The effectiveness of monitoring and early-warning systems for ground deformation phenomena,such as sinkholes,depends on their ability to accurately resolve the ongoing ground displacement and detect the subtle deformation preceding catastrophic *** sinkholes with a slow subsidence rate and diffuse edges pose a significant challenge for subsidence monitoring due to the low deformation rates and limited lateral strain *** this work,we satisfactorily illustrate the practicality of the Brillouin optical time domain analysis(BOTDA)to measure the spatial-temporal patterns of the vertical displacement in such challenging slow-moving sagging *** assess the performance of the approach,we compare the strain recorded by the distributed optical fiber sensor with the vertical displacement measured by high-precision *** results show a good spatial correlation with the ability to identify the maximum subsidence *** is also a good temporal correlation with the detection of an acceleration phase in the subsidence associated with a flood event.

Migratory connectivity describes the linkage between breeding and nonbreeding sites,having major ecological implications in birds:1 season influence the success of an individual or a population in the following *** studies on migratory connectivity have used large-scale approaches,often considering regional populations,but fine-scale studies are also necessary to understand colony *** lesser kestrel falco naumanni,an insectivorous migratory raptor which form colonies during the breeding period,was considered to have strong connectivity based on regional ***,no small-scale studies on migratory connectivity have been ***,we GPS(Global Positioning System)-tracked 40 adult lesser kestrels from 15 different Spanish breeding colonies,estimating the overlap index between home ranges and the distance between their *** was found that lesser kestrels from the same breeding colony placed their nonbreeding areas at 347±281 km(mean±standard deviation)away from each other(range=23-990),and their home ranges over-lapped by 38.4±23.6%.No differences between intra-colony and inter-colony metrics were found,which suggests that lesser kestrels from the same breeding cluster do not overwinter together,but they spread out and mixed independently of the colony belonging throughout the nonbreeding range of the ***,this study highlights the importance of performing connectivity studies using fine-scale approaches.

Nitric oxide(NO)is an essential reactive oxygen species and a signal molecule in *** several studies have proposed the occurrence of oxidative NO production,only reductive routes for NO production,such as the nitrate(NO_(3)^(-))-upper-reductase pathway,have been evidenced to date in land ***,plants grown axenically with ammonium as the sole source of nitrogen exhibit contents of nitrite and NO3−,evidencing the existence of a metabolic pathway for oxidative production of *** hypothesized that oximes,such as indole-3-acetaldoxime(IAOx),a precursor to indole-3-acetic acid,are intermediate oxidation products in NO *** detected the production of NO from IAOx and other oximes catalyzed by peroxidase(POD)enzyme using both 4-amino-5-methylamino-2′,7′-difluorescein fluorescence and *** stimulated the reaction,while superoxide dismutase inhibited ***,mouse NO synthase can also use IAOx to produce NO at a lower rate than *** provided a full mechanism for POD-dependent NO production from IAOx consistent with the experimental data and supported by density functional theory *** showed that the addition of IAOx to extracts from Medicago truncatula increased the in vitro production of NO,while in vivo supplementation of IAOx and other oximes increased the number of lateral roots,as shown for NO donors,and a more than 10-fold increase in IAOx dehydratase ***,we found that in vivo supplementation of IAOx increased NO production in Arabidopsis thaliana wild-type plants,while prx33-34 mutant plants,defective in POD33-34,had reduced *** data show that the release of NO by IAOx,as well as its auxinic effect,explain the superroot ***,our study reveals that plants produce NO utilizing diverse molecules such as oximes,POD,and flavins,which are widely distributed in the plant kingdom,thus introducing a long-awaited oxidative pathway to NO production in plants.T

Wind is among the most important environmental factors shaping birds＇ migration patterns. Birds must deal with the displacement caused by crosswinds and their behavior can vary according to different factors such as flight mode, migratory season, experience, and distance to goal areas. Here we analyze the relationship between wind and migratory movements of three raptor species which migrate by soaring-gliding flight： Egyptian vulture Neophron percnopterus, booted eagle Aquila pennata, and short-toed snake eagle Circaetus gallicus. We analyzed daily migratory segments （i.e., the path joining consecutive roosting locations） using data recorded by GPS satellite telemetry. Daily movements of Egyptian vultures and booted eagles were significantly affected by tailwinds during both autumn and spring migrations. In contrast, daily movements of short-toed eagles were only significantly affected by tailwinds during autumn migration. The effect of crosswinds was signifi- cant in all cases. Interestingly, Egyptian vultures and booted eagles showed latitudinal differences in their behavior： both species compensated more frequently at the onset of autumn migration and, at the end of the season when reaching their wintering areas, the proportion of drift segments was higher. In contrast, there was a higher drift at the onset of spring migration and a higher compensation at the end. Our results highlight the effect of wind patterns on the migratory routes of soaring raptors, with different outcomes in relation to species, season, and latitude, ultimately shaping the loop migration patterns that current tracking techniques are showing to be widespread in many long distance migrants.

Among neurodegenerative diseases,amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)is the most frequent one involving motor neurons(MNs).ALS incidence varies throughout the world ranging from 0.7 to 4 cases per 100,000 habitants and year(Riancho et al.,2016).This disease,which currently lacks an effective therapy,is characterized by a variable combination of upper and lower MN degeneration,leading to progressive muscle wasting which usually results in a terminal respiratory failure within 3 years after symptom onset(Zufiria et al.,2016).A small proportion of ALS cases show familial *** are related to mutations in specific causative genes(Cr9ORf72,TARDBP,fUS,SOD1 and others)which directly determine disease onset in *** contrast,more than 90 percent of cases are considered to be sporadic,in which generally unknown environmental and internal factors interact with genetic predisposing factors finally leading to disease(Riancho et al.,2018).from a histopathological point of view,ALS is characterized by MN damage and *** from ALS sporadic and most of familial patients exhibit prominent transactive response DNA-binding protein 43(TDP-43)cytoplasmic aggregates which are considered as the“pathological hallmark”of the disease,excepting those related to SOD1 and fUS mutations(Zufiria et al.,2016).TDP-43 is a DNA/RNA binding protein encoded by the TARDBP gene that controls the expression of many different genes.

Cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6(CDK4/6)inhibitors demonstrated activity in terms of progression-free survival(PfS)in advanced dedifferentiated liposarcoma(DD-LPS),a sarcoma with CDK4 ***4 overexpression is by far more common than amplification in sarcomas and it might be a rational target for CDK *** investigators of this study found that CDK4 overexpression,while not of CDKN2A,was the most consistent predictive factor for palbociclib efficacy in *** adult-type soft-tissue sarcoma,excluding DD-LPS,or bone sarcoma patients,progressing after at least one systemic line,whose tumors overexpressed CDK4,but not CDKN2A at baseline biopsy,were accrued in this single-arm phase II trial(EudraCT number:2016-004039-19).With the main endpoint of a 6-month PfS rate,40%was considered promising in this *** was administered orally at 125 mg/day for 21 days in 28-day cycles.A total of 214 patients with 236 CDK4/CDKN2A determinations were assessed for prescreening,archival material(141),and screening,baseline biopsy(95).There were 28(29%)with favorable mRNA profiles from 95 screened patients at *** 23 enrolled patients,21 evaluable,the 6-month PfS rate was 29%(95%CI 9–48),and there were 6 patients out of 21 with a PfS longer than 6 *** median PfS and overall survival were 4.2(95%CI 3.6–4.8)and 12(95%CI 8.7–15.4)months,*** research showed a significant correlation between CDK4 mRNA and protein *** was active in a variety of sarcoma subtypes,selected by CDK4/CDKN2A,and deserves further investigation in the sarcoma context.
