanding of the reproductive adaptability of migratory insects under conditions of food stress.

Quaternary Ge-Sb-Se-Te chalcogenide thin films w.re fabricated by rf magnetron sputtering from Ge_(19)Sb_(17)Se_(64-x)Te_(x)(x=5,10,15,20)sputtering targets in order to select appropriate compositions for infrared sensor and optical nonlinear *** influence of chemical composition and deposition parameters on the optical properties,structure and w.ttability w.s thus *** amorphous thin films seem to be constituted by selenide entities that can include tellurium atoms in variable proportion such as[GeSe_(4-x)Te_(x)]and[SbSe_(3-x)Te_(x)](x=0,1,2)and Ge(Sb)-Ge(Sb)bonds according to Raman *** angle measurements of the thin films show.d values of 68e71for w.ter and their surface energies in the range of~36e39 mJ$m-2 seem suitable for surface functionalization required for photonic sensor ***,the maximum nonlinearity at the telecom w.velength w.th respect to the highest figure of merit value w.s found for the thin film w.th composition Ge_(19)Sb_(17)Se56Te8 having nonlinear refractive index of 28×10^(-18) m2·w.(-1).Due to their low.optical bandgap energies,they may find their full interest for nonlinear optics in the mid-infrared *** IR transparency in combination w.th high(non)linear refractive indices make these materials attractive in the field of midIR sensing and optical nonlinear devices.

Modeling the Sediment Fill of the Upper Troy Pre-Glacial Bedrock Valley, McHenry County, Illinois, USA

The Troy Bedrock Valley (TBV) and its tributary valleys are the principal pre-glacial drainage in southern w.sconsin and northern Illinois, USA. This study focused on the headw.ters of a tributary that occurs in McHenry County, IL. Drilling, geophysical surveys, and the analysis of existing geologic and w.ter w.ll data w.re used to determine the lithologic and geometric characteristics of the sediments that fill the paleovalley. A 3D geologic model of these sediments w.s then developed in Petrel. More than 65 m of Quaternary sediments filled the paleovalley. The model domain covers approximately 30 km2. The valley drains to the w.st and meanders, w.ich is distinct from the straight course of the overlying modern Kishw.ukee River. The sediments that filled the valley w.re subdivided into five units. These units include Illinois-age Glasford Formation coarse-grained proglacial outw.sh and alluvial deposits (GS2, GS1) and fine-grained lacustrine and diamicton deposits (G2 and G1). The w.sconsin-age Henry Formation sand and gravel cap the valley fill, and Cahokia alluvium buries everything.

Trisubstituted Aryl Cyclohexanecarboxylates (TACC): A Simple, New.Molecular Scaffold for Antibiotics Design

A new.class of potential antibacterial agents has been synthesized on a new.molecular scaffold of cyclohexane carboxylate. w. have tagged this new.class of compounds TACCs (Trisubstituted Aryl Cyclohexanecarboxylate). These new.molecules are structural analogues of an Activators of Self-Compartmentalizing Proteases 4 and 5 (ACP 4 and 5), and w.re synthesized to circumvent the drug-like property (drug-ability) challenges and liability noted in ACP 4 and 5. A pseudo-Robinson annulation protocol w.s used to furnish this new.class of potential antibiotics. Structure-activity relationship (SAR) study w.s done to identify the pharmacophore(s) in this molecular scaffold. A selection of these compounds w.s used in our preliminary antibacterial inhibitory activities’ studies on Bacillus mycoides and Bacillus subtilis. These preliminary studies show.that the TACCs exhibited equal, and in some cases better, antibacterial activity than ACP 4 and 5.

The polymer surface relaxation in thin films has been a long debating issue. w. report a new.method on studying surface relaxation behaviors of polymer thin films on a solid substrate. This method involved utilizing a rubbed polyimide surface w.th a pretilting angle in a liquid crystalline cell. Due to the surface alignment, the liquid crystals w.re aligned along the rubbing direction. During heating the liquid crystalline cell, w. continuously monitored the change of orientation of the liquid crystals. It is understood that at a temperature w.ere the orientation of liquid crystal is lost, the surface relaxation on the glass substrate takes place to lose the polyimide surface orientation. It w.s found that the relaxation temperature at w.ich the liquid crystals lose their orientation depends on the film thickness of the polyimide. A quantitative linear relationship betw.en the relaxation temperature and reciprocal of the film thickness can be observed. Furthermore, different topologies of the rubbed and relaxed thin films w.re amplified using the polyethylene decoration method and observed using atomic force microscopy.

Role of Multiple High-Capacity Irrigation w.lls on a Surficial Sand and Gravel Aquifer

w.thin McHenry County, IL, the fastest grow.ng county in Illinois, groundw.ter is used for 100% of the w.ter needs. Concerns over w.ter resources have prompted the investigation of the surficial sand and gravel aquifers of the county. w.ile the eastern portion of the county is urbanizing, the w.stern portion remains devoted to agriculture. High-capacity irrigation w.lls screened w.thin the surficial sand and gravel aquifer are used for crop production. To assess the impacts of the irrigation w.lls on the aquifer, a groundw.ter flow.model w.s developed to examine five different scenarios reflecting drought conditions and increased pumping. Results show.that the surficial sand and gravel aquifer is capable of meeting current w.ter demands even if recharge is decreased 20% and pumping is increased 20%. The additional loss of discharge and increases in pumping result in head differences throughout the aquifer.
