We read with great interest the recent review of benign epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes (BECTS) and child-hood absence epilepsy (CAE) by Verrotti et al. (1)BECTS and CAE are the most common epilepsy syndromes in childhood and share certain clinical features: similar age at onset, overall good prognosis, and genetic predispo-sition. Several studies have reported the coexistence of the two syndromes, and recently, Verrotti et al. analyzed 19 cases reported to have clinical features of CAE and BECTS. Among the total 19 cases, three cases had fea-tures of both syndromes contemporarily;three cases expe-rienced absence seizures initially followed by BECTS;and the other 13 cases experienced BECTS at onset and had absence seizures later.

Intussusception is rarely observed in adults. Adult cases account for only 5% of all cases of intussusceptions and almost 1%-5% of bowel obstruction cases. The etiology, presentation and management of intussusception in adults are different from those in children. The clinical presentation in adults often includes nonspecific signs and symptoms, thereby complicating differential diagnosis from other causes of abdominal pain. We report a 29-year-old Asian woman who visited our emergency department with complaints of fever associated with epigastric pain since one day. Abdominal computed tomography demonstrated ileocolic intussusception, and laparoscopic small bowel luminal mass resection was performed. Histopathology report confirmed a 3.5 cm × 2.7 cm submucosal lipoma in the terminal ileum. Sufficient vigilance and appropriate investigations are important for prompt diagnosis and surgical referral of patients to enable favorable outcomes. A computed tomography scan can be a helpful modality in establishing a diagnosis.

A systematic review of active video games on rehabilitative outcomes among older patients

Background: Although current research supports the use of active video games(AVGs) in rehabilitation, the evidence has yet to be systematically reviewed or synthesized. The current project systematically reviewed literature, summarized findings, and evaluated the effectiveness of AVGs as a therapeutic tool in improving physical, psychological, and cognitive rehabilitative outcomes among older adults with chronic ***: Seven databases(Academic Search Complete, Communication & Mass Media Complete, ERIC, Psyc INFO, Pub Med, SPORTDiscus,and Medline) were searched for studies that evaluated the effectiveness of AVG-based rehabilitation among older patients. The initial search yielded 946 articles; after evaluating against inclusion criteria and removing duplicates, 19 studies of AVG-based rehabilitation ***: Most studies were quasi-experimental in design, with physical functioning the primary outcome investigated with regard to the use of AVGs in rehabilitation. Overall, 9 studies found significant improvements for all study outcomes, whereas 9 studies were mixed, with significant improvements on several study outcomes but no effects observed on other outcomes after AVG-based treatments. One study failed to find any benefits of AVG-based ***: Findings indicate AVGs have potential in rehabilitation for older patients, with several randomized clinical trials reporting positive effects on rehabilitative outcomes. However, existing evidence is insufficient to support the advantages of AVGs over standard therapy. Given the limited number of studies and concerns with study design quality, more research is warranted to make more definitive conclusions regarding the ability of AVGs to improve rehabilitative outcomes in older patients.

Formic acid was used for the nitrate reduction as a reductant in the presence of Pd：Cu/γ-alumina catalysts. The surface characteristics of the bimetallic catalyst synthesized by wet impregnation were investigated by SEM, TEM-EDS. The metals were not distributed homogeneously on the surface of catalyst, although the total contents of both metals in particles agreed well with the theoretical values. Formic acid decomposition on the catalyst surface, its influence on solution pH and nitrate removal efficacy was investigated. The best removal of nitrate （50 ppm） was obtained under the condition of 0.75 g/L catalyst with Pd：Cu ratio （4：1） and two fold excess of formic acid. Formic acid decay patterns resembled those of nitrate removal, showing a linear relationship between kf （formic acid decay） and k （nitrate removal）. Negligible amount of ammonia was detected, and no nitrite was detected, possibly due to buffering effect of bicarbonate that is in situ produced by the decomposition of formic acid, and due to the sustained release of H2 gas.

Titanium-aluminum-nitride（TiAlN） films were grown by plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition（PEALD）on 316 L stainless steel at a deposition temperature of 200 °C. A supercycle, consisting of one AlN and ten TiN subcycles, was used to prepare TiAlN films with a chemical composition of Ti（0.25）Al（0.25）N（0.50）. The addition of AlN to TiN resulted in an increased electrical resistivity of TiAlN films of 2800 μΩ cm, compared with 475 μΩ cm of TiN films, mainly due to the high electrical resistivity of AlN and the amorphous structure of TiAlN. However, potentiostatic polarization measurements showed that amorphous TiAlN films exhibited excellent corrosion resistance with a corrosion current density of 0.12 μA/cm^2, about three times higher than that of TiN films, and about 12.5 times higher than that of 316 L stainless steel.

Chronic hepatitis B infection is associated with the development of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and finally liver-related mortality. Each year, approximately, 2%-5% of patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related compensated cirrhosis develop decompensation, with additional clinical manifestations, such as ascites, jaundice, hepatic encephalopathy, and gastrointestinal bleeding. The outcome of decompensated HBV-related cirrhosis is poor, with a 5-year survival of 14%-35% compared to 84% in patients with compensated cirrhosis. Because the risk of disease progression is closely linked to a patient’s serum HBV DNA level, antiviral therapy may suppress viral replication, stabilize liver function and improve survival. This article briefly reviews the role that antiviral therapy plays in cirrhosis complications, particularly, in decompensation and acute-on-chronic liver failure.

For recent decades, a considerable amount of 99mTc has been stimulated for diagnosis radiopharmaceuticals because of its physical advantages. The increase in the use of 99mTc makes naturally more chances of internal exposure for not only patients but also medical workers. The patient internal exposure by an intravenous injection has been assessed relatively well with the reports of International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) or Medical Internal Radiation Dose(MIRD). However, there are few studies which can support its accurate assessment for medical worker who treats 99mTc. In spite of the absence of information, the physiological information of each 99mTc-labelled compound for patient, provided by ICRP, can be used optionally for worker exposure because the behaviors after uptake to blood are similar for patient and worker. Using the data, in this study, the data for bioassay were given as the intake whole-body retention and urinary excretion function. We selected the two most frequently used 99mTc-labelled compounds based on statistical data; 99mTc-phosphonate, pertechnetate. The data of the Human Alimentary Tract Model (HATM, publication 100) and the revised Human Respiratory Tract Model (revised HRTM, OIR) were used for compartment models which depict the physiological behavior in body after intake. In case of 99mTc-phosphonate, we adopted the systemic model for patient intake described in ICRP publication 53 based on the assumption that the behaviors after uptake to blood are similar for patient and worker. On the other hand, recent updated systemic model in OIR report could be directly adopted for pertechnetate. We used Birchall's algorithm for calculation and developed the module which could calculate the retention amounts in each compartment at given time by MATLAB. OBJECTIVE:To investigate the safety of hair essence containing 0.05%purified bee venom(HE-PBV)on the skin and eyes of New Zealand White ***:HE-PBV which contained 0.05%PBV,purified water,and glycerin,was used as the test *** skin-irritation test(SIT)and eye-irritation test(EIT)were conducted according to the Draize *** the SIT,HE-PBV(0.5 m L)dropped gauze was attached both intact and abraded skin for 24 *** other side of the skin was used as *** 24 and 72 h,the treatment site was observed and scored according to evaluation criteria for skin *** the EIT,the rabbits were divided into two groups:eye-washed(three rabbits)and non-eye-washed(six rabbits).HE-PBV(0.1 m L)was squirted into the right eye of *** left eye was untreated and used as a ***,20-30-s later,the eyes of rabbits in the eye-washed group were washed with^50 m L of physiologic(0.9%)salt ***,1,2,3,4 and 7 d after the start of the EIT,the eyes and behavior of the rabbits were *** degree of eye irritation elicited by HE-PBV was determined in three steps and then the criteria of the classification of eye-irritation ***:The SIT revealed erythema and edema at the site of HE-PBV *** 72 h,the body weight of rabbits was reduced slightly,but other symptoms(except erythema and edema)were not *** Primary Irritation Index score was0.6,and HE-PBV was deemed to be a slight *** EIT did not show mortality or body-weight fluctuation,but hyperemic conjunctiva and eyelid closure were noted after HE-PBV *** for these results,the score for the ophthalmic response on days 1,2,3,4 and 7 was 0,and HE-PBV was deemed to be a ***:These data suggest that HE-PBV did not elicit eye irritation,but was a slight irritant to the skin of rabbits;the latter slight would have been due to the excipients used in manufacture of the hair essence because PBV has been shown to be safe.
