Training birdsong recognition using virtual reality

Background In mega-biodiverse environments,where different species are more likely to be heard than seen,species monitoring is generally performed using bioacoustics ***,since bird vocalizations are reasonable estimators of biodiversity,their monitoring is of great importance in the formulation of conservation ***,birdsong recognition is an arduous task that requires dedicated training in order to achieve mastery,which is costly in terms of time and money due to the lack of accessibility of relevant information in field trips or even specialized *** technology based on virtual reality(VR)and spatial audio may improve species monitoring by enhancing information accessibility,interaction,and user *** This study used spatial audio,a Bluetooth controller,and a head-mounted display(HMD)to conduct an immersive training experience in *** moved inside a virtual world using a Bluetooth controller,while their task was to recognize targeted *** measured the accuracy of recognition and user engagement according to the User Engagement *** The experimental results revealed significantly higher engagement and accuracy for participants in the VR-based training system than in a traditional computer-based training *** four dimensions of the user engagement scale received high ratings from the participants,suggesting that VR-based training provides a motivating and attractive environment for learning demanding tasks through appropriate design,exploiting the sensory system,and virtual reality *** The accuracy and engagement of the VR-based training system were significantly high when tested against traditional *** research will focus on developing a variety of realistic ecosystems and their associated birds to increase the information on newer bird species within the training ***,the proposed VR-based training system must be tested with ad

Implementation of a High-Risk Outpatient Clinic for Children with Complex Congenital Heart Disease in a Reference Service in Brazil

Background:Children with congenital heart disease(CHD),even after surgical approaches,and especially those who undergo staged procedures in theﬁrst months of life,remain vulnerable to readmissions and complications,requiring very close monitoring and differentiated intervention ***:Descriptive and exploratory study,of the experience report type,which presents the process of building the high-risk outpatient clinic for complex congenital heart diseases(AAR)at the Instituto do Coração(InCor).Results:Report of the path taken to structure the AAR,demonstrating the organization,interface with the multidisciplinary team,admission and discharge criteria,training,and patient proﬁ*** theseﬁve years of care,275 patients were treated,59.65%with biventricular interstage physiology,followed by univentricular interstage physiology(34.55%),residual defects after surgical procedures(3.63%),tumors with risk of mechanical obstruction(1.45%)and patients with an intrauterine approach(0.72%).The signiﬁcant number of critical patients who were successfully discharged from hospital(44.72%),the low mortality rate due to sudden deaths at home and the high adherence to follow-up cor-roborate the impact of this specialized ***:Despite the limitations of the study,this experi-ence report showed that with few resources,there is the possibility of organizing an AAR with differentiated care,with the objective of early detection and treatment of residual injuries,identiﬁcation of early interventions,edu-cation of parents for follow-up of their children,resulting in individualized treatment,promoting a better quality of life for this population.

Mesenchymal stem cells(MSC)have pushed the field of stem cell-based therapies by inducing tissue regeneration,immunosuppression,and angiogenesis mainly through vesicles and soluble factors release(paracrine signaling).MSC-extracellular vesicles(MSC-EV)adaptable secretome and homing to injured sites allowed researchers to unlock a new era of cell-free based *** parallel,nanoparticles(NP)have been explored in contributing to transport and drug delivery systems,giving drugs desired physical-chemical properties to exploit cell ***,NPs can be quickly recognized by immune cells and cleared from *** this viewpoint,we explore how combining both therapeutic strategies can improve efficacy and circumvent limitations of both *** benefit from the potent MSC membrane composition,guiding chemotaxis to tumor sites,a very restricted ***-EV has low immunogenicity,high stability,long half-life and can explore tissue targeting ligands as a precise drug carry,even across biological *** properties promote enhanced targeted drug delivery that can be combined with NP,exploring biological membrane production through:*** cell therapy with NP-infused MSC;***-containing MSC-EV generated by NP-infused MSC;*** coating NP in MSC membrane(“MSC NanoGhosts”),allowing precise cargo definition without losing ***,nanotechnology combined with cell-based therapeutic resources can greatly improve targeted drug delivery,improving efficacy and opening a new venue of therapeutic possibilities.

Eosinophilic esophagitis(EoE)is a chronic immune-and antigen-mediated disease caused by infiltration of eosino-phils in esophagus tissue,which leads to morphological and functional abnormalities at this site[1].This disease was discovered in 1995 by Kelly et al.[2];since then,it has become increasingly recognized and discussed by research-ers[2,3].EoE affects children and adults and is three times more prevalent in males than in *** to a recent systematic review,there are 19.1 cases of EoE per 100,000 children/year,with a higher frequency in Western countries[4].

Enhanced Efficiency Phosphorus Fertilizer Impact on Physiological Characteristics of Coffee Seedlings

The effects of phosphorus (P) nutrition on various aspects of photosynthetic metabolism have been examined for coffee plants (Coffea arabica) grown under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design was completely randomized, and the treatments were carried out in a 2 × 5 factorial scheme: two P sources [Triple Superphosphate - TSP (46% P2O5) and Policote coated TSP - TSP + Policote (43.7% P2O5)] and five P rates (0;5;10;15 and 20 g P2O5 plot-1), with three replications. The net photosynthetic rate (A), the leaf temperature (LT), the atmospheric CO2 concentration (Ca), the stomatal conductance (gs), the transpiration rate (E), the substomatal CO2 concentration (Ci) and carboxylation efficiency (Ce) were measured in the youngest fully expanded leaf, with the use of an infrared gas analyzer. All photosynthesis measurements were affected by P fertilization. P fertilization increased net photosynthetic rate, leaf temperature, substomatal CO2 concentration, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and carboxylation efficiency. Policote coated P fertilizer resulted in a higher net photosynthetic rate, leaf temperature, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate than conventional P fertilizer. The data indicated that Policote coated P fertilizer, a kind of enhanced efficiency P fertilizer (EEPF), alters the plant’s photosynthetic carbon metabolism, explaining higher crop development and yield resulted from this EEPF.

How to model the effect of mechanical erosion control practices at a catchment scale?

Conservation agriculture practices are a crucial factor in mitigating and controlling erosion by *** address water erosion estimates,most environmental models use the USLE,RUSLE,and MUSLE *** practices that affect soil erosion by modifying the flow pattern,such as contour farming,strip farming,or terracing,are represented within these models as a support practice(P)***,due to the difficulty in accurately mapping the P-factor,many studies choose to ignore it,using only the default value P-factor 1 which represents the absence of sowing at the level or cultivation in *** study proposes a methodology that evaluates the current P-factor based on the angle between the crop row orientation and the elevation contour *** method was tested in four areas under soybean crop fields in southern Brazil,totaling 25 km^(2).The reason for choosing four areas is to select different characteristics of rural properties and topographic *** ideal values of the P-factor are expected to be between 0.5 and 0.6;however,in our case,a P-factor greater than 0.8 was obtained in 60%of the area,indicating the low occurrence of contour farming reduces erosion *** results show that policymakers could potentially use this methodology(angle between the crop rows and contour lines)to run soil-erosion risk scenarios for a broader application of contour *** allows the P-factor to be quantified via a thematic map instead of assigning uniform P-factor *** a detailed study of the P-factor on the slopes,there is a better understanding of where to target support practices to reduce erosion.

Spatial heterogeneity of factors influencing forest fires size in northern Mexico

In Mexico, forest fires are strongly influenced by environmental, topographic, and anthropogenic factors. A government-based database covering the period 2000-2011 was used to analyze the spatial heterogeneity of the factors influencing forest fire size in the state of Durango, Mexico. Ordinary least squares and geographically weighted regression models were fit to identify the main factors as well as their spatial influence on fire size. Results indicate that fire size is greatly affected by distance to roads, distance to towns, precipitation, temperature, and a population gravity index. The geographically weighted model was better than the ordinary least squares model. The improvement of the former is due to the influence of factors that were found to be non-stationary. These results suggest that geographic location determines the influence of a factor on fire size. While the models can be greatly improved with additional information, the study suggests the need to adopt fire management policies to more efficiently reduce the effect of anthropogenic factors. These policies may include more training for landowners who use fire for clearing, closure of roads, application of thinning, prescribed burning, and fire breaks in perimeters adjacent to roads.

Propranolol hydrochloride can be considered a persistent and bioaccumulative pharmaceutical in the *** drug and its by-products are potentially toxic and have adverse effects,since these compounds have been associated with endocrine-disrupting effects,reproductive deficiencies,embryo abnormalities and pericardial ***_(2)–La 0.05%–carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin(CMCD)nanoparticles were successfully prepared by a simple two-step method,which consists of sonification and *** characterization analyses reveal that lanthanum is dispersed on the semiconductor surface,probably forming Ti–O–La bonds,which can induce oxygen vacancies and surface defects that effectively restrain the recombination of photogenerated electron/holes *** efficiency of TiO_(2)–La 0.05%–CMCD samples in degradation of propranolol under UV-light irradiation is higher than that of pristine TiO_(2) within 20 min reaction,probably due to complex formation between theβ-blocker and the oligosaccharide,which allows us to propose a photocatalytic mechanism based on the formation of intermediates and competition of these compounds to the radicals and CMCD cavities.

Alternative Method to Evaluate Performance Improvement Rate in Athletics Middle Distance Events

Purpose The aims of this study were to propose an alternative method to assess an optimal performance improvement rate(PIR)that would be used as a tool for coaches and elite athletes willing to reach their personal best,mainly those seeking for national,continental or even world record(WR)in middle-distance *** further compared the improvement rate of women *** of the top-10 ranked athletes in the IAAF running these middle-distance events Method The top 10 athletes in the IAAF ranking of 800 m,1500 m,and 3000 m events for each sex were assessed for their history of race times before achieving their personal record(PR).The difference between PR(‘actual’season)and the best race time in the last season was defined as the 1st season improvement rate(1-SIR),whereas the average improvement rate in the last and preceding seasons was the multi-season improvement rate(M-SIR).1-SIR and M-SIR were calculated for each *** There were sex differences in the 1500 m with a large effect size(d=−0.746)in 1-SIR(P=0.001)and very large(d=−2.249)in M-SIR(P=0.001).Women improved more than men before the PR/WR achievements in the 800 m and 1500 m events(P=0.001)and had similar improvement rates before performing PR/WR in 3000 m events(P=0.533).Conclusion Women improve more before PR/WR achievement in 800 m and 1500 m ***,in the 3000 m men and women have similar improvement rates in previous seasons before the PR/WR achievement.

Non-phospholipid liposomes with high sterol content display a very limited permeability

We demonstrate that it is possible to form non-phospholipid fluid bilayers in aqueous milieu with a mixture of palmitic acid (PA),cholesterol (Chol),and cholesterol sulfate (Schol) in a molar proportion of 30/28/*** self-assemblies are shown to be bilayers in the liquid ordered *** are stable between pH 5 and *** this pH range,the protonation/deprotonation of PA carboxylic group is observed but this change does not appear to alter the stability of these bilayers,a behavior contrasting with that observed for binary mixtures of PA/Chol,and PA/*** multilamellar dispersions formed spontaneously from the PA/Chol/Schol mixture could be successfully extruded to form Large Unilamellar Vesicles (LUVs).These LUVs show interesting permeability properties,linked with their high sterol *** non-phospholipid liposomes can sustain a pH gradient (pH internal 8/pH external 6) 100 times longer than LUVs made of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) and cholesterol,with a molar ratio of 60/***,the non-phospholipid LUVs are shown to protect ascorbic acid from an oxidizing environment (1 mM iron(III)).Once entrapped in liposomes,ascorbic acid displays a degradation rate similar to that obtained in the absence of iron(III).These results show the possibility to form novel nanocontainers from a mixture of a monoalkylated amphiphile and sterols,with a good pH stability and showing interesting permeability properties.
