Early and efficient disease diagnosis with low-cost point-of-care devices is gaining importance for personalized medicine and public health *** this context,waveguide-(WG)-based optical biosensors on the siliconnitride(Si_(3)N_(4))platform represent a particularly promising option,offering highly sensitive detection of indicative biomarkers in multiplexed sensor arrays operated by light in the visible-wavelength ***,while passive Si_(3)N_(4)-based photonic circuits lend themselves to highly scalable mass production,the integration of low-cost light sources remains a *** this paper,we demonstrate optical biosensors that combine Si_(3)N_(4)sensor circuits with hybrid on-chip organic *** Si_(3)N_(4)-organic hybrid(SiNOH)lasers rely on a dye-doped cladding material that are deposited on top of a passive WG and that are optically pumped by an external light *** of the devices is simple:The underlying Si_(3)N_(4)WGs are structured in a single lithography step,and the organic gain medium is subsequently applied by dispensing,spin-coating,or ink-jet printing processes.A highly parallel read-out of the optical sensor signals is accomplished with a simple *** our proof-of-concept experiment,we demonstrate the viability of the approach by detecting different concentrations of fibrinogen in phosphate-buffered saline solutions with a sensor-length(L-)-related sensitivity of S/L=0.16 rad nM^(-1)mm^(-1).To our knowledge,this is the first demonstration of an integrated optical circuit driven by a co-integrated low-cost organic light *** expect that the versatility of the device concept,the simple operation principle,and the compatibility with cost-efficient mass production will make the concept a highly attractive option for applications in biophotonics and point-of-care diagnostics.

The penetration depth of atomic radicals in tubes with catalytic surface properties

Catalysis of molecular radicals is often performed in interesting experimental *** possible configuration is tubular *** radicals are introduced into the tubes on one side,and stable molecules are exhausted on the other *** penetration depth of radicals depends on numerous parameters,so it is not always feasible to calculate *** article presents systematic measurements of the penetration depth of oxygen atoms along tubes made from nickel,cobalt,and *** source of O atoms was a surfatron-type microwave *** initial density of O atoms depended on the gas flow and was 0.7×10^(21)m^(-3),2.4×10^(21)m^(-3),and 4.2×10^(21)m^(-3)at the flow rates of 50,300,and 600 sccm,and pressures of 10,35,and 60 Pa,*** gas temperature remained at room temperature throughout the *** dissociation fraction decreased exponentially along the length of the tubes in all *** penetration depths for well-oxidized nickel were 1.2,1.7,and 2.4 cm,*** cobalt,they were slightly lower at 1.0,1.3,and 1.6 cm,respectively,while for copper,they were 1.1,1.3,and 1.7 cm,*** results were explained by gas dynamics and heterogeneous surface *** data are useful in any attempt to estimate the loss of molecular fragments along tubes,which serve as catalysts for the association of various radicals to stable molecules.

The tree shrew(Tupaia belangeri)has long been proposed as a suitable alternative to non-human primates(NHPs)in biomedical and laboratory research due to its close evolutionary relationship with *** recent years,significant advances have facilitated tree shrew studies,including the determination of the tree shrew genome,genetic manipulation using spermatogonial stem cells,viral vector-mediated gene delivery,and mapping of the tree shrew brain ***,the limited availability of tree shrews globally remains a substantial challenge in the ***,determining the key questions best answered using tree shrews constitutes another *** shrew models have historically been used to study hepatitis B virus(HBV)and hepatitis C virus(HCV)infection,myopia,and psychosocial stress-induced depression,with more recent studies focusing on developing animal models for infectious and neurodegenerative *** these efforts,the impact of tree shrew models has not yet matched that of rodent or NHP models in biomedical *** review summarizes the prominent advancements in tree shrew research and reflects on the key biological questions addressed using this *** emphasize that intensive dedication and robust international collaboration are essential for achieving breakthroughs in tree shrew *** use of tree shrews as a unique resource is expected to gain considerable attention with the application of advanced techniques and the development of viable animal models,meeting the increasing demands of life science and biomedical research.

A Sub-element Adaptive Shock Capturing Approach for Discontinuous Galerkin Methods

In this paper,a new strategy for a sub-element-based shock capturing for discontinuous Galerkin(DG)approximations is *** idea is to interpret a DG element as a col-lection of data and construct a hierarchy of low-to-high-order discretizations on this set of data,including a first-order finite volume scheme up to the full-order DG *** dif-ferent DG discretizations are then blended according to sub-element troubled cell indicators,resulting in a final discretization that adaptively blends from low to high order within a single DG *** goal is to retain as much high-order accuracy as possible,even in simula-tions with very strong shocks,as,e.g.,presented in the Sedov *** framework retains the locality of the standard DG scheme and is hence well suited for a combination with adaptive mesh refinement and parallel *** numerical tests demonstrate the sub-element adaptive behavior of the new shock capturing approach and its high accuracy.

Preventing Pressure Oscillations Does Not Fix Local Linear Stability Issues of Entropy-Based Split-Form High-Order Schemes

Recently,it was discovered that the entropy-conserving/dissipative high-order split-form discontinuous Galerkin discretizations have robustness issues when trying to solve the sim-ple density wave propagation example for the compressible Euler *** issue is related to missing local linear stability,i.e.,the stability of the discretization towards per-turbations added to a stable base *** is strongly related to an anti-diffusion mech-anism,that is inherent in entropy-conserving two-point fluxes,which are a key ingredi-ent for the high-order discontinuous Galerkin *** this paper,we investigate if pressure equilibrium preservation is a remedy to these recently found local linear stability issues of entropy-conservative/dissipative high-order split-form discontinuous Galerkin methods for the compressible Euler *** equilibrium preservation describes the property of a discretization to keep pressure and velocity constant for pure density wave *** present the full theoretical derivation,analysis,and show corresponding numerical results to underline our *** addition,we characterize numerical fluxes for the Euler equations that are entropy-conservative,kinetic-energy-preserving,pressure-equilibrium-preserving,and have a density flux that does not depend on the *** source code to reproduce all numerical experiments presented in this article is available online(https://***/10.5281/zenodo.4054366).

A recent research article published in Science by Ritter et *** that endosomal sorting complexes required for transport(ESCRT)proteins mediate repair of lesions in the cell membrane caused by the pore-forming toxin perforin at sites of cytotoxic T cell engagement.1 Subsequent entry of granzymes and initiation of apoptosis of cancer cells is thus limited,leading to reduced sensitivity against T cell‑mediated cytotoxicity.1 Along these lines,this could constitute a new critical resistance mechanism for T cellbased treatment approaches.

Reinforcement learning(RL)has shown significant success in sequential decision making in fields like autonomous vehicles,robotics,marketing and gaming *** success has attracted the attention to the RL control approach for building energy systems which are becoming complicated due to the need to optimize for multiple,potentially conflicting,goals like occupant comfort,energy use and grid ***,for real world applications,RL has several drawbacks like requiring large training data and time,and unstable control behavior during the early exploration process making it infeasible for an application directly to building control *** address these issues,an imitation learning approach is utilized herein where the RL agents starts with a policy transferred from accepted rule based policies and heuristic *** approach is successful in reducing the training time,preventing the unstable early exploration behavior and improving upon an accepted rule-based policy-all of these make RL a more practical control approach for real world applications in the domain of building controls.

A Causality-guided Statistical Approach for Modeling Extreme Mei-yu Rainfall Based on Known Large-scale Modes——A Pilot Study

Extreme Mei-yu rainfall(MYR)can cause catastrophic impacts to the economic development and societal welfare in *** significant improvements have been made in climate models,they often struggle to simulate local-to-regional extreme rainfall(e.g.,MYR).Yet,large-scale climate modes(LSCMs)are relatively well represented in climate *** there exists a close relationship between MYR and various LSCMs,it might be possible to develop causality-guided statistical models for MYR prediction based on *** statistical models could then be applied to climate model simulations to improve the representation of MYR in climate *** this pilot study,it is demonstrated that skillful causality-guided statistical models for MYR can be constructed based on known *** relevancy of the selected predictors for statistical models are found to be consistent with the *** importance of temporal resolution in constructing statistical models for MYR is also shown and is in good agreement with the *** results demonstrate the reliability of the causality-guided approach in studying complex circulation systems such as the East Asian summer monsoon(EASM).Some limitations and possible improvements of the current approach are *** application of the causality-guided approach opens up a new possibility to uncover the complex interactions in the EASM in future studies.
