Proximal sensor-enhanced soil mapping in complex soil-landscape areas of Brazil

Portable X-ray fluorescence(pXRF) spectrometry and magnetic susceptibility(mS) via magnetometer have been increasingly used with terrain variables for digital soil mapping. However, this methodology is still emerging in many countries with tropical soils. The objective of this study was to use proximal soil sensor data associated with terrain variables at varying spatial resolutions to predict soil classes using the Random Forest(RF) algorithm. The study was conducted on a 316-ha area featuring highly variable soil classes and complex soil-landscape relationships in minas Gerais State, Brazil. The overall accuracy and Kappa index were evaluated using soils that were classified at 118 sites, with 90 being used for modeling and 28 for validation. Digital elevation models(DEms) were created at 5-, 10-, 20-, and 30-m resolutions using contour lines from two sources. The resulting DEms were processed to generate 12 terrain variables. Total Fe, Ti, and SiO_(2) contents were obtained using pXRF, with mS determined via a magnetometer. Soil class prediction was performed using the RF algorithm. The quality of the soil maps improved when using only the five most important covariates and combining proximal sensor data with terrain variables at different spatial resolutions. The finest spatial resolution did not always provide the most accurate maps. The high soil complexity in the area prevented highly accurate predictions. The most important variables influencing the soil mapping were mS, Fe, and Ti. Proximal sensor data associated with terrain information were successfully used to map Brazilian soils at variable spatial resolutions.

The timely establishment of functional neo-vasculature is pivotal for successful tissue development and regen-eration,remaining a central challenge in tissue *** this study,we present a novel(micro)vascular-ization strategy that explores the use of specialized“vascular units”(VUs)as building blocks to initiate blood vessel formation and create perfusable,stroma-embedded 3D microvascular networks from the *** demonstrate that VUs composed of endothelial progenitor cells and organ-specific fibroblasts exhibit high angiogenic potential when embedded in fibrin *** leads to the formation of VUs-derived capillaries,which fuse with adjacent capillaries to form stable microvascular beds within a supportive,extracellular matrix-rich fibroblastic *** a custom-designed biomimetic fibrin-based vessel-on-chip(Voc),we show that VUs-derived capillaries can inosculate with endothelialized microfluidic channels in the Voc and become ***,VUs can establish capillary bridges between channels,extending the microvascular network throughout the entire *** VUs and intestinal organoids(IOs)are combined within the Voc,the VUs-derived capillaries and the intestinal fibroblasts progressively reach and envelop the *** promotes the formation of a supportive vascularized stroma around multiple IOs in a single *** findings un-derscore the remarkable potential of VUs as building blocks for engineering microvascular networks,with ver-satile applications spanning from regenerative medicine to advanced in vitro models.

Development of synthetic bone substitutes has arisen as a major research interest in the need to find an alternative to autologous bone *** an ovine model,the present pre-clinical study presents a synthetic bone graft(BonelikeVR)in combination with a cellular system as an alternative for the regeneration of non-critical *** association of biomaterials and cell-based therapies is a promising strategy for bone tissue *** stem cells(mScs)from human dental pulp have demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo to interact with diverse biomaterial systems and promote mineral deposition,aiming at the reconstruction of osseous ***,these cells can be found and isolated from many ***-critical bone defects were treated with BonelikeVR with or without mScs obtained from the human dental *** showed that BonelikeVR and mScs treated defects showed improved bone regeneration compared with the defects treated with BonelikeVR ***,it was observed that the biomaterial matrix was reabsorbed and gradually replaced by new bone during the healing *** therefore propose this combination as an efficient binomial strategy that promotes bone growth and vascularization in non-critical bone defects.

The ecological performance of metallophyte plants thriving in geochemical islands is explained by the Inclusive Niche Hypothesis

Aims The Inclusive Niche Hypothesis has not been validated for plants using ecophysiological *** few experiments have measured growth and competition but not the physiological response of plants.A metallophyte plant that hyperaccumulates aluminium(Al),Plantago almogravensis,showed a defined spa-tial distribution by occurring mostly on vegetation gaps associ-ated with metalliferous areas(geochemical islands).This case was used to determine,in situ,whether the Inclusive Niche Hypothesis was suitable to explain the extent of the species real-ized *** The vegetation associated with *** geochemical islands in the SW coast of Portugal was *** biotic(neighbouring plants)and abiotic(edaphic)components of the niche were cor-related with parameters of the plant’s ecological and physiological performances(plant density and cover;leaf c and N concentration and isotopic composition;growth).The results were obtained using image analysis,abundance and morphological measures,isotopic signatures and chemical *** Findings The species showed better physiological performance where its ecological performance was lower due to trade-offs with environ-mental *** species’realized niche was mostly limited by shrub competition and soil *** limits contribute to explain the rarity status of the species:the species has a poor capacity to compete but,due to an enhanced Al-tolerance and Al-hyperaccumulator trait,has the ability to find refuge in geochem-ical islands that are too harsh for most other *** work,based on ecophysiological field studies,provides support for the Inclusive Niche Hypothesis relating to plant species.

The extraction of the physical parameters of long period gratings from the spectral response is not an easy process. We present a demodulation technique to synthesize the physical parameters of a long period grating recorded in an optical fibre. The demodulation is achieved through the implementation of a genetic algorithm. The extracted parameters are in agreement with the typical values known for long period gratings.

Prospects for sociogenomics in avian cooperative breeding and parental care

For the last 40 years,the study of cooperative breeding(cB)in birds has proceeded primarily in the context of discovering the ecological,geographical,and behavioral drivers of *** advent of molecular tools in the early 1990s assisted in clarifying the relatedness of helpers to those helped,in some cases,confirming predictions of kin selection *** for genome-wide analysis of sequence variation,gene expression,and epigenetics promise to add new dimensions to our understanding of avian cB,primarily in the area of molecular and developmental correlates of delayed breeding and dispersal,as well as the ontogeny of achieving parental status in ***,we outline key ways in which modern-omics approaches,in particular genome sequencing,transcriptomics,and epigenetic profiling such as ATAc-seq,can be used to add a new level of ana-lysis of avian *** on recent and ongoing studies of avian social behavior and sociogenom-ics,we review how high-throughput sequencing of a focal species or clade can provide a robust foundation for downstream,context-dependent destructive and non-destructive sampling of spe-cific tissues or physiological states in the field for analysis of gene expression and epigenetics.-Omics approaches have the potential to inform not only studies of the diversification of cB over evolutionary time,but real-time analyses of behavioral interactions in the field or *** of birds represents a new branch in the network of methods used to study cB,and can help clarify ways in which the different levels of analysis of cB ultimately interact in novel and unexpected ways.

Air pollution has become a major problem in urban areas due to increasing industrialization and *** this study ambient concentrations of Pm1 and metal concentrations as well as source contributions were identified and quantified by using Positive matrix Factorization(PmF)in receptor modeling in the metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre,*** Pm1 samples were collected on PTFE filters from December 2012 to December 2014 in two sampling *** ion and trace element concentrations were *** average concentrations were 12.8 and 15.2μg/m^(3) for canoas and Sapucaia do Sul sites,*** ion contributions of Pm1 were secondary pollutants such as sulfate and *** elements,especially cu,Pb,Zn,cd,and Ni also made important contributions which are directly associated with anthropogenic *** results show significantly higher levels in winter than in *** of the Pm1 and the analyzed Pm species and elements originated from anthropogenic sources,especially road traffic,combustion processes and industrial activities,which are grouped in 7 major contributing sources.A back-trajectory analysis showed that the long-range transport of pollutants was not relevant in relation to the contribution to Pm1 and metal *** work highlights the importance of urban planning to reduce human health exposure to traffic and industrial emissions,combined with awareness-raising actions for citizens concerning the impact of indoor sources.

Soils result from the interaction of five independent formation *** one factor varies,while the others remain constant,different soils can be ***,we demonstrated an opposing trend,wherein two soils were similar,despite considerable differences in all factors of soil *** sampled two Inceptisols(Oxic Dystrudepts) formed on different parent materials(gneiss *** schist),climate(tropical altimontane ***,drier plateau),topography(1 650 m,45% slope vs.1 000 m,8% slope),time(rejuvenated ***,stable surface),and vegetation(rainforest *** savanna).The two soils had similar chemical properties,whereas the soil on mica schist had finer particle size distribution,lower porosity,and lower saturated hydraulic *** properties were related to a coarser blocky microstructure compared to the soil on *** soils presented active mineral weathering and pronounced pedoplasmation,demonstrated by clay contents>300 g kg^(-1),although only the Dystrudept on gneiss possessed coarse rock *** c horizons of both soils presented fragmented clay coatings suggestive of argilluviation,likely relict,because they were not observed in the B *** similarities in many properties of the two Dystrudepts,despite contrasting factors of soil formation,suggest converging evolution and that soil classification at the subgroup level was efficient in grouping similar formative processes in tropical ***,this work revealed that similar pedogenic processes acting on different factors of soil formation can result in similar soil properties,at least for Inceptisols where further soil development is hindered by topographic limitations.
