Hepatic fat quantification magnetic resonance for monitoring treatment response in pediatric nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

Patients who had undergone Kasai operations for biliary atresia were selected for the Kasai group, and patients with normal livers and spleens were selected for the control group. Two-dimensional spin-echo echoplanar MRE acquisition centered on the liver, with a pneumatic driver at 60 Hz and a low amplitude, was performed to obtain hepatic and splenic stiffness values. AIM To evaluate the correlation between intravoxel incoherent motion(IVIM) diffusion-weighted imaging(DWI) parameters and the degree of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in *** This retrospective study was approved by the institutional review board. The children(≤ 18 years) who underwent liver IVIM DWI with 8 b-values under the suspicion of hepatic steatosis or fibrosis from February 2013 to November 2016 were included. The slow diffusion coefficient(D), fast diffusion coefficient(D*), perfusion fraction(f), and apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC) were measured. The D* values were lower in the FIB group compared with those of the normal(P = 0.015) and FAT(P = 0.003) groups. The f values were lower in the FIB group compared with the FAT group(P = 0.001). In multivariate analyses, PDFF value was positively correlated with f value(β = 3.194, P < 0.001), and MRE value was negatively correlated with D* value(β =-7.031, P = 0.032). Assessing the Efficacy of Two Indirect Methods for Quantifying Canopy Variables Associated with the Interception Loss of Rainfall in Temperate Hardwood Forests

Forest canopy water storage (S), direct throughfall fraction (p) and mean evaporation rate to mean rainfall intensity ratio (E/R) vary between storms and seasonally. Typically, researchers only quantify the mean growing and dormant season values of S, p and E/R for deciduous forests, thereby ignoring seasonal changes S, p and E/R .Past researchers adapted the mean method, which is usually used to estimate S, p and E/R on an annual or seasonal basis, to estimate the same canopy variables on a per storm basis (individual storm (IS) method). The disadvantage of the IS method is that it requires more expensive equipment and the calculation of the canopy variables is more labor intensive relative to the mean method. The goal of this study was to explore the use of the IS method for northern hardwood forests and to determine whether estimates of S, p and E/R derived by the IS method produce more accurate estimates of rainfall interception loss (In) using the Gash model relative to estimates derived by the mean method. The IS method estimated that S increased from approximately 0.11 mm in the early spring to 1.2 mm in the summer and then declined to 0.24 mm after fall senescence. Direct throughfall decreased from 0.4 in the early spring to 0.11 in the summer, and then increased to 0.4 after leaf senescence. When measurement period estimates of p, S and E/R derived by the IS and mean methods were applied to the Gash model, the modeled estimates of In differed from the measured values by 14.0 mm and 1.3 mm, respectively. Therefore, because the mean method provided more accurate estimates of In, the extra effort and expense required by the IS method is not advantageous for studies in northern hardwood forests that only need to model annual or seasonal estimates of In.

Aconitine(ACO) is known for causing lethal ventricular tachyarrhythmias. While ACO induced cardiac Na channel opening during repolarization has long been documented in animal cardiac myocytes, the cellular effect of ACO in human remains unexplored. This study aimed to assess the proarrhythmic effects of ACO in human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes(hi PSC-CMs) and explore the underlying mechanism. Current-clamping assay demonstrated that ACO concentration-dependently(0.3 3.0 μM) shortened the action potentials(AP) durations(APD) in ventricular-like hi PSC-CMs by > 40%. Laser-scanning confocal calcium imaging analysis showed that ACO markedly decreased the duration and amplitude of [Ca]i transients. In both assays, the beating frequencies of ACOtreated hi PSC-CMs increased 60% 100%. By voltage-clamping assay, ACO was found to markedly reduce the L-type calcium channel(LTCC) channel currents(ICa,L) in hi PSC-CMs associated with a positive-shift of activation and a negative shift of inactivation, whereas the peak, late and window Na currents(INa) and the rapid component of the delayed rectifier potassium current(Ikr) remained unaffected. Effects of ACO on [Ca]i transients and ICa,L were partially abolished by Bay K-8644, a LTCC agonist. Further, the effects of ACO on ICa,L, INa and IKr were validated in heterologous expression systems by automated voltage-clamping. In summary, our data demonstrated strong proarrhythmic effects of ACO in human cardiomyocytes potentially mediated by LTCC inhibition. Our findings may facilitate the development of targeted therapies for ACO-induced fatal arrhythmia.

New mesomorphic benzothiazol derivatives: Synthesis and characterization

In this paper, the synthesis of new mesomorphic benzothiazolyl derivatives, 6-ethoxy-2-[4-（4- alkyloxybenzoyloxy）benzylidenamino]benzothiazoles, is presented. The structures of the title compounds were elucidated using spectroscopic techniques, such as FT-IR, NMR （1H and 13C）, elemental analysis and El-MS. The mesomorphic behaviours of these compounds were determined by differential scanning calorimetric and polarizing optical microscopic techniques. Compounds exhibited nematic and tilted smectic phases upon heating from crystal phase. An obvious odd-even effect was observed in this homologous series.

We present a brief review about recent results regarding carbon nanotube （CNT）-based chemical and biomolecular sensors. For the fabrication of CNT-based sensors, devices containing CNT channels between two metal electrodes are first fabricated usually via chemical vapor deposition （CVD） process or ＂surface programmed assembly＂ method. Then, the CNT surfaces are often functionalized to enhance the selectivity of the sensors. Using this process, highly-sensitive CNT-based sensors can be fabricated for the selective detection of various chemical and biological molecules such as hydrogen, ammonia, carbon monoxide, chlorine gas, DNA, glucose, alcohol, and proteins.
