Ecuador has among its foods a number of potatoes and tubers that are not only nutritious, but are also attributed properties as coadjutant in the treatment of different illnesses. The objective of this study was to conduct a comparative study of the mashua tuber (Tropaeolum tuberosum spp tuberosum Ruíz & Pavón, Kuntze), in its three pink, yellow and black varieties, by comparing the physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activity. The comparative study was carried out on tubers obtained in the province of Pichincha, Quito-Ecuador. The physicochemical parameters were determined by the identification of the secondary metabolites present in the hydroalcoholic extracts, the quantification of phenols and flavonoids, and the characterization of the extracts by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and the antioxidant activity by three test methods. As a result, significant differences were found between the three varieties studied.

Leachate Treatment by Heterogeneous Fenton on an Activated Carbon Substrate with Fe(II) Impregnated

Organic components contained in leachates resulting from decomposition of waste are difficult to degrade. They also contain inorganic components, as nitrogen compounds, phosphates, and chlorides, also Ca, Mg, K, and heavy metals. Leachate volume and its composition vary depending on biogeochemistry of type site of deposited residues, and age of sanitary landfill. In this study, it conducted a Heterogeneous Fenton, advanced oxidation process using lignitic activated carbon as solid matrix, with and without Fe2+ impregnation, for the treatment of leachate (Le) obtained from a sanitary landfill located in the city of Mérida, Yucatan, Mexico. In this study was determined the efficiency of Heterogeneous Fenton process for to remove Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Color from crude leachates using mesoporous activated carbon, previously treated with HCl, HnO3, and a mixture of both acids and impregnated with Fe2+ on actived carbon. It was studied of activated carbon behavior previously treated with each acid and the mixture, washed with hot water and impregnated with Fe2+ using FeCl2.4H2O and FeSO4·7H2O salts. For leachate treatment by Heterogeneous Fenton reaction, it was selected carbon pretreatment with HCl acid and impregnation with FeSO4·7H2O. Treatment with HCl presented the advantage of not prematurely oxidize to Fe2+. In order to select an optimal dose and achieve an adequate concentration of HO· radicals dosage tests was carried out H2O2. By selecting the indicated procedure, it was obtained more than 80% performance in removing COD and Color from crude leachate. The confidence level for the selected variables (acids and impregnation) was determined by a statistical analyzes using the Centurion XVII software. Finally, mesoporous lignitic carbon used in this study was found to be adequate for this oxidation process, and this method presented the advantage of not producing sludge as in traditional Fenton reaction.

We report a 3-year-old girl suffering from RothmundThomson Syndrome (RTS). The patient at birth had multiplex anomalies: poikilodermatous rash, sceletal abnormalities: palatoschisis, micrognathi, aplasia radii, hypoplastic right and left thenar and thumbs, pesequinus on both site, ectopy renis. The patient in the later ages was detected dental malformation, facial dysmorfism. At the age 3, she had lasion in her muscle. After biopsy, histological examination showed cutan T-cell lymphoma. The patient is the first case who had cutan T-cell lymphoma associated with RTS in this young age.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DnA) or oligonucleotides, can be modified in several ways as chemical degradation by electrophilic reaction, attack of radicals, hydrolytic deamination or oxidative damage caused by ionizing radiation. This work discussed these degradation mechanisms, determining the effects on these biomolecules. The actual knowledge about DnA damages only permits partial enzymatic repair treatments.

In this paper it is presented the results of advanced oxidation of leachates from a technified sanitary landfill located in the State of Querétaro, Mexico. One characteristic of already stabilized leachates from sanitary landfills like this case, is their difficult degradation, mainly because the organic matter contained is recalcitrant. For the samples collect, four sites were selected, where three points per site were sampled, measuring at each site the parameters: temperature, pH, conductivity, redox potential (ORP) and dissolved oxygen (DO) and leachate samples were collected. On the other hand, the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of crude leachates, leachates acidified and leachates oxidized by Fenton reagent and Ozone-UV combined were analyzed. COD was used to monitor the degradation kinetics. With the results, the ArcGIS software was applied to study the distribution of temperature, dissolved oxygen and COD mainly in the leachate lagoon. For the application of Fenton reagent in the crude leachate oxidation, the pH was first adjusted and Fe2+/H2O2 ratio was optimized. The efficiency of Ozone-UV treatments was studied through COD degradation kinetics. The graphs of in (Ci/Co) vs time, showed that the kinetic processes are of order one, with very acceptable regression coefficients (R2) and extraordinarily similar speed constants (K). With Fenton oxidation, the highest percentage of COD degradation was achieved and with Ozone-UV oxidation, it was possible to practically degrade all the COD.
