Antiprotozoal Activity of a <i>Thymus vulgaris</i>Methanol Extract and Its Fractions

Introduction: Thymus vulgaris is used in traditional medicine to treat gastrointestinal diseases because of its antifungal, antibacterial, and antispasmodic activity. Objective: To verify whether Thymus vulgaris also has antiprotozoal activity against Trichomonas vaginalis, Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites. Materials and methods: Conventional cultures of parasites were measured on the third day during the logarithmic growth phase. The antiprotozoal activity of the methanol extract and its fractions were evaluated comparing growth in cultures with and without extracts. Next, the extract was fractionated by polarity-based partitioning. Then, the purity of each fraction was determined by thin layer chromatography (TLC). The percentage of growth inhibition was calculated with respect to untreated controls. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of each extract was calculated by PROBIT analysis. Results: We found that a methanol extract of the aerial parts of Thymus vulgaris, at 300 μg/mL, inhibited the in vitro growth of G. lamblia and T. vaginalis, while E. histolytica growth was poorly inhibited. The methanol extract was further separated into mixtures of ursolic, oleanolic, and betulinic acids. The IC50 values of ursolic acid against G. lamblia and T. vaginalis were 8.12 μg/mL and 5.51 μg/mL, respectively. Conclusions: The methanol extract fraction containing ursolic acid obtained from Thymus vulgaris has antiprotozoal activity against G. lamblia and T. vaginalis trophozoites.

Donkey （Equus asinus） domesticated animal, is neglected as an object of scientific study. In countries where donkeys are used for work, they are slaughtered at the end of their useful working life and meat is destined for human consumption. This study was carried out to evaluate the mineral composition of donkey carcass meat. Meat was obtained in Donkey Fair 2016 at Mexico State, minerals were analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectxophotometry, Ca, Na, K, Fe, Zn and Cu, and P content by colorimetry. Data obtained in mg/100g were： Ca, 7.95; Na, 48.75; K, 353; Fe, 3,95; Zn, 3.17; Cu, 0.19 and P, 227. Analysis revealed that donkey meat has a low content of Ca, but it is good in P as well as K. In conclusion donkey meat is a good source of minerals requested for human health.

The vast majority of patients with advanced breast cancer present skeletal complications that severely compromise their quality of *** cancer cells are characterized by a strong tropism to the bone *** engraftment and colonization of bone,breast cancer cells interact with native bone cells to hinder the normal bone remodeling process and establish an osteolytic“metastatic vicious cycle”.The sympathetic nervous system has emerged in recent years as an important modulator of breast cancer progression and metastasis,potentiating and accelerating the onset of the vicious cycle and leading to extensive bone ***,sympathetic neurotransmitters and their cognate receptors have been shown to promote several hallmarks of breast cancer,such as proliferation,angiogenesis,immune escape,and invasion of the extracellular *** this review,we assembled the current knowledge concerning the complex interactions that take place in the tumor microenvironment,with a special emphasis on sympathetic modulation of breast cancer cells and stromal ***,the differential action of epinephrine and norepinephrine,through eitherα-orβ-adrenergic receptors,on breast cancer progression prompts careful consideration when designing new therapeutic *** addition,the contribution of sympathetic innervation to the formation of bone metastatic foci is *** particular,we address the remarkable ability of adrenergic signaling to condition the native bone remodeling process and modulate the bone vasculature,driving breast cancer cell engraftment in the bone ***,clinical perspectives and developments on the use ofβ-adrenergic receptor inhibitors for breast cancer management and treatment are discussed.

Non-Linear Analysis of Energy Absorption Systems under Impact Loads through FEM

This paper presents a non-linear simulation of the impact on a structure with different energy absorption systems using finite element models. Literature review on bistable structure, aluminum foam and expandable polystyrene is presented and taken as basis to propose energy absorption systems. Using a base structure, these systems are implemented by means of finite element modeling. A comparison of the damage caused to the structure in case of impact without implementing energy absorption system, and implementing energy absorption systems based on bistable structures, polystyrene foam and aluminum foam are shown here in. The results demonstrate the advantages of using energy absorption systems on structures under impact loads.

Tissue innervation is a complex process controlled by the expression profile of signaling molecules secreted by tissue-resident cells that dictate the growth and guidance of *** innervation is part of the neuronal network of the bone tissue with a defined spatiotemporal occurrence during bone ***,the current understanding of the mechanisms regulating the map of sensory innervation in the bone tissue is still ***,we demonstrated that differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells to osteoblasts leads to a marked impairment of their ability to promote axonal growth,evidenced under sensory neurons and osteoblastic-lineage cells *** mechanisms by which osteoblast lineage cells provide this nonpermissive environment for axons include paracrine-induced repulsion and loss of neurotrophic factors *** identified a drastic reduction of NGF and BDNF production and stimulation of Sema3A,Wnt4;and Shh expression culminating at late stage of OB *** noted a correlation between Shh expression profile,OB differentiation stages,and OB-mediated axonal *** of Shh activity and signaling reversed the repulsive action of osteoblasts on sensory ***,to strengthen our model,we localized the expression of Shh by osteoblasts in bone ***,our findings provide evidence that the signaling profile associated with osteoblast phenotype differentiating program can regulate the patterning of sensory innervation,and highlight osteoblast-derived Shh as an essential player in this cue-induced regulation.

Impact of Organic and Mineral Fertilization in Pecan Nut on Production,Quality and Antioxidant Capacity

The pecan nut is considered one of the most important dried fruits in the world by its classification as healthy food. The nutritional balance in the harvest is crucial for its impact on the production, quality and content of bioactive compounds. This research was carried out in the city of Aldama, Chihuahua (Mexico), where doses of mineral and organic fertilization were tested in L25 Taguchi structure with 6 factors and 5 levels by factor: nitrogen (N) 0 - 240 kg·ha-1, phosphate (P2O5) 0 - 120 kg·ha-1, potassium (K2O) 0 - 100 kg·ha-1, calcium (CaO) 0 - 400 kg·ha-1, liquid humus 0 - 3600 L·ha-1 and solid humus 0 - 8000 kg·ha-1. An average yield of 2.2 t·ha-1 was obtained;145 nuts per kilogram, 60% of the edible part of the nut. The total phenolic content was 225.9 mg gallic acid g-1 and the antioxidant capacity was 180.9 mg Trolox g-1. It is concluded that the factor with the greatest impact on yield, quality and antioxidant capacity in pecan nut was nitrogen. It was also found that the combination of mineral and organic fertilization helps to maintain the production and quality ranges of the nut. In turn, these factors contribute to the increase in the phenolic strength and antioxidant capacity. The optimal fertilization dosis to obtain the maximum levels in production of 3.2 t·ha-1;decrease the number of nuts per kilogram to 135, increase the percentage of the edible part of the nut to 61.8%, the increase in the total phenolic content to 318.6 mg of gallic acid g-1 and in the antioxidant capacity with 187.2 mg of Trolox g-1, was 184 kg·ha-1 of N, 107.4 kg·ha-1 of P2O5, 50 kg·ha-1 of K2O y 2777 L·ha-1 of liquid humus. Finally, the mineral fertilization complemented with organic fertilization is considered a good fertilization strategy for pecan trees and its possible benefits to health and the environment.
