Level of Adherence to Cytotoxic Drugs by Breast Cancer Patients’ in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital

Background: Breast cancer is one of the most common malignant diseases in women and adjuvant combination chemotherapy has been shown to reduce mortality from this disease. Adherence to medical treatment is a multifaceted issue that can substantially alter the outcomes of therapy. Patient non-adherence to chemotherapy is the ultimate barrier to the treatment effectiveness. Objective: This study was carried out to determine the relationship between cancer chemotherapy adherence and breast cancer staging, patient’s perception of cancer care and patient’s socio-demographic characteristics. Material and method: This was a cross sectional study selection of respondents and was based on simple random sampling technique, 184 patients were interviewed and data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire to obtain socio-demographic data, adherence data, and facility-related information. Results: There was a significant association between marital status and non-adherence (P?= 0.013). Both separated and single subjects had higher proportion of non-adherence compared with married subjects. Analysis of perception of chemotherapy care revealed a significant association between the satisfaction score and non-adherence, with non-adherent patients showing higher scores or being less satisfied. The quality of service (P?= 0.0052);rating of needs been met (P?= 0.0079);rating on whether the services helped the subject (P?= 0.0405);rating on the general satisfaction of the services provided (P?= 0.0115);and rating on whether subject would seek help again (P?= 0.0320) all had a significant association with non-adherence. Conclusion: The awareness of oncologist and patient of the problem of non-adherence and communication regarding the importance of adherence to therapy may improve health outcomes.

Curcumin is a natural polyphenol that is used in various traditional ***,its inherent properties,such as its rapid degradation and metabolism,low bioavailability,and short half-life,are serious problems that must be *** this end,a drug carrier incorporating natural magnetic cores in a zeolite framework was developed and applied to the loading of curcumin in ethanol *** this system,curcumin is encapsulated in a zeolite Na(ZNA)magnetic core–shell structure(Fe@Si/ZNA),which can be easily synthesized using an in situ *** of Fe_(3)O_(4) nanoparticles was carried out from natural materials using a co-precipitation *** of the prepared magnetic core–shell structures and composites was carried out using vibrating-sample magnetometery,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,transmission electron microscopy,and x-ray *** cumulative loading of curcumin in the ZNA composite with 9%nanoparticles was found to reach 90.70%with a relatively long half-life of 32.49 *** tests of curcumin loading in the composite showed that adding magnetic particles to the zeolite framework also increased the stability of the composite *** kinetics and isotherm studies also found that the system follows the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models.

Microbial fuel cell(MFC) is an advanced bioelectrochemical technique that can utilize biomass materials in the process of simultaneously generating electricity and biodegrading or bio transforming toxic pollutants from wastewater. The overall performance of the system is largely dependent on the efficiency of the anode electrode to enhance electron transportation. Furthermore, the anode electrode has a significant impact on the overall cost of MFC setup. Hence, the need to explore research focused towards developing cost-effective material as anode in MFC. This material must also have favourable properties for electron transportation. Graphene oxide(GO) derivatives and its modification with nanomaterials have been identified as a viable anode material. Herein, we discussed an economically effective strategy for the synthesis of graphene derivatives from waste biomass materials and its subsequent fabrication into anode electrode for MFC applications. This review article offers a promising approach towards replacing commercial graphene materials with biomass-derived graphene derivatives in a view to achieve a sustainable and commercialized MFC.

Sex Determination Using Mandibular Canine among Northeastern Nigerian Population

Establishing a person’s identity is important for both legal and humanitarian *** determination is a key characteristic used in the identification of a deceased *** aim of this study was to determine sex by using mandibular canines among individuals in the Northeastern Nigerian *** hundred and eight individuals(102 men and 106 women)participated in this *** mesiodistal widths of the mandibular canines and intercanine distances were measured using a vernier caliper and a ***‑wise logistic regression analyses were used to determine sex based on mandibular *** participants had significantly higher mandibular mesiodistal width than female ***,the canine index was significantly higher in male participants than in female *** mesiodistal width of the left mandibular canine exhibited the highest sexual dimorphism(9.78%)and was the best characteristic for use in determining sex,with an accuracy of 75%.Among the Northwestern Nigerian population,sex can be most accurately determined using the mesiodistal width of the left mandibular canine.

Interference Mitigation MAC Protocol for Cognitive Radio Networks

The growing demand for wireless services coupled with the limited availability of suitable electromagnetic spectrum is increasing the need for more efficient RF spectrum utilization. Spectrum allocated to TV operators can potentially be shared by wireless data services, either when the primary service is switched off or by exploiting spatial reuse opportunities. This paper describes a dynamic spectrum access scheme for use in the TV bands which uses cognitive radio techniques to determine the spectrum availability. The approach allows secondary users (SU) to operate in the presence of the primary users (PU) and the OPNET simulation and modelling software has been used to model the performance of the scheme. An analysis of the results shows that the proposed scheme protects the primary users from harmful interference from the secondary users. In comparison with the 802.11 MAC protocol, the scheme improves spectrum utilization by about 27% while limiting the interference imposed on the primary receiver.

A study on the effectiveness of intravenous tramadol in the management of severe traumatic pain in emergency department

Introduction:Patients with pain contribute to 60%-70% of emergency department(ED)attendance and the tramadol is among analgesic of choice in ***,the use of intravenous tramadol is limited to moderate pain intensity because of its weak opiod agonist *** conducted a study to examine the effectiveness of intravenous tramadol among patients who suffer from severe traumatic ***:In this prospective study,eligible patients received a loading dose of intravenous tramadol(2mg/kg).If visual analogue score(VAS)more than 30 mm after the loading dose,intermittent bolus intravenous tramadol 20mg will be administered every 10 *** 30 minutes of study,rescue medication(*** or pethidine)will be provided to those patients with VAS more than 30 *** score,vital signs and side effects were recorded for every 10 minutesResults:Forty-seven patients who suffered from fracture and soft tissue injury were *** median VAS score on presentation and at 30 minutes was 90 mm 20 mm *** median total dose of IV tramadol received by the patients at 30 minutes was 150 mg(IQR=34.0).There was a significant change in medium pain score at 10,20 and 30 minutes treatment(P<0.001).Vital signs were within normal range throughout the study *** 66.1% of them had side effects of *** common side effects were sleepiness(75.0%)and dizziness(56.3%).Conclusion:The intravenous tramadol is a safe and effective analgesia in severe traumatic patients if an initial and intermittent dose is given adequately.

Petroleum supplies a large portion of the world’s energy, thereby driving industrial civilization. It remains an important factor in dictating market prices of diverse products and services. Distillation of crude oil is a common fractionation method of petroleum producing desirable products, such as automotive fuel and kerosene. Conventional distillation has been the current fractionation process for decades, producing distillates of interest and is conducted without any involvement of biological materials. The process involves tremendous amount of thermal energy and requiring a long time. This research offers an improved distillation performance and yield. A small amount of rhamnolipid produced from a microbial culture Pseudomonas aeruginosa USM-AR2, is added and mixed thoroughly with the crude oil prior to distillation. This results in a drastic reduction in distillation time without affecting or reducing the quality of the distillate. The pretreatment accelerates the emulsification and biodegradation process by decreasing surface tension and viscosity of oil, which in turn resulted in the shorter distillation times. Reducing the distillation times translates to energy and cost savings in producing petroleum products. Since oil prices affect many other industries, this discovery will have a great impact on the economy.
