AIM： To determine intestinal permeability, the serum tumor necrosis factor （TNF）-α level and urine nitric oxide （NO） metabolites are altered in liver cirrhosis （LC） with or without ascites. METhODS： Fifty-three patients with LC and 26 healthy control subjects were enrolled in the study. The intestinal permeability value is expressed as the percentage of polyethylene glycol （PEG） 400 and 3350 retrieval in 8-h urine samples as determined by high performance liquid chromatography. Serum TNF-α concentrations and urine NO metabolites were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay （ELISA） and Greiss reaction method, respectively. RESULTS： The intestinal permeability index wassignificantly higher in patients with LC with ascites than in healthy control subjects or patients with LC without ascites （0.88 ± 0.12 vs 0.52 ± 0.05 or 0.53 ± 0.03, P 〈 0.05） and correlated with urine nitrite excretion （r = 0.98）. Interestingly, the serum TNF-α concentration was significantly higher in LC without ascites than in control subjects or in LC with ascites （198.9 ± 55.8 pg/mL vs 40.9 ± 12.3 pg/mL or 32.1 ± 13.3 pg/mL, P 〈 0.05）. Urine nitrite excretion was significantly higher in LC with ascites than in the control subjects or in LC without ascites（ 1170.9± 28.7 μmol/L vs 903.1 ± 55.1 μmol/L or 956.7 ± 47.7 μmol/L, P 〈 0.05）. COMCLUSIOM： Increased intestinal macromolecular permeability and NO is probably of importance in the pathophysiology and progression of LC with ascites, but the serum TNF-α concentration was not related to LC with ascites.

Background:Activated hepatic stellate cells(hSCs)are closely involved in the initiation,perpetuation,and resolution of liver ***-inflammatory cytokine levels are positively correlated with the transition from liver injury to fibrogenesis and contribute to hSC pathophysiology in liver ***:In this study,we investigated the effect of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin(IL)-1βon the proliferation and signaling pathways involved in fibrogenesis in LX-2 cells,an hSC cell line,using western blotting and cell proliferation ***:IL-1βincreased the proliferation rate andα-smooth muscle actin(SMA)expression of LX-2 cells in a dose-dependent *** 1 h after IL-1βtreatment,c-Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK),p38,and nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB)signaling was activated in LX-2 ***,protein kinase B(AKT)phosphorylation and an increase inα-SMA expression were observed in LX-2 *** inhibitor of JNK,p38,or NF-κB decreased cell proliferation,AKT phosphorylation,andα-SMA expression in IL-1β-treated LX-2 ***:These results indicate that JNK,p38,and NF-κB signals converge at AKT phosphorylation,leading to LX-2 activation by IL-1β.Therefore,the AKT signaling pathway can be used as a target for alleviating liver fibrosis by the inflammatory cytokine IL-1β.

The electrical properties and ageing behavior of the rare earths （Pr6O11-Er2O3-Y2O3）-doped ZnO varistor ceramics were systematically investigated at sintering temperature range of 1335-1350°C. With an increase in the sintering temperature, the sintered density increased from 5.41 to 5.64g/cm3 and the average grain size increased from 5.8 to 7.9μm. The varistor properties and ageing behavior were significantly affected by small sintering temperature range of 1335-1350°C. The breakdown field noticeably decreased from 5767 to 3628V/cm with an increase in the sintering temperature. The varistor ceramics exhibited the highest nonlinear coefficient （43.2） at the sintering temperature of 1340°C. The varistor ceramics sintered at 1350°C exhibited a surprisingly excellent stability by exhibiting 0.3% in the variation rate of the breakdown field and 0.3% in the variation rate of the nonlinear coefficient for ageing stress of 0.95 E1mA/150°C/24 h.

AIM To evaluate portal vein(PV) stenosis and stent patency after hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, using abdominal computed tomography(CT).METhODS Percutaneous portal venous stenting was attempted in 22 patients with significant PV stenosis(> 50%)-after hepatobiliary or pancreatic surgery- diagnosed by abdominal CT. Stents were placed in various stenotic lesions after percutaneous transhepatic portography. Pressure gradient across the stenotic segment was measured in 14 patients. Stents were placed when the pressure gradient across the stenotic segment was > 5 mm hg or PV stenosis was > 50%, as observed on transhepatic portography. Patients underwent followup abdominal CT and technical and clinical success, complications, and stent patency were *** Stent placement was successful in 21 patients(technical success rate: 95.5%). Stents were positioned through the main PV and superior mesenteric vein(n = 13), main PV(n = 2), right and main PV(n = 1), left and main PV(n = 4), or main PV and splenic vein(n = 1). Patients showed no complications after stent placement. The time between procedure and final follow-up CT was 41-761 d(mean: 374.5 d). Twenty stents remained patent during the entire follow-up. Stent obstruction-caused by invasion of the PV stent by a recurrent tumor- was observed in 1 patient in a follow-up CT performed after 155 d after the procedure. The cumulative stent patency rate was 95.7%. Small in-stent low-density areas were found in 11(55%) patients; however, during successive follow-up CT, the extent of these areas had *** Percutaneous transhepatic stent placement can be safe and effective in cases of PV stenosis after hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery. Stents show excellent patency in follow-up abdominal CT, despite development of small in-stent low-density areas.

AIM:To track intravascularly transplanted mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) labeled with superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in an experimental rabbit model of hepatic ***:human MSCs labeled with FDA-approved SPIO particles (Feridex) were transplanted via the mes-enteric vein into rabbits (n=16) with carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic *** resonance (MR) examinations were performed with a 3.0 T clinical scanner immediately before and 2 h and 1,3,and 7 d after *** intensity (SI) changes on T2weighted MRI were measured,and correlation between MR findings and histomorphologic findings was also ***:SI on T2-weighted MRI decreased significantly in the liver 2 h after injection of human MSCs and returned gradually to the levels found before injection in 7 *** in SI in the liver at 2 h,1,3,and 7 d were 41.87% ± 9.63%,10.42% ± 4.3%,5.12% ± 1.9%,3.75% ± 1.2%,respectively (P histologic analyses confirmed the presence of MSCs in the liver,localized mainly in the sinusoids in early period (2 h and 1 d) and concentrated to the border zone in late period (3 and 7 d).The number of iron-positive cells in the liver at 2 h and on 1,3 and 7 d after transplantation was 29.2 ± 4.8,10.1 ± 3.7,6.7 ± 2.2,and 5.8 ± 2.1,respectively (P=0.013).CONCLUSION:Intravascularly injected SPIO-labeled MSCs in an experimental rabbit model of hepatic failure can be detected and followed with MRI.

The influence of the dehydration by metal oxides on the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate （DMC） via oxidative carbonylation of methanol was studied. A Cu/Y-zeolite catalyst was prepared by the ion exchange method from CuCl2.2h2O and the commercial Nh4-form of the Y type zeolite, The catalyst was characterized by X-ray fluorescence （XRF）, N2 adsorption （BET method）, X-ray diffraction （XRD）, and temperature-programmed de- sorption of ammonia （Nh3-TPD） to evaluate its Cu and Cl content, surface area, structure, and acidity. Reaction tests were carried out using an autoclave （batch reactor） for 18 h at 403 K and 5.5 MPa （2Ch3Oh ＋ 1/2O2 ＋ CO （Ch3O）2CO ＋ h2O）. The influence of various dehydrating agents （ZnO, MgO, and CaO） was examined with the aim of increasing the methanol conversion （XMeOh, MeOh conversion）. The MeOh conversion increased upon addition of metal oxides in the order CaO 〉〉 MgO 〉 ZnO, with the DMC selectivity （SDMC） following the order MgO 〉 CaO 〉 ZnO. The catalysts and dehydrating agents were characterized before and after the oxidative carbonylation of methanol by thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric （TG/DTG）, and XRD to con- firm that the dehydration reaction occurred via the metal oxide （MO ＋ h2O →M（Oh）2）. The MeOh conversion increased from 8.7% to 14.6% and DMC selectivity increased from 39.0% to 53.1%, when using the dehydrating azent CaO.

The microstructural evolution and underlying grain growth mechanism of a{1012}-twin-containing Mg alloy during annealing are investigated through quasi in situ electron backscatter diffraction measurements of a rolled AZ31 alloy subjected to precompression along the rolling direction(RD).The precompressed material shows a partially twinned structure consisting of a twinned region and a residual matrix region,and this structure changes to an almost twin-free structure consisting of grown grains with serrated grain boundaries in twinand matrix-originated regions after annealing at 250℃ for 1 *** addition,the average grain size almost doubles and the internal strain energy decreases significantly after *** microstructural variations are induced mainly by grain growth through the strain-induced migration of high-angle grain boundaries without the movement of twin *** twinned region of the precompressed material has higher stored strain energy than the residual matrix region because the crystallographic orientation of the former region is favorable for basal slip and because of the occurrence of the dislocation transmutation reaction in the *** reducing the total strain energy accumulated in the precompressed material,the residual matrix region—having lower stored strain energy—preferentially grows while consuming the twinned regions formed in the surrounding grains during *** a result,the area fraction of grains with a matrix texture increases whereas that of grains with a twin texture decreases after *** twin texture intensity increases significantly and this texture becomes more concentrated along the RD because the highly RD oriented twins tend to grow during annealing on account of their fairly low stored strain energy.
